Great video. Once, I went to San Francisco with no luggage at all. When I got to the city, I went to a casual clothes store and bought enough clothes to last me two weeks. It wasn't much, because I could wash my clothes in my room. After my stay, I gave my clothes to the homeless and returned home with nothing.
Thank you for the video. As a teenager, I went with friends to another city for a weekend training trip (Aikido) and let my mom decide what to pack... She packed clothes for 2 weeks, food for the whole time for my friends and myself and lots of other things like travel games. In the end, we used fast food stores, the training clothes and talked with the others in our free time rather than trying to dig up anything in my luggage. I didn't use or need half of the stuff. Luckily, one of the guys carried my luggage for me, so I didn't suffer too much. Today, I prefer traveling with less weight. 😂
Carry-on bag luggage is the only way to go, in my opinion. I fondly remember my month long epic cross country AMTRAK train trip that included a stop in Seattle and a one week cruise up the inside passage of Alaska. The cruise included two formal nights. I washed my underwear and shirts as needed in a basin with the free shampoo provided. I dressed very nicely for the formal nights and wore layers as needed for the excursions. The trip encompassed a temperature range of 90 degrees in the lower 48 states to a low of 30 degrees in Alaska. So I wore leggings under travel pants, tee shirt under a long sleeve shirt, with a hoodie and a rain poncho on the coldest day. It was perfect!

