Happy to say this video is still excellent in 2019! Just had a TN410 cartridge refilled locally and it did NOT work. Before taking it back (involving a long drive) I decided to try to fix the problem myself. Watched this video, found the problem (the reset spring not positioned properly) and it works perfectly now. Thanks!
i watched this video whenever i have to replace the toner. short and helpful video. been watching it for past 5 years. plz don't remove it. its very very helpful.
Very helpful video. If you want to just reset the cartridge like I did, you can skip to about the 3 minute mark to see how the gears should be aligned.
Thank you viandant5 for excellent instructions. What your description says (READ IT PEOPLE!) is true: when the new cartridge is inserted the contrast is reset. This is why you should not (on some printer models) just reset the "replace toner" message (or LED). When you do that the contrast is reset and you will get light printouts. When you replace (or refill) your toner cartridge AND reset the "replace toner" message the new cartridge will give correct contrast again.
I just replaced with a new cartridge on a Brother fax/copier and the print is really really DARK! Anything with an even semiwhite background (cartoon from newspaper), the "white" spaces turned out very dark. I had to increase the brightness to get regular printouts. So whatever changed for the new cart, it over did itself.
This is a very good and concise video displaying in accurate detail the steps to properly maintain and care of your toner cartridge. I had ordered a toner refill kit from another vendor but the copied instructions were not very clear but this video cleared up everything. I approve this video for anyone wanting to know how to properly refill their reusable toner cartridge. In fact i would buy toner refill kits from LINK Creative or from the reseller of this video. Thanks again for this video.
Well I successfully refilled my 2170W starter cartridge. I placed the reset gears onto the existing starter hardware, screwed back together, and seems to work fine. Printed a number of pages with excellent clarity. The reset gears go in 1. flag gear 2. large gear 3. small gear last. I previously plugged the optical holes and still have tape over the holes.
The actuator gear position shown at 3:02 has the arrow pointing to approx. 4 o'clock. This is correct for a TN420 cartridge, but a TN450 should have the arrow pointing to 5 o'clock. I refilled a starter cartridge this morning, and installed a TN450 spring, flag gear, and cover. Then I printed some test pages (using the 'go-go-go' method). With the arrow in the 4:00 position and the status showed 50% toner remaining. Moving the arrow to 5:00 put the toner remaining at 100%. Great video! :o)
Great video. Easy to follow instructions.... though I don't have always the option with the compressed air..... You really did a PRO job with the cleaning and refill process..... Thanks for the instructions and the great video.
I'm using Brother HL-2240 with the preinstalled toner cartridge for now..... I'm thinking about the new generic TN-450 for later..... So, if I refill the starter cartridge and install the reset gear on it, I only get +/- 700 pages?? Is it best to get the new generic TN-450, which will get me +/- 2600 pages?? Thanks viandant5 and great video.
viandant5 Thanks for the reply. I'll get the reset gear....... How many times do you think it's recommended to refill the Brother cartridge (the starter one, the TN-420 or the TN-450)?? Thanks
Sofar this seems like the easiest laser cartridge to refill.. the plug is there for you to refill with a minimal disassembly. I still think refilling an ink cartridge 5-8x instead is easier, but to each their own (my hp 7410 is on 18k pages and counting). 8k pages for $8 black toner (assuming 2 refills) vs 8k on 16oz of refill ink (assuming 12 - 15 refills) for $12, your choice. It's almost dead even when you factor in the cheaper cost of the cartridges as a consumable over time (more expensive ink vs cheaper cartridges). Props to brother for making this easily refillable. BTW, a can of compressed air would also work for this.. minimal moisture, just use SHORT bursts w/ the straw.
Search in this channel "Brother HL2140 TN360 TN2120 Toner Cartridge Remanufacturing and Reset Instructions". You'll find the instructions for your cartridge. it's not possible to refill the starter cartridge because the reset gear is missing.
Turn off the printer. Hold down the Go button as you turn on the power switch. Keep the Go button pressed down until Toner, Drum and Error leds light up. Release the Go button. Make sure that the Toner, Drum and Error leds are off. Press the Go button again. The printer will print a Test page. or If you are using Brother's Windows printer driver, click the Print Test Page button. It is in the General tab of the Windows printer driver.
2 more questions. There is one more roller that is not mentioned. The developer roller I believe. I think it is the one that heats up. Should we be doing anything to clean that? I was thinking of refilling two cartridges at the same time but the standby one would probably be sitting unused for several years. I know laser printer toner can stay good a long time but should I wait and refill the standby cartridge until it is needed or will it be as good as new if it sits for 5 or so years unused?
Do you mean the fuser roller? You can clean it with alcohol, or a dedicated cleaner. For the other question, I think that cartridge is still good, you can refill it
If I'm not mistaken, the 2170W printer uses a TN330 or 360 cartridge. But maybe your video still applies to 330/360. I'm trying to refill the starter cartridge that came w the 2170W. Can I successfully refill a starter cartridge?
