    Palladium games were all we played. I'm glad as well. After I found out how D&D plays I still prefer Palladium Fantasy 1st edition. It makes a lot more sense using opposed 1D20 rolls. Sword Strike vs Parry. Shoot an arrow vs dodge.

    It was nice to watch this vid that I stumbled upon today I have very fond memories of Palladium FRP game, but mostly have played the 1e version. It still influences the way I think about FRP games and I will occasionally use something that I borrow from Palladium in more recent systems. There is a lot of creative content in all the Palladium books.

      I am keeping my eye out for any 1st edition stuff. I've never played it, but I have a ton of all the 2nd edition "megaversal" books. I may do a deep dive into the lore someday as well, as it is interesting if not very well explained in this book.

    My RPG groups played this from the late 80s up until about 2016.
    Thus game got so much right. You won't find a better system for wizards out there. But it was a brutal game. You character was almost never at full health. Good memories. If only they had their own version of DnDBeyond

    As far as them not planning major releases, it's worth noting that Kevin brought on Sean Owen Robertson, who did the Savage World's crossover line with Rifts, as his protege and creative partner. I heard on a podcast the ultimate goal is to eventually hand him the keys to the kingdom. But as for short term, they want to finish up currently planned and in production books and then focus on a system-wide long overdue update. I guess we could vaguely refer to it as Palladium 3e, since we've mostly just been getting errata for 1 and 2e printings of major product lines for quite some time.

    There are a lot of supplements that expand on the world and lore, there also build out on different martial O.C.C.s as well. As for the drawing showing some of the characters with sci fi weapons, that was the author's home campaign player characters. He used to run for a very large group of people.

    Each area of the PFRPG world had it's own source book with a lot of details for the history, culture, and native peoples. Some areas were done better than others, in terms of playable details, but all of them added color to the gaming experience. There was/is a large errata file to handle the multiple errors, missing information, and contradictions in the books. There is also a summary list of the questions players submitted that were answered by the authors.

    Palladium was my introduction to TTRPG's way back in the late 80's, one of my mothers friends had the original black and red cover book which they got for tattoo inspiration only. I laid claim to the book and that started my enjoyment of Palladium
    I ran a couple of long term campaigns with it unfortunately I'm finding it difficult to find people to play it as they prefer the "What superpower do I have" games that D&D has become

    Palladium Books was the first system I played, and one I GMed for several years. Mostly Heroes Unlimited, but with lots of crossovers with Fantasy and TMNT as well. Awesome worlds, great art (particularly in RIFTS), and overall a fun system. This is the system I've compared every other game against since then.
    Combat is oft a SLOG though, with even simple fights taking HOURS with all the parrying, dodging and attack rolls, but it's very realistic. The attribute rolling can, and does, create some extremely powerful and extremely useless characters ... but again, it adds a layer of realism not found in many systems.

    I've played with a fair number of RPG groups, but only one played Palladium with any frequency. Character creation was a nuisance, and the system could get a bit clunky, but all told I liked the system. (And where else could you start out with a character with Hysterical Blindness, and manage to get them up to 4th level before they finally expired on top of a burning building?)

    Why do you feel 2E is superior to 1E? Is it solely for its more seamless meshing with the other Palladium books? Most of the reviews from actual Palladium Fantasy players have 1E as the better and more playable version.

    • @StrayCatMatt
      @StrayCatMatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't necessarily mean it was "superior" per say. What I meant to say is that they greatly added onto the structure and rules system. In my script I wrote "a major improvement" but I suppose what I meant was "a major renovation".

    Palladium is an awesome game system that outshines 5th Edition D&D. However, their vagueness and usually horrible supplements took a toll on the game. The exception is The Island at the Edge of the World and the Northern Wilderness ones. There Monsters and Animals is good. Though you don't need it for the second Edition if you buy the Rifts Conversion book. Most of PB's supplements suck because you almost never get real maps. Just a bunch of rectangles, lines, squares, triangles, squiggles for plant life or river or lakes. TSR outshines PB's in supplement content and artwork. Some of Palladium books products are just pure laziness in art or explanations. Like the Dragon on the cover is from artwork from time life books the Enchanted World series. They just covered it in horns to hide that fact. You can see it in the Enchanted World book series commercials on TH-cam. They have Vincent Price in them. Palladium Books became a victim of their own success with RIFTS. I hated RIFTS personally.

    Honestly, this system reminds me of Dwarf Fortress adventure mode. The excruciating, perhaps excessive detail, and consequently constrained nature of it gives the impression of a compuiter program, where what isn't explicitly implemented isn't possible.

    I love that by "not condoning the occult" Palladium were lumping those idiotic christians into the same baskets with the so-called satanists they despised. I'm sure that was lost on the self-righteous though.
