Noise Pollution Is Much Worse For You Than You Think

  • Noise pollution is one of the types of pollution we don't often think about. The World Health Organization, CDC, and researchers worldwide have been warning against the effect it has on human health for decades.
    We spoke with Ted Rueter, founder of Noise Free America, and Kit Frank, an audiologist at NYU Langone Health, about what they think of noise pollution and the damage it can do to our hearing and overall health.
    Noise Free America has been battling noise pollution in America for years. One of their latest approaches was to publish the book "Guide to Modified Exhaust Systems: A Reference for Law Enforcement Officers and Motor Vehicle Inspectors."

    It's a terrible and serious problem. In my city (Ciudad de México) is unbelievable the amount of noise almost everywhere, but it's such an essential part in our culture (sadly) that I think it's gonna be very hard to solve it, at least not in short term.

      Yes, it's true. In some cultures there is a lot of acceptance of noise and I agree with you that it will be difficult to change it. I think it would help to make people aware of a certain rule: the noisier a country is, the poorer its citizens. It is worth paying attention to the fact that silence is needed to develop the mind, learn and study. Wealthy districts are always quiet, peaceful, because only rest in peace allows people to achieve high mental and physical performance, and the rich realize that this is necessary to maintain their status. I think that if people universally understood why silence is needed, they would demand it in every country.

    Perfectly said - you can function among these sounds, you can have the feeling of "being used to" them, but their harmful effects persist. No matter what the person thinks about it. The earplugs you speak of are a solution, but only when it comes to protecting your hearing itself. A sound wave also consists of a frequency, the lower the frequency, the more harmful it is to the body as a whole. This is the fact that even deaf people can be harmed by noise, because it hits the whole body as a wave.

    Great video! I posted about the noise pollution problems in Reddit when I was living in DC, Austin and now LA. In almost every case, most people didn't seem to care, or they would say something like "go live in the country." I am majorly affected by noise pollution and I am in fact moving further away from cities, and I also successfully convinced DC to roll out sound cameras that can automatically ticket loud cars. I think the migration to EVs will help a lot in reducing noisy cities, and I do wish there were bans on any loud noises on Sundays like he mentions in Germany. I consider this to be a very serious issue and I wish people would take it seriously and we could have quieter cities, but as long as you're allowed to rip the muffler off your car and make your car sound like a NASCAR racer, there are always going to be assholes who ruin it for everyone. "Freedom!" they'll say. But honestly, I've given up trying to fight the system. I'm going to relocate further out to the country to find quieter (and more affordable) living options. I can see a world in 2035 where most cars are EVs and cities are much quieter, but in the short term I think we just have to suffer with the fact that cities are very loud and most people don't consider it to be a problem.

    • @stopthenoiseglobal
      @stopthenoiseglobal 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Europe, noise lovers also repeat the text "move to the countryside", which is absurd. I don't know what it's like in US, but in Europe the countryside is louder than the city. In the countryside there are more huge machines used for agricultural processing, which without exception, reach above 100 dB, they are much louder than any legally registered car. In addition, there is a huge problem with the noise of motocross bikes and quads. Farm areas are rather small so you can't really distance yourself from or cut yourself off from these noises. For this reason, moving to the countryside may only make matters worse in Europe. I think it may be different in the USA because of the size of the country.

    A sound pressure level meter app is interesting and useful, but it's an awful lot of data reduced to just a number - no context. May I suggest that a (continuous) spectrogram is far more informative: x-axis for time, y-axis frequency, volume color-coded.

    please help raise awareness on the damage that dogs that bark incessantly can have on human health. im miserable because of being exposed to this for around three years. we need laws against this and we need owners who do nothing to stop it go to jail and lose their dogs. if they arent being trained to behave or being properly taken care of, they must go to someone who can provide the education and environment a dog needs to not destroy the health of neighbors. this cant be tolerated anymore. we need to talk about the types of noises that invade our houses. sometimes we just cant escape from the noise. thats the worst type of noise pollution. if its outside and its stay there, it wont affet those inside. so we have to talk about the ones that do affect us even inside our houses, that were supposed to be safe places from all of this noise.

    Constant lower than 65 db is also not good, and there are medical, peer reviewed studies that show that lower hertz 20 - 200 hz can cause serious issues, especially if daily. Oh, and lower than 20 hz which your ear can't hear? Yeah, your brain can still detect the vibrations and if constant can also cause issues. Noise pollution is a serious issue that affects not only your hearing, but also your mental and physical health.

    I use a volume limiter on my Airpods to limit the max SPL to 85 dB. I prefer listening to my music around 63 to 70 decibels. I have good hearing and pitch recognition up to 17.5 KHz, I however have tinnitus from the days of blasting my car stereo often but, I put an end to that bad habit 2.5 years ago after the tinnitus got bad enough. A habit of blasting a car stereo on max volume for a month of 1-hour daily commutes to work can be as damaging to a human hearing an airbag deployment from an accident if not more. I wear Ear Pro when I'm doing loud activities such as attending a loud concert or driving more than a couple screws with a cordless impact driver.

    • @grassytramtracks
      @grassytramtracks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not as much as you might think, at low speeds, they have to make a sound so people hear them, but a major, but often overlooked aspect to noise is the rolling noise created by the tyres rolling along the road. Electric cars are heavier, so the rolling noise is more than for a petrol or diesel car. The real solution is less cars, more walking, cycling and public transport

      Not if they re barking at your neighbors out front that aren't causing a problem (there are some good neighbors ) while the crooks are breaking in your back door and you can't hear them because you didn't teach them the differance . There is more to being a pet owner than just a big ole bag of ole' Roy dog food. You need to spend the time and socialize them. Love them enough to keep them safe . Teach them your neighbors don't deserve to be yelled and screamed (barked) at by your dog.
      Here where I live it's against the
      law to have an aggressive dogs .
