Haha, I was so happy to see this video, for I have a bunch of tomatoes ripe at the moment. Though looks like I am going to have to wait for the next video, how to make that sauce, lol. I hope they will last me that long. Thanks for teaching! And for people with a dehydrator, I learned from Heidi, from Rain Country, to put a cotton cloth on the rack. I used some old cotton pillowcases, it works perfect! And after use, if something made them dirty, you can wash them, and use them again. Much love! 🤗
I just dehydrated a whole bushel of Roma tomatoes; it took me a few days between my dehydrator and my oven. I sliced them thinly and dried them skins and all. The dehydrator took a min of 8 hrs, but kept the color. The oven, at its lowest setting 175, also took hours, but the color turned out darker. When the slices were all dry, I pulverized them in my blender. I now have about 1 1/4 quart of tomato powder which I add to soups, sauces, etc. 😊
After my wife blanched two bushels of organic tomatoes from her garden, she freeze-dried the skins(which she normally would have added to the compost pile) and ground them to a powder in the blender. Thank you for this clever and tasty addition to our home food storage supply! You always have something good to share with all your devoted friends!
Hi Miss Mary, I wanted to share how I do my tomato power. I cut up my whole tomatoes. Place them in a blender and puree. Pour in to fruit leather trays and dry in my dehydrator.
I love the fact that you can re-hydrate the powder and have exactly the quantity of tomato paste you need. No more unused tablespoons at the bottom of the can!
Another great video. Thanks, Mary!! I want to share with you a little thing I like to do with tomatoes--usually grape or cherry tomatoes--I slice them in half pole-to-pole. Drizzle a little balsamic vinegar over them and sprinkle a little Italian seasoning (your mix is wonderful for this) stir them around to get them coated well, and then dehydrate them. Once they are dry, they taste like pizza. But I also powder that and use it as a base for my homemade pizza sauce or pasta sauce. And I have even mixed it into some softened cream cheese for a wonderful cracker spread.
Mary, I have never heard of tomato powder before and this is a wonderful thing you have shared! Usually when I’m canning my tomatoes and take the skins off they go in the garbage but now they are going to be Tomato Powder!! Thank you and God Bless! 😇 Virginia in Arkansas
I've never heard of this either, & I'm a 62 year old female. So, I already know it'll be fantastic, & FULL of flavor. 😋 Perhaps Mary thought of this fabulous idea! ♥️
I wanted to do a dorito flavored pork rind because I bought cheese powder and jalapeño powder and we don’t eat grains. I looked on the ingredients list and it says tomato powder. I thought oh I need to get tomato powder and make some spices up and I can do a Dorito flavored pork rind
Mary, thank you so much for your wisdom and positivity! ❤️ Life has been a bit hectic for me lately - homeschooling 3 little ones, prepping to move, chronic health issues for me and my partner, combined with a big tomato harvest - it's a little overwhelming right now. Thank you for being here like a nice friend. Watching your videos is so calming and I have learned so much. Thank you for being the homestead "mom" I really need. I appreciate you!
I look forward to seeing you on Saturday mornings. I learn so much and my confidence in cooking; preserving; and using what I have in smarter ways grows. Thank you so much!
Very timely! I've been drying and powdering many of my vegetables this year out of necessity. We live in a very small cabin and the powder takes up so much less room. Today I'm busy canning chicken, potatoes and tomato jam and sweet green tomato jam. Trying to get this done so my fall plants can go into the ground tomorrow. Hugs from our mountain top homestead to yours.
@@bronzefox9035you can use jello to make a plethora of flavors to your liking. I have so far made strawberry tomato jam and raspberry tomato jam out of green tomato puree. That particular year I had a bumper crop of unripened green tomatoes at end of season and I wasn't about to waste them! Nobody has ever guessed that it was made with tomatoes and their reactions when you tell them is HILARIOUS! 😂
Thank you Mary! In my home, we make a lovely beverage with V8 juice, raw apple cider vinegar, and sparkling water. I’d love to create a recipe to make a V8-style powder mix for long term storage...and this seems like a natural first step.

