My dad gave me his guitar today. And all I can say is this guy is EXTREMELY easy to learn from. I really enjoy listening to everything he says.
I think he has made it more complicated than it needs to be. And for pitch stability I would pull the pitch up a hair too high, then let it down, not the other way around which is what Marty suggests.

Today i got a early birthday gift from my uncle. My uncle had been playing guitar for 17 years, and i have always wanted one ever since i was little. On my 10th birthday i got the guitar and i was crying so much 😭 i really am blessed and i wanna give him credit for all of his love 🙏

Just got my first guitar at 22yo! I know nothing about music, and I know this is going to be quite the challenge, but I'm excited to learn for once. If I could even learn to play one song at some point would be incredible. I just gotta keep reminding myself to not get down when things are tough, because learning a hobby isn't a race. There's no one person to "beat", and doing it is supposed to be fun! 😄

Really appreciate the tip about lowering below the note and then tuning up to the note to keep the tension. Seems like common sense, but Im a total beginner and the guitar kept falling out of tune until now. Thanks a lot! Wish everyone the best with learning or continuing your guitar journeys.
I rely on electric tuners. I need to get better at tuning by ear. It's embarrassing to pick up a guitar and not be able to quickly tune it.... and those high E strings break so easily if you go a little too far!
A tip would be to press the 5th fret on the first string. Whatever that sounds like, you need to tune the second string to sound just like that. Do this for the next 2 strings but after you tune 3 strings, for tuning the 5th string, instead of pressing the 5th fret on the 4th string, you press the 4th. Hope you understood that, it's difficult to explain ^^'
I was like that for a long time until I buckled down and did what everyone said I should: sing. If you can tune your voice, you can tune your guitar. Some unsolicited advice hopefully it helps haha.

Marty you are awesome. My son learned to play from watching you. I have played for 30 years or so but never took lessons. I learned from watching friends but never knowing what chords names were and just learned the songs they knew. My son said I should check you out so here I am as a new guitar person learning what I should have learned from the beginning.

When I first started learning guitar around 2007, my tutor at school taught us the phrase "Eddie Always Drinks Guiness Before Eating." I've not picked up a guitar in about 13 years now but that phrase still stays with me.

Thank you Marty! Been wanting to give guitar a go again after about 50 years so at nearly 60 I pulled a guitar out of the closet and found you. Sorta, kinda tuned it, will pick up a tuner and pick next week (live far from a city) so between now and then I'll just muddle through with what I have. I'll let you know how I'm doing as I work through your videos.

I like to use harmonics to fine tune after the initial tuning, I find that it's much easier to hear individual strings that are out that way. Afterwards a strum on the of the open strings will let you know if you've got it.
Often I'll just use a tuner for the low E, then tune by ear from there off that string using harmonics.

Hi, watching this after being a session musician for many years ..more recently (2022) im goin back to the Kaola Beamer tuning. Cant do it myself but its utterly pure & beautiful .
The way i understand it is that you start with a standard tuning. Then you 'out-tune ' it. By that i mean say, take G, then you have to tune the guitar to G all the way thru each string/up the guitar. So, you then have a very loose sound. It does restrict how much you can work it but it gives yiu a freedom ...
