The LTT Backpack: an extreme conditions 9 month review

  • This is a long term review of the LTT backpack, it spans inclement weather, multiple months and several states and now I finally feel confident enough to review it in its entirety.
    The LTT Backpack is a pack made by Linus Tech Tips, a TH-cam channel that's now a product company too. I bought this bag nine months ago and originally planned to make a simple review but found myself distracted by other things.
    It's a large tech focused backpack designed for zero compromises tech storage and well built but is the right bag?
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    /edit: There's a lot of controversy around Linus Tech Tips (LTT) and the Linus Media Group (LMG) currently. I am leaving this review as it stands as my opinions on the backpack have not changed about the product itself even if my opinions have changed about LMG.
    t seems absolutely absurd that I'd have to address this but this bag was NOT given to me free-of-charge by LMG/LTT nor was this review paid for in any shape or form nor do I have any relationship with LMG/LTT. I do not know any LTT employees. I have nothing to "disclose". I did not have any prior knowledge that any of my content would appear in LMG content, both times a total surprise to me. However, I still feel proud that professionals in the space would recognize my content.

      @@Reclinesmc Possible that LTT has google alerts but more likely was because I posted it on the official LTT discord in there merch section and a staffer sent him the vid since they thought it was cool.
      I'm so far off the radar as small YT channel, I'd bank on the later as I don't think someone like Linus has much time for just watching every bit of content about LTT or it's products. My guess is the vids that Linus comments on are brought to his attention by others.

    Well kind viewers, things are very certainly happening around LTT and LMG and probably more bombs about to go off.
    I’m leaving this video up as I enjoyed making it and the back pack is a nice pack regardless of LTT. It’s too bad as getting mentioned on WAN show and seeing a flurry of messages from excited friends certainly was a unique surprise and had my friend and I scrambling to find the clip then cracking beers in celebration.
    I don’t care to argue the goings on of LMG here. It’s disappointing, and you’re angry. However, I have zero to do with it. Also, I’d I ask you to extend that same courtesy to other small channels/creators.

      @@ausdavid yeah didn’t do that last last night, I’ve had conspiracy bros accusing me of me being some sort of paid off reviewer by LMG, which is absurd. I don’t know anyone at LMG or LTT and certainly haven’t been paid by them or gotten any compensation of any kind.
      The only people trying court me to review their products are knock off, no name power supplies with names like COPGAIN or the even more hilarious IFEART (which I assume is pronounced iFart) after I posted one review of a ugreen power brick. Believe me, no one is offering me paid contracts and certainly not a big famous TH-cam company nearly a year after their product shipped and already had plenty of reviews already.

      I hope people aren’t bringing negativity towards you and any other channel recently associated or even associated in the future. These are very specific issues the community holds with I would say, Linus specifically. Not even lmg as a whole.
      For anyone globbing that onto anyone else, shame on you. This man created something separate to that. Please learn to differentiate

    • @dmug
      @dmug  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@NELLYB thanks, I mean it. It’s mostly just I was paid off or got it for free or have some secret relationship with LTT, few comments with one going as far as to comment on unrelated content. Emotions are raw right now. I am an adult can deal with it, but it isn’t fun to be a scapegoat even for second. More so I worry people might throw hate at younger creators or people who’d take it more personally.

    The backpack is perfect for the so-called digital nomad. Someone travelling frequently, but mostly quite comfortably and with an emphasis on the ability to hold anything tech related you might want to carry with you in addition to clothing and other necessities.

    Great review! I got mine as a bday present from my brother and I’ve used my LTT bag too for both travel, work and gym bag. Using the lower loops on its sides, I attached carabiners on each side and hip straps that I found on Amazon. I used straps around the top loops as external carry straps hold a pair of boots with each boot on each side or yoga mat. It’s great for carrying tech and big enough to hold a large Wacom intuos pen tablet really well.

    Your point on price is solid. I was surprised when so many people complained about the price. I'm an IT technician and $250 for a solid tool/laptop backpack is quite common. I've seen some quite a bit more expensive. While I haven't bought the LTT one, as I need a backpack that can carry an assortment of screw drivers and other hand tools, I didn't understand the backlash.

    I ended up purchasing this backpack for college coming up in two weeks, sure it may not be the nicest looking bag because of its size but I know damn sure I will be able to carry all of my textbooks and devices with ease while some other people will be struggling. When looking at some of the other higher quality brands you had mentioned in this review I didn’t see a point in compromising storage space and comfort for something like a messenger bag albeit more on the style side of things, the price difference was negligible in the long run after taxes and shipping and I know I will be happy spending my days at college with this backpack to support me, thank you for this in depth review!