Tomato powder - terrific idea! Mary, with the bounty of tomatoes this time of year, would you consider producing a video of how to make tomato soup? I had a great recipe years ago & misplaced it. ❤️🍅❤️
Hi from Australia works great in the dehydrator we decided to get a freeze dryer so I do mine in there now both methods are great, with the freeze dryer it retains more of the nutrients
Hi Mary. I absolutely love this idea! Tomato powder to boost dishes sounds phenomenal. Being a Texan as well, I wondered, have you ever dried tomatoes or peppers in a grill or smoker, like the low setting on a Traeger? I have a dehydrator, but now I’m super curious about smoking tomato skins too.
If you ever do this.... please update. I am curious myself. I've also been wanting to smoke some peppers and preserve them. The tomato powder has a wonderful flavor. It's much stronger than I thought it would be. Today, I have some tomato that are ready to come out of the freeze dryer... I'm getting ready put them through the spice grinder, into a jar and then seal the jar using my freeze dryer. The tomato skins really do give dishes a wonderful flavor!
Hi Mary, I made a salsa and forgot to add the DWV to the salsa when cooking! Can I open the jars, add DWV, re-cook, then hot-water bath can? It's been a busy season!
Thanks for the info I’ve been wanting more info on this. The temperature actually does matter because higher temps destroy more of the nutrients in our food, but If people have no other choice you do the best you can. The question is why are ovens inferior quality with limited uses today instead of better.
Hi Tracy, Yes indeed - the lower the temp the better - but some folks have no other choice. You are right - modern day ovens seem to offer less flexibility. Love, Mary
I make flavored pork rinds because we don’t eat grains or potatoes and I bought some powdered cheese off Amazon and jalapeño. I was looking at the Dorito bag and it says tomato powder. And I thought oh I need to get some tomato powder next. But shoot if I can make it at home that would be cool
Thanks for sharing. Tomato powder is one of the ingredients in the tamarind-based sinigang seasoning blend. Sinigang is my most favorite food. I need to make my own blend but the tamarind powder is out of stock. I'd likely need a large heated greenhouse to grow my own tamarind tree. We're doing well. I rearranged some things inside and outside of the house. The box I had my bakeware and some papers in broke so I had to move them around. Also got the change of mailing address mail. I tried to use my move app but it glitched and it wouldn't let me use my code twice. I change my voter's registration address. Also helped my brother move some things form the second bathroom as he is redoing the flooring in there.
Thanks for the video! I've never made tomato powder, hadn't heard of it, but excellent idea, probably really great in rice dishes, sauces, dry rubs, etc. First thing I'm going to prep my pantry with when I get home!
Hi Mary. Am a first timer am glad i found your channel i have been looking at a good few. I have already make the yogurt it turn iut great. Am going to make the vinegar and the pickle lemon and limes and anything else . I love.looking at your recipes. I will try more of your recipes for sure. But i was wondering if i can use the Airfryer to make this Tomatoes powder and if so can you give the advice. Thanks in advance. Have a bless night and a safe and lovely week.
Hi Sorin, Thank you so much. Glad to hear you like this video. I am using the tomatoes to make a homemade marinara sauce. Stay tuned - that video should be out this coming Wednesday or Thursday. Love, Mary
If the skins are good to dehydrate, do I need to peel the tomatoes before I dehydrate them sliced? I suppose the slices will dry faster without skins? Thank you for your informative videos!!
Hi Mary. Thank you for sharing this! I wanted to ask about color- I made my powder in December 2022 and I've noticed that it's gotten lighter in color. Is this normal? I didn't vacuum seal it and just left it in a dark cupboard thinking I'd use it. I never got around to it and I'm wondering if it's still good to use. It hasn't caked and still smells good. Just wondering your thoughts on this. 😊
I haven’t watched this fully but very interested in learning...if tomato skin and seeds are nightshade lectins.... is this process useful for those with digestion problems?
I have my tomato, skins and seeds from a food mill. Do I do the same just put them on parchment paper and as thin as I can, they don’t play flat like the ones you’re doing on this video.
Hi Mary, I got 12 peaches and decided to can them... I blanched them, removed the skin, sliced and put in water with fruit fresh. When I was done slicing I put in hot jars with a light syrup and debubbled I processed in my steam canner. When I took out... there was white foam in the jars. What do you think that is? Hoping tomorrow after they have cooled and sealed that they are okay
I have never thought about using the skins separately. I have sliced tomatoes as thin as I could get them, dehydrated the slices and pulverized the dried slices. I’m going to save the skins and use this method for tomato powder. Great video. Thanks! 😀
every year - in tomato production season - i make a lot of tomato concentrate and freeze it in order to consume it over the year. There is a tremendous amount of water separated and wasted from tomatoes. What can i do with or is there any use of that tomato water ? your beloved follower from Sudan, shady abbas ali 🥰.
