I had the honor of hearing Sandra speak at my Protestant church in Provo in the ‘70’s. I was BLOWN AWAY by everything she revealed to us. It changed my life and kept me from joining Mormonism. My pastor cried tears of relief as he spoke with her afterward because he felt validated regarding all the hardship he faced in Utah County.

With all my grandmas deceased, if there was ever an old lady I want to hug and tell how much I love and respect, it's Sandra Tanner. Everything she has done, been through and endured on all sides, from Mormons and ex/non Mormons is inspiring.
Jerold and Sandra didn't have wealth and they often weren't supported when it came to others taking the Tanner's research and claiming it.
Sandra is extremely sharp for her age and any age. She's not bitter about anything. She is captivating to listen to and she's just so sweet. It's funny because 'sweet' is so often hard for me to stomach because so many people are phony. Sandra is genuine on top of being a strong intelligent woman.
Sandra has stories to tell, research to share and so much 'Ole Skool' wisdom. What a gem!

Sandra, thank you for your and Jerald’s ministry. I visited you in 2019 on my move from Austin to Boise and asked you what you would recommend when we got visited by Mormon missionaries. I bought 2 copies of that booklet “41 Distinct Teachings of the LDS Church” along with many other free pamphlets you suggested. It was only this year that we got to speak with 3 young missionary ladies who stopped to talk while I was putting our Christmas tree in the stand. They were very nice and clearly sincere but suggested that I would find no contradictions between the Book of Mormon and the Bible. I affirmed them for their putting their faith into action but recommended that if they were approaching Christians, they might want to confirm their assertion about similarities to Christianity. I gave them a copy of your booklet and to aid them in their research. I also asked them that if they ever came to doubt the claims of Mormonism, that they would not automatically toss out the Bible with the Book of Mormon, but instead would test both by the same strict standard called for in Scripture. I’m praying God will encourage them to engage with your insights and open their eyes to clearly see the differences and then test both as a basis for what they believe.

About twenty years ago while researching at The University of Utah Marriott Library Special Collections I met both Stan Larson and D. Michael Quinn. While I checked out the papers of Fawn Brody and David O McKay, Stan Larson told me that McKay did not trust BYU and his Brethren to properly curate his private papers so he made sure that The U of U retained such. My impression from Stan Larson was that he agreed with McKay’s point of view. I still retain Stan Larson’s business card he gave me. Glad to hear he is still with us as he turns 77 in February.

I met Curt Bench through Walt and used to go up to his bookstore when it was on Rio Grande. I found him to be a wonderful bloke. I talked to him briefly about his experiences at Rare Books at Deseret and talked to him a lot about books on Mormon history, some of which I, a Gentile, bought at Benchmark. I never asked him about Hoffman. The only 1830 BofM I ever saw was one Lynn, who worked at Seagull, brought down to show Walt.

I wonder what I would have thought, had I known all of this stuff at the time it was going on in the 70’s. It was during the time I worked in the church offices and was making a lot of the same conclusions but by watching the back door hypocrisy of the inner workings of authorities in how they treated the working people in the church headquarters. My faith was eroding by the manipulation going on in the name of Devine inspiration of priesthood leaders to their members. I suspect I would have left the church even faster than I did - but the guilt and anxiety I had over it would have dissipated faster.

Tons of respect for the Tanner's today. I just find it interesting that they had the cojones to face the faith of their ancestors. They practically stood alone against one of the most powerful Religious organisations in the world. Stood their ground and exposed the Genie behind the curtain, and yet....instead of applying the same courage to Christianity itself, they jumped into the fire. To each their own I suppose, but I would love to have seen that same drive, and dedication applied to the whole of Christianity too. To me it seems like jumping from the LDS faith right into fundamental Christianity is akin to jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Great interview! She doesn't look like a "scholar", but what does a scholar look like?

Agree. Mormonism isn’t any crazier than the stories in the bible: people turning into salt pillars, polygamy, people rising from the dead, water turned into wine.

I didn’t need Sandra Tanner to tell me that Mormonism isn’t the true gospel. I figured it out in 1972 all on my own (Holy Spirit?). My decision to disassociate with the church has been reinforced by the information she has shared in this podcast and previous others.

