    I feel like this is the best representation of OV's strengths and weaknesses.
    It has some of the biggest events, lore implications, and most creative uses of aliens, and pairs them up with jokes that don't land or have bad timing, and a lack of seriousness that screws them over.

      Whenever Ben defeats some big bad, they went to mr smoothie. When Ben got famous, he did marketing with mr smoothie. When the universe was recreated, mr smoothie was the one reminder of that feat. Heck even after this when he saved all of reality, the next thing we see is him going to mr smoothie.
      What Ben values most isn’t the smoothies, it’s BEING A HERO, and since there’s no face to put on the concept of heroics, the contumelia take the form of an icon Ben associated with that. Every big event, every long battle, every time Ben has had a solid victory, he associates that with a trip to mr smoothie."

    While i fully agree with kuro’s opinions on the episode as a whole. As someone who went through a significant and rather unique traumatic event (while nothing universe ending related) I wholeheartedly believe ben’s reaction to the events that happened. While i am adding more than what the show gives, you don’t want to think about it, you don’t want to process it and the thought of it actually happening can crush you to your core, so i genuinely believe ben, who has put on a confident strong time and time again and said to have done that wouldn’t really be sitting with the idea that everyone he knew was dead when they (the new versions) are right in front of him. As for ben’s reaction in universe v tennyson, to an extent i maintain what i stated but also believe there could be censor reasons and tone too

    • @TheInkTank
      @TheInkTank  ปีที่แล้ว +375

      See I could believe that completely if the show alluded to that, even just a little bit. But like I said in the video, you have to apply logic that isn't there to make it make sense. So strictly going off of the show, it's out of character and bad writing.

    • @isthereabatinthehouse2242
      @isthereabatinthehouse2242 ปีที่แล้ว +148

      @@TheInkTank Oh yeah I completely understand that and agree, as much as i love omniverse i feel that there are multiple times (the big ones to me being this, albedo’s insanity and the whole contumelia smoothie thing) the show could really deepen itself by at least alluding to there being more substance to the choices the show makes with its characters, yet the lack of that allusion limits the show to where those possible deeper elements only exists with the interpretations of the fans to where they can appreciate an episode because of how they see it, while those elements aren’t present in the episode to some degree.

      @@isthereabatinthehouse2242I say Albedo's (not insanity) but more evil attitude is ok. He wasn't going for a redemption. His first in UAF appearance was him torturing people for information and the last one was him trying to put a that thing, which imma call a Headcrab (because references are fun) which would have been excruciatingly painful for Ben and basically game over if medicine wasn't so advanced throughout the universe. And Albedo does acknowledge how he feels about Ben defeating and imprisoning him time and time again.
      And he does not deserve to be a galvan again. Him getting stuck as a genetic dublicate of Ben was his own doing. And he's also racist towards humans, so I'd say deserves to be stuck as one. He just became more evil than before.

    I like the Omniverse Alien X design, but I get the feeling that it's a staple of Derrick J. Wyatt, as he also worked on Transformers Animated and characters like Optimus or Sentinel also had massive chins. I guess this was his way of depicting someone that's heroic, masculine, and powerful, which explains why Alien X looks the way he does.

      I figured that as well, but that's kinda the issue for me: Ben's aliens should *not* look heroic and masculine, they should look like bizarre otherworldly monsters. It's part of what made the classic designs work for me at least.

    It is kind of surreal to acknowledge that the show took a scene that features the simultaneous final screams of everyone in the universe and underplayed the sheer scale and severity of that scenario. I do not think I could have worked on the show and been happy with passing over such a haunting scene/idea so quickly.
    The recreation of the universe was near-masterfully presented, but the destruction of it was kind of underwhelming - again, because they came up with such an amazing idea and kind of just pushed it under the rug. Most people find the dying screams of a handful of people to be traumatic. Ben was hearing the dying screams of EVERY person in the universe, and the show does not show us that he cares at all (so far).
    Awesome video as always, Kuro. The detail of those screams just made me feel compelled to share some thoughts.

    Omniverse was the series that FINALLY gave us a sense of just how powerful the cosmic side of the Ben 10 Universe truly is.
    Classic was relatively small in scale.
    UAF spent many episodes hyping up the godly abilities of the Celestial Sapiens as well as the Naljians and Diagon, but they either did nothing during the little screentime they got or were so underwhelming that they completely failed to stick the landing (*cough Diagon).
    But then OV came around and was like “yeah, there’s an entire race of higher dimensional beings that destroy and create universes for their own leisure, but Alien X doesn’t give a shit about that. Watch”… in the span of 4 episodes. And that’s all it takes to disprove the notion of empty hype.

