    Yes, this actually happened. It was the US Secretary of Defense that called his Russian counterpart asking if there were Russian forces in the area. The Russian counterpart denied that there were any Russian forces in the area. After the battle was over, the US Secretary of Defense allegedly called his Russian counterpart again and said "we have confirmed there no Russian forces in the area" as to politely say, we just obliterated whoever it was.

    If the Russian officer had admitted they crossed the Euphrates, then the soldiers would at least have been able to keep their lives if not their pride, but the officer lied, and told the American officer again and again that the troops weren’t Russian. So the Americans were like, “Great! It’s not Russians, let’s get whoever it is out of there,” and they did. So the Russian leadership let their soldiers down, which is sick.

      The Russian commanders consider all their soldiers expendable, even for low priority missions. They still have the mindset of commanders during WWI. Throw cannon fodder into the meat grinder. Soldiers are considered less expensive to waste than equipment, and there are so many available.

    • @stephaniestaley9811
      @stephaniestaley9811 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      Also a clear case of setting up plausible deniability. Russia was testing the U.S.’s resolve and seeing what we had on the defensive side without actually pitting their soldiers against ours, creating an international incident. The fact that they sent contractors rather than soldiers in and kept the planes on the ground says that the contractors were expendable. And the object wasn’t to win outright, but to gather information. They sent these not-very-good-guys in to die and got the info they wanted…

    The ignorance and overconfidence of the Russian and Syrian attackers is obvious in this example but is not their fault. To say their superiors sent them into a meat grinder knowing there was a chance that the US response could be an overwhelming air and artillery response, is an understatement. It seems likely this was a test of US resolve to hold the oilfield that was met with an extreme response instead of a metered response. The "overkill" was intentional to demonstrate that such incursions would not be tolerated. The staging for a potential attack that followed showed that they clearly had not learned their lesson and were willing to see if the US was still defending the area.

    As a US Marine M60E3 gunner '86-'90, who was thankfully never in any combat but was involved in Operation Desert Shield. It is difficult for many to imagine just how much hurt the US Marines (200,000 limit), and the whole US military can bring once they know exactly where the enemy is, and they don't have to worry about civilian casualties. Just prior to getting out, I was attached to the armory of HQ company of 2nd Battalion 3rd Marines Infantry Division. We had 150 Marines in our company, and the weapons we had in stock in the armory, were as follows...
    Twenty Four TOW systems
    Eight Mark19 automatic grenade launchers
    Fifty two 50 cal machine guns with tripods
    Thirty two M60E3 machine guns (7.62mm)
    Forty eight SAW (5.56mm Squad Automatic Weapons)
    One hundred and forty eight M16A2s
    Thirty two 9mm Barettas
    With that many weapons available for a headquarters company, none of the Marines even needed an M16. Can you imagine being shot at by a HQ company, and the least damaging weapon they had was a SAW that would fire at up to 1100 5.56mm rounds per minute at up to 1000 yards effective range? If you could even close to 500 yards after they ran out of rounds for all of those things, you would still have your hands full with Marines being able to pick you off very effectively at 500y without even using a scope on their M16s.

      Marine assets are similar to Army Cav units in that they have organic aviation and armor units in regimental or brigade structure.
      One thing I learned in Army Artillery school is that maneuver units at battalion/regiment will have an AF fire support officer for anything from an A-10 to B-52.
      As you note, maneuver units bring a lot of hurt with them and call on a lot more if available.

They are fighting a 21st century war, with 20th century equipment and using 19th Century logistics. The beatdown they did was a heavy handed response to deter any more incursions from the Russians. And the Russian pilots wanting to get into the fight probably didn't happen, because they would have been eliminated. However, the US Navy has the largest navy by combined tonnage, and most of the 12000+ tanks Russia has in service are really outdated, like T-55s and even WW2-era T-34s.

    U.S. Military doctrine tends to focus on the concepts of asymmetric warfare and targeted strikes. This means that, whenever possible, the commanders in the field will bring overpowering force to a specific target (or set of targets) to achieve their goals. This is why there was wave upon wave of different strikes - artillery, helicopters, air-to-mud (bombers), and drones - that kept pounding at the Wagner forces.
    As for why people might mistakenly think you're Russian, it probably has more to do with bad Hollywood actors than anything else - it seems that almost NOBODY in Hollywood is capable of a realistic Russian accent, so they settle on a European accent but with a deep voice. It's lazy acting on their part, but results in that particular stereotype.

    It's the accent. To people who haven't heard a native Portuguese speaker speak it sounds very similar to the native Russian speaker speaking English. Particularly European Portuguese. There's more Spanish influence in Brasilian Portuguese and it comes through in the accent. Your accent actually sounds like what I call "generic Eastern European bad guy" in American, Canadian, Australian, and British t.v. and film. Maybe Portuguese actors were easier to find to play bad guys during the cold war because you don't have that typical Western European sound and it just became industry standard, I don't really know.

    • @diogorodrigues747
      @diogorodrigues747 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not Spanish influence, actually Spanish influence is very low in Brazil. The reason why Brazil has a more syllable-timed sound has to do with indigenous languages, influences from Africa (Brazilian Portuguese does sound a lot like African Portuguese varieties) and a more old phonetic system in general that was lost in most of Portugal in the last few centuries.
