It seems like the effort of on page SEO though necessary may simply lead to powerful AI search engines never allowing click through to the hosted site which I believe is one of the biggest concerns. If the individuals searching never have to leave the ai search engine for content then the search engine will cease to be helpful in driving traffic to the site.
100% agree! The impact is huge when there is no click. Even Google itself is pushing hard on AI Overviews, so I don't think we are too far away from a zero click world and traffic will no longer be the only way of measurement. We're in the transition phrase where these AI engines still rely on traditional search results and search is still one of the major channels for traffic, so it's time to have the mindset shift to diversity efforts to other channels like social or owned media. My prediction is more gated content (human, quality content) and monetization model will change drastically... let's see
