  • Shirin Ghaffary weighs the potential health risks of drinking energy drinks, and compares them to other sugary, caffeinated beverages. What do you think -- should the U.S. ban energy drinks for minors?

    ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and takes a deeper look at the research behind issues that affect you. Hosted by Myles Bess and Shirin Ghaffary.
    NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEDNESDAY
    We’ve all been there-- needing to stay awake, but our body refusing to cooperate. We hear they are bad for us, but sometimes we reach for energy drinks like Redbull, Monster, and Rockstar to help us out. Or maybe we drink them just because we like the boost it gives us, or we simply like the taste. Whatever the reason, energy drinks are a billion dollar industry and their popularity keeps growing despite health concerns. We are warned they are particularly dangerous for children and teens-- and there’s even been reports of deaths linked to energy drink consumption.
    In fact, in 2011 the American Academy of Pediatrics, an organization of 60,000 pediatricians recommended kids and teens should never drink energy drinks. In 2013, the American Medical Association got involved and called for a ban in advertising energy drinks to people under 18. And some people want to take this further and actually ban the sale of energy drinks to minors. In fact, Lithuania was the first country to enact such a ban. In response to these health concerns, the American Beverage Association, the trade group that represents many of the energy drink brands, have created their own guidelines around marketing and labeling of the drinks. For example they do not market these drinks to children under 12 and they don’t sell them in K-12 schools.
    In this video we take a closer look at the science to see if energy drinks are really as bad as the hype, and what it is about them that has doctors concerned.

      I don't think that 18 is a correct age I'd say teens maybe 13 or 14. Your body's not developed until near that age and later. School aged children can find a way to obtain them anyways. The best thing to do is give it a surgeon general warning.

      Also if you put sugar into coffee you can easily make more sugary and more caffeinated drink than Red Bull at home even cheaper. If you put two or three teaspoons of coffee and then 3 teaspoons of sugar, here you have it. However, I haven't heard of people dying from that, but energy drinks have a lot of additives and those need to be investigated better, perhaps they are the cause of those incidents.

      Plain Coffee is 1000% healthier than soda and energy drinks & actually has beneficial bioactive compounds. Additionally most people seem to be more attentive about the amount of coffee they drink compared to soft drinks which most people drink all day long without a second thought
      There’s also the issue of the caffeine being far more concentrated in energy drinks per fluid ounce of liquid ingested when compared to coffee

    If anyone's interested, LD50 for Caffeine is between 150mg/kg and 200mg/kg for an average adult. Which to have a 50% chance of death, and adult weighing 90kg (200lbs) would have to drink between 120 and 147 Red Bulls at once. Which means you probably shouldn't be worried about overdosing on any normal beverage containing caffeine.

    Context, please: "too much caffeine can kill you"? Same with water (water intoxication / poisoning makes the news every few years, usually in relation to some sort of radio contest).
    The best numbers I found were from "Factors Affecting Caffeine Toxicity: A Review of the Literature". The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and the Journal of New Drugs 1967 -
    150 to 200 milligrams per kilogram of body mass. *EDIT* The Pediatrics article you cited gives about double that number - 200-400 mg/kg
    That is roughly 80 to 100 cups of coffee for an average adult - halfway to that point, water intoxication kicks in (water toxicity level is ~90mL/kg). To say it can kill you without context is unhelpful at best, Buzzfeed-esque at worst, and in this case misleading (unless you are pounding those "5-hour" energy shots, which have a much lower water content).
    I am not arguing that energy drinks and high caffeine drinks needs to be studied much more. Too, the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendations should be followed, and adults should consume energy drinks and coffee in moderation.
    I just watched your G-L-A-D episode, and this episode and this episode seems resonate with a lot of what you warn against there.
    A fair introduction to the topic of energy drinks, but a bit light on content and felt more rushed than reasoned.
    Disclaimer: I consume energy drinks regularly, along with coffee, and have been trying to find good research on their effects. I had high hopes for this episode.

I say to just put an age limit on buying them(which they do) and maybe limit how many someone can buy in one shop. It's up to the person who's drinking them though to choose how many they drink, the same as how it's up the the person to know how much alcohol they want to drink. If you can't handle high amounts of caffeine, then don't drink them. Once again, the same can be said for alcohol.

    The more I try to form an opinion on this, the more my mind goes back to the things we don't know about this issue, that you pointed out. (How do energy drinks affect people of different ages?) So now what I think, is that there should be studies done to try to fill in this lack of information.
    If energy drinks are found to be bad for a certain age group, I think it would only be mildly helpful to ban their sale to them. There are alternatives, and prohibition doesn't work, as far as I know. I think that a dedicated education campaign on the inadvisability of drinking them, would be more effective than banning them.