#1 About how many times can this refill be done before other components just start to wear out? Assuming the user goes past the low toner warning but refills as soon as the printer refuses to print, resetting reset gear required. #2 When parts start to wear can we just replace them and rebuild the cartridge instead of throwing the whole thing away? I am sure this is what brother does when they offer a free shipping label to send in old print cartridges to be recycled.
A Brother cartridge could be refilled around 2-3 times before the blade or the toner roller start to be worn. Yes it's possible to change the blade or the roller, the only parts that wear. However I think Brother throw the cartridge you send to them, obvioulsly respetting the law
Don't we need to empty the waste hopper? I did not see any mention of that in this video. I only saw the part about cleaning out the new toner compartment but not the waste hopper.
@@viandant5 Does the unused toner then just get scrapped back into the main toner compartment then? That would make it even more important to be sure and get all of the old and waste toner out.
its really worked well ,thank you , i am using brother DCP 7060 D model , for refilling i did your instructions and finally its printing , but the printing quality is not good ,i mean the whole paper is blurred with the ink,can you help me to find solution for this ....
viandant5 sir. where can i get/buy this toner powder for refill? your video is very helpful and i'm planning my first refill of cartridge tn 450. thank you sir
The test page doesn't seem to work with my HL 2240: "TEST PAGES Press "GO" key 3 times, within 3 seconds, with the front cover closed and the "READY" light on." Do you know how to print the test page on the HL2240? thanks!
I hope it’s not too late to get some help here. I’ve looked at tons of videos, but can’t seem to get this to work (HL-2270DW). I have a starter cartridge, and I have a replacement side panel. The only steps on your video I didn’t do was use compressed air and clean the roller, only because the previous videos didn’t say that and I had already put in new toner. But that should only affect the quality not the cartridge actually working, correct? Can I not convert the starter cartridge with this side panel? Anyway, I followed all the steps (multiple times) and I believe I have everything right (flag in the right position and the gear next to it pointing as directed), and I’ve done the button voodoo to reset the cartridge, but every time it tries to print it make three awkward roller sounds and gives me an error message. I’ve checked and rechecked and can’t figure out what’s off. And the gears are all meshing, just for the record. ACK!
Mr. Marshwhite which is the defect? it does not recognise the cartidge? the starter cartridge has a different side panel but it has no reset gear. do you insert the reset gear? probably the reset gear is not in the right position
viandant5 Thanks for responding!! As far as I can tell it recognizes the cartridge. frankly, it sounds like something is not jiving with the gears, but I have checked and rechecked (following your video step by step) and the flag is right, the reset gear matches exactly as the does the arrow pointing and the spring. I am baffled. I think I better order a new cartridge, see if something else is going on....unless you have another suggestion. I hate to give up, but something is amiss.
Mr. Marshwhite try this to reset the toner sensor. - Open the front cover - Turn the printer off. - Hold ""GO (START)" button while turning the printer on. All lights will be on. - Release "GO" button - Press "GO" button 2 times. All panel lights will be on. - Press "GO" button 5 times. The toner light will be off. (error may be flashing) the paper light should be on or flashing. - Close the cover. The ready light should be the only light on.
viandant5 I had done that several times. Something finally clicked and we're back in the game! Seriously, thanks for all your help; it's very kind of you.
I successfully printed the test page on the HL2240 - realhoo below comments: "Then I printed some test pages (using the 'go-go-go' method). With the arrow in the 4:00 position and the status showed 50% toner remaining. Moving the arrow to 5:00 put the toner remaining at 100%." How do I see on my test page the percentage of toner remaining? Almost at the bottom of the test page I see two graph bars - do they show the percentage of toner remaining?
Are the starter pack and TN420 identical except for the missing reset gear? I received a toner refill kit and they sent out a reset gear and a new cover so it could be fit on. Is the toner compartment on a starter big enough, or identical, to take toner measured for the high yield version?
hello, when a refill the toner does not damage the parts, agradecere reply , another is , how many times can I refill the same toner , which brand is recommended
no, this is a very simply cartridge and there is no problem to damage a part of the printer, if correctly done. you may refill the same toner for at least 3-4 times. it depend on the conditions of the developer roller and the developer roller blade. there is not a best brand of compatible cartridge, all cartridge are virtually the same, made in china

low yield cartridge has 50 grams of toner. Yes, you can put high yield reset gear in starter cartridge. may be you'll have to modify or change the side plate
probably more than 100 grams of toner is unuseful. after a certain number of copies, the machine send the message "Toner Empty", not important how much toner is left in the cartridge
I'm confused about why it's stated in the video to be sure to put the actuator gear in that particular position, but then the person refilling continues with it in a different position.

Thank you for putting up the video, but WHY use an annoying, computer generated voice that you can't understand half of what it's saying?
english is not my language, with my own voice you would not understand nothing. the voice is necessary to have CC subtitles.