When I went to India for 2 weeks in 2019, I had also chosen to take only a small suitcase allowed in the cabin. It's so much more convenient and quicker at airports!
I also bring only a carry-on suitcase with me when I travel to a country for a week. Mix and match clothes and the lightest possible. Then I simply buy in the country what I might need locally. But you are so clever and practical too! knowing its going to be winter in Europe! Kudos for your exemplary achievement!
Im traveling as a family of 6 from US to Hawaii for a week. We will be packing very light as I have learned from my previous trips. Only carry on. I am so excited to pack and see if I can be a minimalist traveler.
I went to Paris for two weeks in winter with only a small over-the-shoulder bag. I packed only wool and leather pieces, in only cream and black colours. It was perfect and I didn't even have to try and drag a wheeled bag over the cobblestones. :)
I finally get to sit down and watch this! I agree; travel light. I take 1 pinafore, 1 kilted skirt, 1 pair jeans, 2 T-shirts, appropriate undergarments, 1 pair oxfords, 4 bandanas, a shawl, my field sketch kit, and a roll-up hat. These all fit nicely in a battered leather satchel, with room to add a few more pieces as souvenirs. There are toiletries at the other end. Put a good book and a small crochet project in my purse, and I'm good to go!
Wow, that’s impressive. I like that you wore your traditional clothes, I usually feel quite self-conscious about doing it and never considered taking it with me on holiday 🤦🏻♀️. I never thought about washing clothes manually and taking detergent sheets too. I assume you used the amenities in the hotels or something, hopefully you had spf.
I used to pack many things and I wouldn’t use half of them, a few months ago after binge-watching your channel I went on a trip for two weeks, I packed everything in a backpack and a large hand bag and used the laundry service and iron in the hotel. Although I over-packed a bit and my bags looked like they were about to explode 😂 It was a relief and I felt independent. Watching my family struggle with their luggage made me realize I took the right decision!
What a joy to see you uploaded a new video! As for me, no matter how light do I pack, it always turns out I pack more than what I end up using. Each and every time so far it has been a learning opportunity. I now think at every travel as a minimal journey, where part of the fun is to try and find out what I do actually need, based on last experience. Sometimes I think a big part of it is that when travelling I am happier already, and being happier I do actually need less already… what do you think?
I totally agree! After watching many travel programs, I learned: VERY experienced travelers always take a minimum amount of versatile belongings, usually in a single backpack. So, I always travel with just one small carry-on suitcase + maybe a purse and/or backpack (depending on the type of trip.) It makes everything SO much easier! 😊
Carry-on luggages are the best! We have 2 children and use only carry-on, even for longer stays. The kids can handle their own easily and it's much more convenient when taking the train or even with our car! People are always surprised we have 'so little' but we never felt we lacked anything...
Preparing for a trip from the US to Peru sometime in the next year or so. I'm watching all kinds of minimalist packing videos like this. Thanks for the inspiration!
I travel with a small case with wheels as you do. Plus a small tote. I went to Portugal for 2 yrs and did fine. then decided to go to Mexico but ditched the small case with wheels and opted for another tote. It has been a year now. Also did the same for 2years in Cambodia. Actually, it is more fun because you get to be creative when you need something or have to fix something....my favorite part....what is the saying...Necessity is the mother of invention. Would not have it any other way.
Great video. I've started to pack carry on a couple of years ago and have not looked back since. Sooo much easier. You know we could have bumped into each other in Zürich. I was there too at the same day and walked up the same Gasse you took your photo in front of. Glad you liked my country. Looking forward to your next video.
Love it!!! I'm planning to travel from Mexico to Europe during Xmas holidays and your video gave me a different perspective about setting my luggage. Definitely, less is more fun 😊
I have my one traditional cloth which I brought with me since I was 14 to all over countries and cities I visited. My tumbler and coffee sachets is a must. I like enjoy local food but my type of coffee in the morning is like my ritual. Rolling my clothes help keep a lot of space too
Hi Mr. Aki, That's a great video, I can isnpired if I wanna go to travel just need a small luggage 😇. As your fans, I would like to request that might be your consideration to make these videos recomendation : 1. Digital minimalist // e.g Handphone app / wallpaper etc 2. Your activities when off-day (Saturday/Sunday) 3. How to keep maintaining our mind / heart and soul to be calm as a minimalism 4. Story telling about your daily activities 😆 Thank you so much sir for your time to see my request, keep up spirit to make the inspiration videos, I'm sorry if my english is not good enough Note : I'm from Indonesia, if you have time please visit to my country, we have so many beautiful islands, such as : Bali, Sumatera, etc.. 😊 Regards, Heri
Well I think your travel baggage philosophy is pretty cool!!! I"ve just bought a couple of towels like yours - apart from travelling, they will hang on the line and dry more quickly. When I travelled in the East many many years ago, I just took one small backpack and that was so easy.
I know you somehow manage to read every comment that you get, and I just want to wish you nothing but happiness. Every time I watch one of your videos I feel so relaxed and hopeful! Looking forward to your travel videos!
My husband and I will be traveling to Japan for a month with only a carryon and handbag each, so this was very helpful! We leave in two weeks and we’re so excited! Thanks for the video 😊
Oh, we could have met in Germany! I am now relocating to Portugal and took the occasion to get rid of all my stuff in order to become a better minimalist. Next thing I´ll do once in Lisbon: buy these room-saving and easy to dry Tenugui towels! Keep up the good work! 🤗
Its a nice reminder to pack lite and fully enjoy travelling.. Im not into travelling tho but it will be great to meet you here in the Philippines and experience your matcha ceremony. those northern lights excites me 🥰🥰 cant wait to watch your whole travel experience 🥳 stay positive aki 💪
Okay heavy traveller here mainly because I live in different countries. But this video inspired me a lot! Thank you Aki, this reminded me to go lite when I'm back in Japan! I need to come with a lite suitcase, my clothes are still at my home stay parents' home from a visit in 2017 so I need to bring my clothes back to Australia lol! 😆
I using only carry on luggage too. I using mostly functional sport clothes, which is lightweight, easy to carry and washable. I also picking accommodations with washing machines.
Great video. My dream is to travel to Japan, I hope one day I would be able to make it true. I can't travel with only a carry on with my daughter, she needs toys to entertain her while traveling but your advices are dope and can be quite helpful. Thanks for your videos.
Hi I love your videos ! I have noticed in this last one that you visited Annecy too ! I live here ! I hope you liked it . My dream is to go to Japan , one day maybe and thanks to you I travel a little bit there through your videos.
Awesome video! I too am a fan of traveling light and always carry-on even for extended trips. Please tell us in more detail about your travel kit for the tea ceremony , extremely interesting!
I only ever carry a small carry on and personal item when I travel. I can fit about 8 days worth of clothing. If my trip were to be longer then I can always go to the laundromat. I like having my things with me because I don’t trust the airline.
Thank you for sharing!! That's what I wanted to see the video in your channel. I'm planning to visit Australia in early May and try to go with the backpack allowed in the cabin. I'm looking forward to seeing the next video!
Love your entertaining video. I have a lot of meds for a long trip and havent figured out winter summer minimal packing yet but will try in a 30 l bag plus daypack as personal item both together weigh 1 kg empty. ❤
very nice! i always overpack for any trip i have to take and i always end up having to lug around a very heavy and cumbersome suitcase! and yes, you look like you're wearing a cape over your kimono which is badass! LOL now i want one. thanks for taking us along on your trip and i hope you have a great time!
This video is really helpful!! I'm visiting japan soon and also want to travel light, at least in the beginning. I want to buy souvenirs so it will probably fill my luggage but my personal belongings will be similar to yours 🥹
I definitely liked your video! When you mentioned the overweight payments I instantly remembered the time I was returning home from youth exhange program. I had 32 kg excessive weight in my backs 😂🙈 I traveled during the night time and got so lucky, the airport staff felt sorry for me so they let me bring all my stuff home for free 😅 Never again..! 😂
i think i would of done the small hard shell luggage and a backpack instead of the large hand bag. though that is because i prefer having it on my back instead of in my hand
i love your style :) the hoodie under the kimono is a new one! I would love to see in more detail your travel matcha set. I bought a "travel" one but it was only the chasen and chashaku in a bamboo tube. they missed a trick... with a bit wider tube they could have made the lid the matcha bowl! instead i have to bring a bowl and it doesn't fit well together at all. your set looks like it fits together and is really compact. thanks!
That was a fantastic video. Practical and enjoyable and useful! Looking forward to the next one. My travelling experience has improved so much since I discovered minimalism. I would love to hear about your kimonos in detail.
Taryn Hiroshima 4 seconds ago Ah! Love this so much! Also, I have been trying to find a travel bag for my matcha-making set and yours looks perfect. Is there somewhere to buy that in the US? Arigatou~~ 🙏