    It's funny how people will always have a horror story (only once did I hear one from personal experience though) to tell you about the mortal danger of energy drinks but when you ask them for the dangerous compound in them and its effects, there is never a sufficient answer. Caffeine fucks with your energy levels and so does sugar, yes, but apart from that? When I consume them too late in the day, I have trouble sleeping and I know that. Isn't guarana essentially caffeine? As you pointed out, guarana is simply the plant and the plant itself contains caffeine. So I'm always wondering why people treat guarana like a
    different thing or some chemical. Or did your research suggest that there are other ingredients in guarana that might be potentially harmful? Nice video btw!

    • @AboveTheNoise
      @AboveTheNoise  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks for the comment! You're right, the concern with guarana is mainly the caffeine. It can be confusing on labels if a label lists caffeine and guarana as ingredients because it can be difficult to tell the total amount of caffeine. Some energy drinks make it more clear by listing something like "Total amount of caffeine from all sources" so that would include caffeine from guarana as well as any other sources.

    • @xth3bangx
      @xth3bangx 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The caffein found in guarana is actually even better.
      Different than normal caffein, it has a longer effect and releases the caffein slower than normal one.
      So you don't just get the flash of awakeness, but you actually stay awake for a bit longer, without getting tired after like 30min again

    Is the problem in energy drinks really caffeine? I feel like a kid could drink like a bunch of soda and be way worse off than drinking a Red Bull. Also are there healthy forms of caffeine?

    • @violetlavender9504
      @violetlavender9504 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eunice Jung Caffeine is caffeine. There aren't different forms of caffeine, just different methods of delivery. Unsweetened tea is probably the healthiest, as it is low in caffeine and had been drunk for thousands or more years without notable side effects. But coffee is fine too. Energy drinks are probably ok. It's more about how much you take than what kind.
      Just around the energy drinks and Starbucks coffees that contain high amounts of sugar. Diabetes kills far more often than caffeine.

    The physical repercussions of having too much caffeine are very real, HOWEVA, this entire video discounts whether or not the extra ingredients (taurine, guarana, and bs like that) have any significant mental impact to the consumer. People against energy drinks generally say they feel strange drinking them. People I know who drink a hell of a lot of caffeine a day. I know in my own experience I appear to be a lot less mentally clear the following day after drinking an energy drink, whereas with coffee, there's just a minor headache. Time will tell whether or not avid energy drink users may suffer long term mental health issues but I'm gonna go on to a limb without anything but a hunch and say they do.

    REALITY: Most energy drink brands come with sugar free options (which are always much better imo... ie white monster / sugar free redbull) AND most energy drinks have about the same caffeine as coffee, sometimes slightly less, sometimes a little more.
    CONCLUSION: these are the two most commonly used arguments against energy drinks, especially when being compared to coffee for health reasons... and they are FALSE!

  • @carlopton

    Yes. Two reasons: a. It amps anxiety in folks that suffer from certain mental issues, and b. Young folks are still developing, and caffeine is addictive, so more and more will be used, and scaling back the use, or discontinuing the use, will be far more difficult for them later in life than an older person that uses the product. Personal experience: I suffered from severe asthma when I was a child. This was in the 1960's and 1970's. Back then the treatment was caffeine. So as a little boy, they tried to start me on coffee. I threw that nasty stuff up every time. So I ended up on soda pop. Lots of soda pop. I don't think it helped, but the doctors never asked my opinion. I have tried to give up caffeine a few times. But I never felt normal. So, I will drink soda pop till the day I die.

      Raquel Ramirez There is no chemicals. There are also B vitimans and niacin which is pretty much a form of B12. Most energy drinks also have the same if not less sugar than a 12 ounce coke. Most Starbucks coffee drinks also have more calories, caffeine and sugar. The point of the matter is that energy drinks are no worse for you than a Starbucks drink, coke or candy bar really. All the hype was pretty much done by stuck up parents and nursing staff seeing people that consumed way to much or already had a pre existing problem. Hope this helped :)

And there is SOOOOO much hype regarding the issue that only a kid that can't read or hear the spoken word will have the excuse of "I DIDN'T KNOW!" Let parents regulate their kids as should be done, and let we who are adults regulate our selves. NO MORE REGULATIONS... and I never drink the friggin' stuff because I am a COFFEE / TEA addict... LOL! Yes, I LOVE my KURIG and GAGGIA products. Maybe I should get some of their stock? Hmmm.

    27s - a graph with an unlabelled Y axis? Shame on you! ;-)

      Ah very observant! Good catch. The Y axis in this case would be sales in dollars with the top line being $10 billion, but it's definitely not an exact graph-- just meant to give you a visual idea. Thanks for keeping us on our toes! We also welcome ways to improve our vids.

    Am a doctor, I drink one can a day, I believe no need to regulate it, caffeine is all over the place, maybe more education to the public is needed and more transparency on the side of manufacturers, but it is not a serious public health issue

    I've never had an energy drink. I'm 48 and we had Jolt back in the 80's.
