  • In this conversation with Robert Wright, David Bentley Hart explains the limits of the legal language used by Paul, and why the later Western idea of "paying off an angry God with the blood of an innocent victim" is a barbaric notion that wasn't part of the original Christian understanding.

I am re-reading through Paul's epistles after what Hart described as Augustine's misreading of Paul (especially Romans) and its influence of Western Christian thought. I wonder, then, just what Paul meant when writing to the Romans about how God will in fact judge those who have sinned (Romans 2:12-16) and their "storing up wrath" (Romans 2:5-8) for themselves-some translations even mention an impending "day of wrath."
