  • You need tools to make tools. Axes chisels and wedges offers a wide use, they can be used for almost anything, other tools are more directed. This is how I made log dogs using the stone tools made in previous videos. I am no woodworker but as far as I know a log dog is mainly used to hold a log in place when worked on, compared to an axe or a hammer that is a rather narrow use of a tool.
I have use of a log dog to keep refining the tree I cut down into wooden beams planks and to work it into functional objects and tools. Prior to a beam though I need to make another all-round tool; a wedge to split the log.
This is in the core of this channel: Making something to use when making something (even if I hence fourth temporarily will leave my preferred material metal to work in wood for a while). But it also touches upon the research I preform at the university concerning hand forging techniques. I have not only made a log dog but also two 90˚ corners with a rounded inner radius; a technique sometimes considered to be advanced and therefore unlikely to be made with primitive tools. But I argue that a craft is not primarily in a material or in a tool; it is in a human body. That is one of the most meaningful differences between a craft and an industry, the level of, and directness of a human being, an individual person present in a piece of work.

Ooh! Those are some rather pretty log-dogs! I remember these as one of the first things I forged when learning blacksmithing, along with firepokers! A rather useful tool, that is for sure!

Yeah, and the 90 degrees corner is an interesting challange to have.