I bought a large survival bucket of dehydrated tomatoes. I sealed them in individual air vacuumed bags. Do you know how long they will last and if they lose nutritional value? Ty
I was watching someone last year or the year before. They had a tool for easily opening the 5 gallon food bucket's. Was that you? I would like to know the name and where I could find one if it was you. thanks
Hi Linda, I may have showed that in a previous video - not sure. But the name of the tool is a "Bucket Lid Wrench". Sometimes it will also simply be referred to as a 5 Gallon Bucket Opener Tool or a 5 Gallon Bucket Lid Remover Tool. Hope this helps. Love, Mary
Great question! If you are drying just the skins, probably about 6 hours or so. And if you are drying tomato slices, a lot depends on their thickness but probably around 12 hours. Love, Mary
It may not be super healthy but I dry vegtables for my dogs in the microwave. I dry thin strips pumpkin its so quick that you have to make sure it does not burn. 🙄
Some of these commercials are so stupid. This girl is like "my dog is eating my underwear, what can I do about it"? I'M like, pick your underwear up out of the floor and put them in the dirty cloth's hamper ya dummy ! lol That being said I never used the skins for powder I usually use tomato past and or sauce, because we always end up with a lot of canned stuff that needs to have something done with it and it cleans up space in the pantry. Of course I do the same when there is a too many going on in the garden. A lot of my excess tomatoes also go to the homeless and poor folks when I go somewhere and my wife is inside at doctors or wherever we are going I just load the trunk with it and put up a sign saying fee vegetables and folks take it off your hands pretty quick. I have never had any left by the time my wife gets out of wherever she is doing her thing at. And in the rare occasions something is going bad and I am not going anywhere well it goes into the compost pile. Needless to say I do not like to wast food. There is always something that can be done with it to benefit yourself and or others.
Hello marry, I think you are a very good professional cook but you talk too much, I think it is better to get on the job faster, no body interested all the thing you talking about, Any way thank you

You are so welcome!
Superb!
every year - in tomato production season - i make a lot of tomato concentrate and freeze it in order to consume it over the year. There is a tremendous amount of water separated and wasted from tomatoes. What can i do with or is there any use of that tomato water ?

Hi Mary, I’ve a question.. does this work with bell peppers, too??
Interesting idea! I have not tried it but I think it would work. Love, Mary
I bought a large survival bucket of dehydrated tomatoes. I sealed them in individual air vacuumed bags. Do you know how long they will last and if they lose nutritional value? Ty
By the way mine aren't really hard like a chip.
Mary can I reuse my canning water? Say for the next day?
Thanks merry
Thank you
I was watching someone last year or the year before.
Love, Mary
@@MarysNest thank you.
@G-man thank you.
Mine have been in the dehydrator for days, but won’t go crisp! What am I doing wrong. Thank you
Is there any way to make this last long term?
@G-man That's a great idea, thanks. I'm making a short list of things I'd like to buy before next summer. A vacuum sealer is on top of that list.
How long in the Presto type dryer?
Great question! If you are drying just the skins, probably about 6 hours or so. And if you are drying tomato slices, a lot depends on their thickness but probably around 12 hours. Love, Mary
@@MarysNest thank you!
Great!
How would you make tomato paste out of the tomato powder...or tomato juice??
How long does it last for ?
I would dehydrate store bought tomato paste for the powder and can the tomatoes.
FYI- you can peel peaches the same way💜
It may not be super healthy but I dry vegtables for my dogs in the microwave. I dry thin strips pumpkin its so quick that you have to make sure it does not burn. 🙄
Microwave can make toxins
How many tomato do I need to make this tomato powder?
Can you add milk and make tomato soup
ok question, this is tomato powder for sauce, What about making it into a tomato paste

Why 2 coffee makers on the counter ???
no need to peal the skin
Hello marry,
I think you are a very good professional cook but you talk too much,
I think it is better to get on the job faster, no body interested all the thing you talking about,
Any way thank you