If there be any Mormons in the comments, we want you to understand that when we approach the problems and the doctrine put forth by your prophet and early founder, It is because we see in how it's worded that there is a problem between the scriptures and what it gives us in the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of great price, articles of faith, and the doctrine and covenants. there are times, and I'm including myself in this statement, that we don't approach you people with civility or understanding. there isn't an excuse that I could give for this except to say that what represent cannot be a sweeping reading comprehension problem on our part. I approached a Mormon today about what it says about Jesus's birth and that he was conceived and Jerusalem. when I showed them in the Bible that he was born in the city of David, they begin adding stuff to the argument to say that the syntax in how an area would be appropriated to a general discussion of geographical locations, that the early Jews if you said Jordan or Bethlehem, you generally mean Jerusalem. That's not true. this is why it's not merely Bethlehem being named in the discussion in the Bible, but it's specifically called the city of David. Jerusalem is not the city of David, no matter how bad you want it to be or what you do to generalize how it is presented in the Book of Mormon.
That's one of over hundreds of examples that are at the nucleus between the differences of the Bible and the differences in the Book of Mormon.
there was a bunch of Mormons earlier praising the fact that they discovered that horses existed long before Columbus or the conquistadors in Northern America. The flower rewards that these people were using like they were giving their own mini sermon. But this is what's I'm going to refer to as the Alex Haley effect; Alex Haley wrote a book that was declared a true documentation of black slaves and post colonial America. It mentions white slavers, the ships that brought over the slave, different states and cities, how they were treated, and all of that on the surface is true, but it doesn't make the Book of Mormon true. You can mention all the biblical people, places, things, But Dr Seuss mentions ham and eggs, but it doesn't make the story of Green eggs and Ham any more true.
You can't examine your doctor and haphazardly by praying on it. The book of Timothy says to test all things and to hold fast to what is true. That may have been the book of Thessalonians; I always get those two mixed up.
You don't test things by praying on it... The Bible says to you some discernment and beware of unclean spirits. If you're bending your ear all the time to unclean spirits that you know we're going to validate your bullshit, then you're probably and not very likely going to listen to anything else.
here's a real life situation that perfectly represents what Mormons do when it comes to adhering or listening to their doctrine and what critics have to say. this Mormon woman who I've known since I was 17 years old made a egg or potato salad, I can't remember which because it was so long ago. she took that potato salad to a lady's function that the church where she lives was holding. when she brought it back it was only half gone. since I live downstairs and share the kitchen with them, I made myself a played and took my first bite. It was extremely salty. Now when I told her this, the first thing that flies out of her mouth is; well no one else complained about it and they never told me. this is because her like all other Mormons are conditioned to be nice to each other and they think by withholding the truth such as, "your potato salad is too salty" helps the person that made it by being nice about it. this also tells me that Mormons like the function to take healthy criticism, so you're left with this static that everybody walks around in, but no one mentions. would it have hurt her feelings has she been told that her potato salad was a little bit on the salty side? yeah, but would she make it too salty again? definitely not. Knowing her though she probably would be apprehensive of bringing anything knowing that she would be the subject of criticism, which is why she should have listened to her family first. oh wait, that's right... they're just like her! they're not going to tell her anything either so she's never going to know that anything is wrong with her potato salad, so she will continue making it the same way over and over and over again. pretty soon she will bring home leftover potato salad that would not have been touched, And she will wonder why... because no one says anything to her.
Mormons live in this bubble where they have mentally shielded themselves from reality and all these niceties and idioms, that are reinforced by this presumed impenetrable echo chamber where they firmly believe from the bottom up, that the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints is the only true church on the earth, that Joseph Smith was a genuine prophet, that their God was born on a different planet in a different galaxy and exalted by his God, and that Christ was spiritually born between Elohim and his unnamed goddess... And anything that stands against that is deemed an attack from the enemy. Now I doubt this lady would have seen the criticism of her potato salad as an attack, but she would have been butt hurt. why? because she's never in her life had anyone just come up to her face and tell her the truth. I do it all the time and she doesn't like it. she either ignores it, which is pretty much half of the time, or she gets mad.
Of course I pick my battles too because I was going to mention the quote by Joseph Smith declaring that and not so little of words that the LDS church is in fact not Christian.
He said, "nothing less than the complete apostasy of the Christian religion would warrant the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints."
If they knew their history and respected their prophet as they say they do, then these words being a messenger of God and that anything they say shall become scripture, then they should know by Joseph Smith's own description that the LDS church is not Christian.