    I picked up a Dekine bag for almost 1/3 the cost of LTT which I'm happy with so far. It has most of those amenities. I carry a 16" laptop, 13" travel monitor in the back pocket, while I have a 14" in the main pocket of that particular bag.
    I feel I'm not the intended buyer for the LTT bag, but I'm a huge fan of the channel.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, you can a lot more bang for your buck in a brand like DaKine. The LTT bag is higher quality, materially wise, it's double lined and reinforced more than my DaKine was, uses nicer zippers and such but it really comes at a cost premium as it's gunning price wise for a luxury tech bag.
      I debated buying it for some time, and do not have any buyer's remorse but also I'd had very specific wants out of the a new backpack and the LTT bag checked those. I can't say it's 3x as good as DaKine you'd pick up from Sierra Trading post for like $70 but it is better.

    I'm using mine as a mix between travel tech bag and photography bag. I'm using the water bottle space to fit in a Ulanzi Tripod, and I have a small camera bag with 3 lenses, as well as my DJI Mini 3 Pro bag. I also carry 2 massive 26800mAh power banks, a Razer Blade 15, a mouse, a buuuunch of cables, 2 USB Wall chargers with 6 ports each, 2 earbuds, and some other random stuff like fiber cloths, travel-time meds, face masks, etc.
    When I take out most of the traveling overhead and use it just as a photography bag, it's amazing. I've actually used it for a day-long mountain trail, and it did its job perfectly. When I use it fully packed for traveling, it's incredible that it can do its job so well but I'm fairly certain I'm pushing it beyond its size limits and it would not fit under an airplane seat. It gets HEAVY.
    All in all, I love the backpack, and only wish it would have some sort of external water bottle compartment, mostly since I'm using mine for a tripod. Currently my best bet is clipping the bottle outside, but it dangles and becomes tedious due to the balance waving around. I get that Linus doesn't love external holders, but giving consumers the option is always a plus.

    Great video! I use this backpack as a bicycle commuter and I love it, so I was surprised to hear you say you don't recommend it for bicycle commuting. Why would you recommend something else for bike commuting? What specific advantages would more purpose-built bicycle backpacks have?

    • @dmug
      @dmug  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Generally speaking bike packs are sleaker, feature better venting so you don’t get as sweaty on the back or straps and often feature some level of water proofing. As a general rule when bike commuting you carry only as much as you need and the LTT pack is more “carry all the things” hence it’s heft.
      Some backpacks also can snap into luggage carriers and panniers and often have straps on the external frame so they can be sized down.
      If you like your pack for commuting and see no problems then by all means use it but there are advantages to an activity built pack.

    • @dmug

      It can function as a photography bag but not really a photography bag in itself, as it doesn’t have the lens organization that I’d associate with a Lowepro or Manafrotto backpack. I only carry two micro four thirds lens for a Olympus OM-D EM5 MKIII and on rare occasion, my manafrotto tripod. The hardcore photographers I know use bags better designed to carry several lens as they are shooting full frame cameras. I think it boils down to if you want a travel bag that’s laptop centric that’s big enough to carry a tripod and lenses or one specifically designed around photography.

    Thanks for sharing! I've been a bike commuter as well, and i view backpack waterproof shells more positively than you. I found that in NL weather, you have to get the ortlieb style or eventually ALL weatherproof backpacks will lose to the rain. Shells fix that problem, and if they ever leak you can replace the shell only, so you don't have to replace your whole bag if it leaked. Plus you can have normal backpacks with them and are not locked in to just one design if you have to have 100% waterproofness. +1 for separate backpack-shells is what i'm sayin' !

      @dmug  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good to know. I have only experience with my Ortlieb panniers which I used for 3 years until Covid killed my office and we went pure remote. They were absurdly good in terrible weather and I had a few miserable commutes where a bridge was lifted or train tracks were blocked and I had to reroute in a rain storm. I’d be soaked and cold but my laptop was fine.

    One of the best backpacks I have ever owned is from Osprey, the Atmos AG 65. LTT isn't even on my list of backpacks. As I also own a pair of Arkel Dolphins and pair of Ortlieb. Is the LTT backpack on the same level of craftsmanship as those bags, no it's not. The thing with Arkel and Osprey is the lifetime replacement warranty. Their almighty guaranty as they call it. The LTT backpack is near the same price as my Atmos.
    Should you buy it, with better options that are better supported, no. Buy it if you want to support your favorite creator. Simply put they want to put themselves in the same playing field as established companies like Osprey, Arkel, and Ortlieb.

    I feel so bad spending this much on a backpack. I probably would have survived with something so much cheaper, but got it anyways. I can't imagine a better designed backpack for my needs.

      It's a splurg, that is for sure. My personal thoughts are you can get probably 95% of it's features for half the price at fairly good build quality. I still like my backpack but it's something I can't say is a "must buy" as there's so many backpacks that might suit someone else's wants/needs better, often for less money.
