  • Converting Pit Latrines into Compost Toilets at the Police Barracks School, Moroto, Uganda, Africa. Pit latrines smell bad, breed flies, pollute ground water, and are an obsolete form of human sanitation. They can be replaced with compost toilet systems, as shown here at a primary school in northern Uganda. Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook (www.amazon.com/Humanure-Handb...) and The Compost Toilet Handbook (www.amazon.com/Compost-Toilet....

    Thanks for the recent email exchange and your advice. We are your newest subs. We will shortly post a video of our own on our pallet compost bin and our challenges with the climate here in South Central Colorado. Thanks!

    Good work you're doing! Now we need to evolve in California. Here, compost toilets are a hard sell, because most folks think that it's superior and "civilized" to crap and pee in our water supply.

      Its funny how we turn a vital composting material into a toxic liquid.

    Ironically this is how ancient Nile Valley toilets worked. So this is a return to composing toilets for Africa.

    @Joe Jenkins, Big fan of your book and videos. My question is about being In an urban area, in a desert climate and getting cover material. Saw dust and wood chips are not in abundance, but there is plenty of discarded newspapers and cardboard. If we shred the paper and cardboard, could that suffice as cover material?

    Bio digesters waste treatment system for interior or exterior use, better than septic system and compost toilet.

    What happens to the final compost at the back of the toilet in the mesh?

      It's used to grow plants.

    Can straw be used directly into the receptacle? Like fine straw?

    • @jcjenkins01
      @jcjenkins01  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dry straw inn the toilet receptacles would not b a good idea. Partially rotted somewhat damp straw could work.

    I realize this video was about a large group, a school, but thereis a type of composting toilet for a household. Almost no work involved, and you still get composting material.
    Video title: "My Toilet Makes Compost - No Water, No Chemicals, No Smell"
    By the way, I don't know the lady in the video or how to build them. I just happened to run across the video recently.

    Is urine collected in the same bucket or separately?

    • @jcjenkins01
      @jcjenkins01  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same receptacle. No need to separate it when composting. In fact, it's counter-productive.

    @ Joe Jenkins, would some type of tree leaves be more suitable than other leaves for placing into the receptacle? I've got maple trees in my area.
    Are certain leaves better than using wood chips?
    Do wood chips mask the odor better and therefore it was used, in the school, in this video or it was something suitable and more readily available? Or are wood chips a good choice because they are more dense and take up less space vs leaves?

      Joe Jenkins World Dry Toilet Conference 2018 paper, Compost Toilets in Nicaragua, is now available for download here as a PDF file: humanurehandbook.com/downloads/Nicaragua_Paper.pdf

      Read the paper I link to regarding wood "chips." Leaves may require that they be piled up and allowed to degrade before using as cover material. Every situation is different and may require some time for learning and adjustment.

      BYOTP. A lot of people use water instead. Or nothing.

      Joe Jenkins : Thanks for a quick response. Also I wonder what happens after a compost bin is full and mature, is there a video that would explain this for me.

      Check out my humanure compost playlist. For some reason TH-cam won't let me paste a link.

    What about pee?

    • @jcjenkins01
      @jcjenkins01  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about it? It goes into the toilet like any other toilet. Pee is not separated.