Small carry-on for the win! I did the same for 2 weeks in Europe and felt bad for everyone else with all their big bags.
Imho that incredibly minimal packaging for 2 two weeks travel 😱😱😱. That save a lot of money , time and energy 👍👍👍

Hi
I love your videos !
I have noticed in this last one that you visited Annecy too ! I live here ! I hope you liked it .
My dream is to go to Japan , one day maybe and thanks to you I travel a little bit there through your videos.
I loved it, Aki : D thank you for sharing your videos always
You are exactly like me when I travel! I love your cape, it makes you look so cool and sophisticated! Happy travels!

I am currently on a 10 day trip with just a personal item (Frontier Airlines), it is so freeing, I love it!
Thank you for sharing!!
That's what I wanted to see the video in your channel.

Another great video. I found the video useful as I'm going on holiday myself in two months. Love and Blessings to you and yours!
This video is really helpful!! I'm visiting japan soon and also want to travel light, at least in the beginning. I want to buy souvenirs so it will probably fill my luggage but my personal belongings will be similar to yours 🥹
Wow!!! Thanks for this ideas. We are going to London.🤔🤔🤔. Thanks for sharing. There is no stress.
Good video. Carry on baggage is the only way to go.
Great video! I wanna try this, too! 😄
I travel similar to this but with a 40l backpack
Loved the mini kanji lesson, more of this bits in your awesome story videos please 🙏🏽
Great video, THANKS!
i think i would of done the small hard shell luggage and a backpack instead of the large hand bag. though that is because i prefer having it on my back instead of in my hand

ごめんあさい、my Japanese is not very good.
Great idea 👌👌
Greatttttttt. Thank you so much and congrats on your done dream, amazing!
Love having the minimalist life. Think I donated about 30 items this week…people think I’m nuts here in 🇦🇺…being a minimalist lol
Very useful! I never travel light! Change time! I will tried to down size to 7.9 kg.
❤💫. Your cape and kimonos are wonderful.
i dont know about bringing that bulky matcha set, but well packed. It may sound sacrilegious, but if you just take only some matcha with you you could shake it in any water bottle as needed.
Hello from CA & arigato gozaimasu 4 video on packing. What is name of suitcase & bag?
Thank you for another useful and joyful video🙏🙏
Could you tell more about travelling with matcha and how you pack it?
I always only travel with a carry on bag and light backpack as my hand bag. Only time I needed a big suitcase was when I moved to another country temporarily.
Once on a trip, another person in our party packed everything in one giant bag. When we got to our destination her bag was lost! She had to buy clothes and toiletries for the rest of the trip - her bag was finally recovered on the last day! It was really a terrible experience for her.
Another surprising video. Many thanks. So, did you do the entire trip with just the one pair of half-boots? Carrying the right multiple pairs of footwear is always a challange for me.
Your video is so cute and funny 😁 thank you
I always travel light where ever I go. So much so, that my travel buddies always try to take advantage by making me carry their stuff too 😅😓
i loved the outfit! i didn't register it as hp lol just a really nice silhouette variation on your usual kimono outfit :)
thanks
It s so funny .. i live in 🇨🇭 and dream of going back to japan .. also always just with a carry-on 😉
Konnichiwa! Can you make a video about your everyday carry?
I went to Germany for two weeks with only one small 25 litres backpack, however my laptop was in it and that was 2kg!! Next time i will take a suitcase because that was too heavy for my back.
Great video. What are you going to do with the hangers? I have never seen a hotel/ hostel without hangers. What shoes did you pack/wear?
What size snow peak cup do you use for your travel matcha set?
Great video!!! I always overpack and actually had to buy an extra suitcase when in Italy last. This next trip, I will try to just take a carry on!! Can you recommend a good site on Amazon to buy a traditional cotton kimono? Have always loved them! Thank you 💜from California
Great video. Hugs
A rucksack/Backpack causes me back pain over time. A small suitcase with wheels is more comfortable.
What if you buy souvenirs for freinds will that effect your luggage or will you buy small items
1 month with only a back pack that would be the real minimalist packing video
8:58 Greetings from Corona
Thx for the nice video, I also use packing cubes when travelling 😊. But did you need the aluminum hangers really here in Europe? XOXO from Germany
I would love to hear about your kimonos in detail.

Ah! Love this so much! Also, I have been trying to find a travel bag for my matcha-making set and yours looks perfect. Is there somewhere to buy that in the US? Arigatou~~ 🙏
Very smart!😊
Where you going to put those gifts you bought over sea?
Where did you buy the travel matcha set?
I thought you were going say "Have you ever tried to put your kimono sleeves through backpack straps? Well, that's why you bring a suitcase."
I love UNIQLO toooo!!!