    I like to think that the reason why Ben sees the Contumelia as giant smoothies during the final arc with Maltruant is because deep down the events of this episode actually affected him. I think this because the only thing that Ben couldn't recreate accurately as it was were the smoothies (which he claimed tasted different). So he needed to convince himself that he saved everyone. And thus, despite his state of negation, deep down he knows that he is the only survivor. With the smoothies being a constant reminder of that time he actually failed and that's why he sees giant smoothies when he sees the Contumelia.
    I also think this episode could work as an explanation for Gwen's redesign. Because is likely for Ben to unconsciously see Gwen in her mind being more of a stereotypical nerd than what she actually was. Which is why she gets freckles and glasses as a result after the recreation of the universe that happened in this episode. Because that's the perception that Ben unconsciously had of her when he recreated the universe. The same goes with Rook and contraptions, he probably also perceived Rook as more formal than he actually was and that's why he starts using contraptions right after he remade the universe.
    And when it comes to the whole "edgy" debate. I personally think that something is edgy when the actions or mentality of a character are needlessly dark. In the case of Ben, that would be anything too extreme that go againts the way he would normally behaves (or any ither character for that matter). To put an example about the difference:
    Prisoner 775 wanting to kill Colonel Rozum for unfairly put him in prison and then wanting to die at the end for not having anything left in life. That's not edgy, that's dark.
    Ben stating that he needs to kill Kevin, his best friend, in less than a month/week because "he is dangerous to all the people he cares about and yet not stating at all that he needs to kill villains that were also a threat to his friends and even to literal planets despite fighting them for years, is (in my personal opinion) edgy. Because it has major implications for his character that put him doing actions that he never stated necessary to deal with bigger villains than Kevin in the past.
    I don't think this episode is silly. Or at least not that silly. Mainly because realistically, Ben being in some kind of denial at the end of this episode would be in line with the magnitude of what he just experienced. But then again, its Omniverse, which as a show is more lighthearted. So maybe they just really wanted a convoluted way to give him a new hoodie XD.
    But if the whole thing with the Contumelia as giant smoothies is indeed meant to be Ben being unconsciously aware of the fact that he is the only survivor of that event, I think this would make sense with the idea of Ben being in denial in this episode and even in the episode where he goes to trial.

    I quickly accepted Alien X's chin for two reasons:
    First, how later through the series, Alien X is given more spotlight than in UAF, so the chin is a small change that didn't need to be blown out of proportion.

    My take on the Annihilarrgh, and Ben's reaction to it throughout the episode: The jokes in this episode kind of feel like they're from Ben's perspective. Until it's too late, Ben believed that the bomb just could have been just a fairy tale and everyone was just overreacting. After the recreation of the Universe, those perspectives flip. Now Ben is the only one that believes in the Annihilarrgh is real, while everyone else feels dumb for reacting that way to a dud.
    Ben's reaction to "duplicating" the Universe is a complicated topic in of itself. He created a dupe Universe where everyone he knows and loves have the exact same memories as before the recreation. Although he acknowledges they aren't the "originals", how are they any different than before? In Ben's perspective, he still found a way to save the Universe. It gets complicated depending on one's definition of "I made an exact clone/dupe of everything" vs like reviving someone. It happened, but also it's how someone moves on from that.

    In terms of the humourous vs seriousness debate of this episode... unpopular opinion I absolutely love it.
    As animation/TV/film lovers we start to notice styling tropes, for example if characters/writers find nothing about any situation humorous then we as the audience make the connection "ah ok this is or at least trying to be a story with high dramatic stakes" and if the tone is so light it floats like a balloon we make the connection of "ok we're just supposed to laugh and have a good time"
    What does any of this actually have to do with anything: well this episode goes very much for a jokey, happy "we're having a comedic romp through space tone, so much so even when... the doomsday device I can't spell gets activated you think "ok it's going to be a countdown that stops at 1 second classic James Bond stuff" and you continue thinking that when Alien X shows up because his billed as Ben's most powerful alien... untill argit taps him and you remember that hot take: with the exception of his first appearance Alien X was _absolutely useless_ up to this point due to the debating that had to happen to do anything whereupon right before it activates and starts taking apart the Universe you realise the light tone was all a hoax

I think this episode hinges on the audience expecting a fake out where the Annihilarrg just turns out to be a dud (hence why they’re using gimmicky side characters). But then it is a quick 180 to show yes this is a threat, and take us by surprise. Like when a show has everything “going so well” and people are having fun through out their day and then randomly kill a main character. If you view it like that where this episode plays into every bit of the tropes only to follow through with the initial threat I think it works.

    That's the thing, they don't. Bellicus and Serena are being shown in their true Multiverse nature, they are above this, Universe being wiped away, big whoop, that's just another Tuesday

    I like both Alien X designs, His UAF one is alright a dude made out of space that can warp reality but the OV one isn't bad, I like the built proportions and the chin, it spawned some good memes lol
    As for the scene yeah I wish they showed more of Ben's reaction, heck if Bellicus and Serena can show Ben what's happening they could have emphasized the moment by showing things like Kevin's car and Max's Plumbing getting wiped not necessarily showing who is getting wiped but to emphasize to Ben and the audience that they're gone and you could still have Bellicus mocking him because why would they care, the annhilarg is childsplay to them they're above all of this, they really could have sold how crazy it would be a lot more, I like the think Ben being nonchalant is him trying to cope with everything which could have been a neat thing for his character

    It is funny that the Alien X remakes the universe segment was always just that. A segment. Nobody talks about the actual episode, which is more than appropriate for the quality of it all beyond action.

