I actually did this recently with your instructor Stacey. She was amazing. I was surprised on how quickly I picked it up. I even went in the trees a few times which I would never do on a snowboard. My wife was not a fan...but she has zero MTB experience. This is a great winter sport for bikers.
I think what you guys do is great. It’s good to find a channel that acknowledges that there’s quite a few of us over 40 (no one is getting any younger!). I’m in the uk in lockdown so discovering your channel has been a nice bonus.
You guys are awesome! Channel is awesome! I’m 54, and snowboard and skied for many years, ski bummed in Vail/BC ‘92-99, MTB now as much as I can, and I don’t recall being this excited for winter in a long time because I cant wait to get on one of these 🙌🏾
I just had to comment on this video! First of all, Awesome!!! I came on a family ski trip and have skied a few times and not good and don’t care for it but do it so family does motorsports with me. Decided to rent a skibyk and told the guys I am 60 yr old mountain biker, motocrosser, sand duner guy and adrenaline junkie and this looks fun. They said its nothing like that and rented me a bike and that was my only instruction!!!! I got on it and can’t get enough! Like you said, in 10 minutes I was visualizing tricks that could be done, but didn’t have the skill to do yet 😅 So I had to figure out some technique with no help (I was the only bike on the hill) within an hour I felt comfortable I was having a blast to say the least! We are here for two more days and I am pacing waiting for the lifts to open so I can try some of you guys tips. I can’t believe there aren’t 100 bikes on the hill also!!
I tried out a snow scooter about 15 years ago. Similar(ish) to what you were riding but BMX handlebars and no saddle, you stand pretty much directly on the rear ski/skid. I found it hard to make it carve but I probably didn't have my weight forward enough. What did work was pointing the front wheel directly down the fall-line and skidding the back-end out to control speed/direction. I probably should have had some lessons but I was young(er) and all I wanted to do was send it of a jump ;-)
Dude one of my new friends introduced me to ski bikes this winter and I've gone twice just at our local ski hills. Already in the process of collecting parts for a simple budget build so the whole family can try next season. Will be a hardtail from an old unused MTB. They're so much fun! Thanks for the cool video.
@@JoyOfBike I'm in Edmonton, Alberta. I've gone to Sunridge Ski Area here. Most of our local hills and even the major ski resorts in the Canadian Rockies allow ski bikes. A few of the guys I know have all taken their homemade ski bikes to them without any issues as long as you follow the rules of that hill.
@@JoyOfBike Unfortunately the UK is not famous for its quantity of snow or ski resorts :-). I'll have to wait for when I move back to Greece. However once they become popular enough they will be rented out like skies and snowboards. Making them easier accessible to try before buy.
I worked on a ski hill back in the early 00's and we had a load of those type 1 snobikes, we used to just thrash them about on our lunch breaks for a laugh. Although they were fun they felt so unsafe at speed compared to skis or a snowboard because your feet would just randomly swerve in or out if you caught a rut at speed, ACL snapper. These Type 2s look class, but in snowboots I would want massive pedals to stand on. Did you feel like you could plant all of your weight properly? Another fun video, I am on day 3 of manual practice working on your advice, started on the BMX, working my way up to the 29er, definitely scared of going of backwards on the 29er.
Thats a god question. they suggested snowboard boots but I just had some sorels. never felt like i needed bigger pegs. I guess more width might be a thing to play with. I'm used to moto footing so a bit wider might be interesting but i can see how it could be problematic too. It was shocking with the feet as close together as they were how HUGE a difference if you got your weight into the wrong peg for the circumstances. I bet in deeper snow it is a hoot!! I wore shin and knee pads too.
@@JoyOfBike Pads was definitely a sensible decision, i wouldn't want to take the edge of one of those mini snowboards to the shin. Wider pegs, or pedals, might give you that extra force to apply to the edges on steeper ground, like when you are on skis and you widen your feet turning on steep and icy. It is going to be interesting to see if these catch on and we end up with a snowbike group of people shredding, and all the casual skiers and snowboarders start to complain about the reckless snowbikers acting dangerously on the slopes. "You're going too fast", had that shouted at me so many times, whilst on a snowboard, but on skis nothing.
I was counting on this for when I’m too old to snowboard, but maybe I’ll start now (age 63) to get a head start on my skills. I figure with those luge-like things they use for physically challenged riders, Ill be able to carve snow turns as long as I live (one way or the other).
Holy Moses that looks fun. Glad you pre-made the Gumby reference. Was out trying bunny hops over lunch as our 4,000 feet of snow (estimated) has finally exited.
You are Gumby damnit! That does look like a lot of fun. How do I explain a ski bike to my wife? I didn’t think she would notice a new fork on my bike being the same colour and all but she did. They look like the GT snow racers but for adults. Thanks Alex and Lee.
I want to try this at Winter Park. I'm surfing around trying to figure out how to get a demo and lesson. I'm coming up short. Do you guys have any links or contacts to put me in the right direction?
It’s funny you say that. I think BMX fakies and such helped a lot because it’s practice at flipping inputs. My theory is doing the right thing and not the familiar thing is always good practice.
actually it help more. Most of us are DJ, Enduro, and DH bike rider but in winter we have to find something to bridge our riding with handle bars routine. Skibiking will help add skill how to control a bike wildly since you shred it side way with both ski a lot. All the jumps and bums are the same way. All the tricks that you do with DJ, you can always do it with skibike. Sure there will be some of adjustment but it is doable.. enjoy
I don’t ski as much as i used to. I’d just rather grab some bars, except I HATE fat tires on snow!!! So i wonder if this could get me back in the mountains in winter.
Great clip! I like that you quickly explained type 1,2&3. I can’t see me wanting to sit down or have a trike. But I wanna try a type 2. Q; Do you ever get hooked up in the bike when crashing? - bars in ribs, frame as hat stuff?
No. But I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a bigger risk as I jump more. Especially if I let go of the bars. Same stuff that leads to bars to the gut on a MTB.
Yes it is possible to get "hooked up" in the bike while crashing, just as it's possible with mountain biking or skiing. Sometimes if you are on steeper runs and you high side it, the bike can land on top of you (just as it would with mountain biking).
@@staceycarl4419 Seems worth it, though I remember when I went from skis to snowboard how good it felt to be rid of stocks and two skis which (during stacks) rarely stayed on your boots and let you ride out. Love mountain biking, so I’m keen to try.

A proper jet ski is. : ) A sit on top nah. Which is sad ‘cause nearly everything is better than a boat. I say this as a person who has owned 5 boats and all kinds of skis.
what a great video! So cool to see your 1 day progression. I'm assuming that the N+1 rule is also in effect with these bad boys.
These do fall under that master equation! I should have mentioned that!!!
True! There are different styles, so you end up with one of each.
No bindings, no uncomfortable boots...ever again. Ski Bike, fun, safe and easy as you get older! I want one!

Just a heads up, some ski mountains don't allow home built conversions and will only allow purpose-built skibikes.

Any tips on how to strap those wheels underneath the ski’s? What do you do with the wheels while you’re ski’ing? Thanks
