Why the video clips of a two-lane rural highway, apparently US 80?

Good point, must have slipped in the wrong clip at that point and didn't notice. It's my clip too, so a weird mistake.

I heard i8 has annoying check points and possibly cartel issues.

I8 has no more check points than I10, California has agricultural checkpoints on all entries coming into the state. As for cartel issues, it is close to the southern border, right on it in many cases, but it is not less safe. I live in Arizona and haven't heard any news, nor experienced any cartel issues while driving to southern California.

@@nerdgasmicadventures8700 Thanks, I was planning a trip first into Scottsdale and than to San Diego, but California's gas prices, parking fees and endless restrictions might be a deal braker.

You're not wrong there. California's prices are very high. Scottsdale/Phoenix is a good place to visit. Maybe drive up north to Sedona, good weather and beautiful scenery.

If going to Orange County, then probably I-8 better, if going to Pasadena, Inland Empire, or SF Valley, then I-10, BUT, consider using I-8, and then CA-86 in El Centro which after a few small towns, then makes a beeline to I-10 in Indio, Ca.

also, if want to make better time using I-8, then use I-15 instead of I-5 to get to LA area, especiall if going inland empire like Riverside, Corona, or east Orange County cities such as Yorba Linda, Anaheim Hills, Fullerton, Brea, or even southeast part of LA county such as La Mirada, Norwalk, or Whittier (via the 91).

CA-86 is a four lane divided highway at mostly full freeway speeds (65)

this serves as a 'second Phoenix Bypass Route' for those travelling to and from SoCal to Texas and beyond (be mindfull of time of day driving thru El Paso, that traffic can get NASTY and there is a lot of construction on I-10 between El Paso and Texas/NM state line - big bottleneck.

about 30 miles east of El Paso, speed limit jumps to 80 for next 450 miles until 30 miles before San Antonio

I8 goes to San Diego, I10 goes directly to LA

Yes, but there is a choice if you're going to LA, it's about the same amount of time.