    This episode feels like it should have been the first episode at least to me. Like I even remember being introduced to Omniverse with this episode and distinctly having the notion that the art style changes and character changes happened because Ben recreated the universe differently than the previous one and that no one commented on the changes cause to them they werent as apparent from their perspective. Interesting enough they would canonize the art style changes later down the line with the celestialsapient court episode.

    It's insane how this episode could've LITERALLY been fixed by ONE rewrite. Say that Alien X just rewinded time, that's it, don't say "he remade universe" day "he went back in time, wo it's still OG universe" as for Smoothie changing face, you could just say "that's the consequences of trying to change time, aka butterfly effect and stuff" they can even make a joke about it Ben: "WHY IS SMOOTHIE DIFFERENT FLAVOUR?!? I JUST TURNED ANIHILARG INTO A DUD! 😢"

  • @codenate02
    @codenate02 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    I really don't think this episode feels like it was meant to be more than a "filler"-ish adventure. It feels to me like they wrote this as a one-off, MAYBE planning to use it as an excuse for retcons. Then later either after the fans pointed out how huge this was or just when they were looking for ideas for later content, they brought back the ideas for the finale.

    Kuro, there is no such thing as the "previous universe" or a "new universe", and the characters are still the "authentic versions" of who they were prior.
    They have to be, just from a logistical perspective. How would Ben have known about any of the new Omniverse antagonists or the Time War or Rad Dudesman or anything about the Anur System? It would have to have been that Alien X or Bellicus or Serena or some other Celestialsapien factor was actually responsible for restoring everything, and if so, we can only presume that all those things Ben could never have known about were brought back completely identically, as they were never implied to have been different in any way prior to the Annihilarrgh going off.
    And considering that everyone else in the episode looks identical afterward and that the only implied differences caused by the universe reset was Ben getting a new outfit and Mr. Smoothy's change in branding and grape flavoring, it just makes sense that the universe being "destroyed" wasn't treated as a tragedy, because it wasn't destroyed, so it wasn't a tragedy. The universe destruction was just a way for the Omniverse writers to communicate to previous fans that things would change in Omniverse and not everything would stay the same way that it was in Classic and UAF. That's all there is to it.

  • @El_Omar2203
    @El_Omar2203 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I feel like I'm one of the few that doesn't see Ben recreating the universe as such a "tragic" event as most people do. Like, it happened and in terms of everything, it is the exact same universe. Is like if you copied a word document and deleted the original file but the copy had *one* miniscule typo. And I watched this episode back around the time it aired.
    If it was something like, the recreated universe but clearly imperfect, then I would feel that it'd be tragic.

    I love 5yl Ben Argent transformation name gave him
    18:53 That an good ben reaction Image
    That bizzare why would ben not like goop or stinkfly. Stinkfly was his go to flyer in Og before jetray - rip - and Big chill came along. And Goop is just very cool
    Err, Alien X design is fine. The og is better because with the most insane powerfeat coming up, his original design fit more so that you just can't believe that he did just do that over the muscular look
    This episode really should of been far more serious if all the original cast beside Ben & Serena/Belicus, heck, they could of had an whole special to restore it back and more, anything cause it so dark

    plus i think this episode hurts the finale, as the first episode comes back and gives the finale some impact, gwen's line of wanting to see what she's been saving, and ben's motivation in the finale is to see the universe he saw be born and see what he's been saving, except this episode shows that, that universe he saw be born was destroyed by the annihilarg this episode and the universe he goes off to see is the one he managed to recreate. It's a small thing but it feels weird

  • @DogBorgMan9

    I think that the reason that ben takes re-creating the universe so lightly, is because of the scale of it, it is trillions or quadrillions of lives and it is just not possible for ben to comprehend that, similar to how we know what $1000 is but we cannot comprehend the hundreds of billions of dollars that the richest people in the world have. It's easier to grieve something when it's more specific and centralised

    When you really think about it, this plot thread is just disturbing. Imagine being in Ben’s place:
    You were cornered into no option except for resetting the universe to save it. However…everyone you knew and loved is technically dead. All there is are their alternate selves, and they’re not 100% themselves. Maybe that’s why Ben is so bothered why he couldn’t get the grape smoothie right. It’s a reminder of how much he has to sacrifice in re creating the universe.

    24:34 to be fair to the ‘correcting Ben’ joke, I think it was done differently each time. More characters correct him, all at once at the same time. The characters are in a stand off with each other, double crossing and treachery and all that, but they all stop what they’re doing to correct Ben. I feel like the joke is that they prioritise correcting Ben over what they were doing or who they were fighting, not that Ben us dumb
