Nothin' wrong w/ your shooting , Gun Sam . The ammo seemed to perform to text-book standards , and I can see why you choose to carry that little snubby . You're great with it . I own a Ruger "Single-Seven" w/ a 4.62" bbl which I on a blue moon carry , and I think I'll get me some of that Federal Hst as its carry load . It should offer even more expansion from the longer barrel .Yep , as usual , GREAT VIDEO !
Hurrah for the little hot caliber. Glad Federal has this option for it. Lot of things going for that 6-shot LCR, including at least two other cartridges that are viable with the right bullets.
I've watched lots of your videos where penetration is deeper into the gel with the denim and MDF. It surprises me every time because I intuitively expect it to penetrate less when going through the extra two items.
Had Ruger continued to make a 327 magnum Sp101 they would have a perfect competitor to both the Colt Detective and the Kimber. Then again I wish Smith could have made an affordable J frame
@@ftdefiance1 Would be a shame. From what I understand, the use of the 3" Ruger SP101 was the very gun that Federal used to create the cartridge around.
Great test. I just purchased 6 boxes of this for my Ruger 327. I'll go to the range check it out, get used to it and if everything goes ok, swap it out for the Underwood Extreme Defender as my carry ammo.
Yes, I have noticed this. Some people say that expansion can't happen below 1,000 FPS, but I have seen it at 600 FPS with some ammo. But jacketed ammo does seem to need a good amount of velocity, and over 1,250 FPS I don't think I have seen a hollow point not expand even if it was cheap.
Back in 2021, I decided the 327 was the round I would want-for both CC and home defense. However, NO gun shop I tried, whether online or in person could get the ammo or the firearm. One shop owner (I really trust) told me this difficulty would continue for several years. I live behind the Iron Curtain in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey, where it already takes five weeks to simply purchase a gun, so God knows when I could even see an available 327. This kind of bureaucratic quagmire makes my pursuit of a 327 futile. I have had two Ruger LCRs-one in 38 and one in 22LR. These DAO snubbies are designed for close-in use, not accuracy, especially at 75 yards. You did quite well all things considered. With a three-inch LCRx your accuracy in SA would likely be more than satisfactory.
Thanks for watching. If you get a chance to run them in organic gel, i'd love to see the results. It's unlikely beyond you and I, that anyone will test these in all of TH-cam.
I have a .32cal mad by H&R after I get the horrible trigger worked I plan to explore 32's. BTW 5 out of 6 with a 2in at 75yds very impressive. If I remember Mass State Police have a standard of 2 rounds at 75yds in 2 seconds from draw with aa 4in. Pistol. Time not a factor 5 hits at 75 with 2in. Scary good shooting!
I have always heard people talk 2" VS longer barrels, quote more sight radius with longer barrels and all of that. I personally have never seen that when I shoot. Maybe it's just my eyes but a 2" barrel VS a 6" barrel and the sights line up the same for me. I find grip size to be more of a challenge when it comes to long range accuracy more than anything.
The 327 Magum is my favorite revolver chambering and the LCR is a great choice for carry. Thanks for the video as I didn't know Federal came out with an HST load in 327.
I also carry an LCR 327. I stocked up on the 85-grain Hydra-Shoks. I shoot them very well. Felt recoil is on par with .38+p from the LCR 38. (Of course, the difference on fruit and jugs is dramatic.)
Seems like a great round. Maybe for another video you can do a VS of .38 +P or .357 mag in HST form VS this round. I'm just curious to see how this compares to the .38/.357 versions and also whatever is currently the best performing rounds in those calibers alongside this as well. Basically I'm trying to help find more excuses to make more videos featuring .327 Fed. Mag.. :)
A 327 should have Chevy in front of it. Kidding aside... Your accuracy isn't as bad as you say. I suspect that after running that ammo a bit more you'll like it and accuracy will suit you just fine. Gotta go. My wifey wants to know why a little round tosses that gun around.
Bought a case of this HST load and had a few range sessions. My 2" LCR shot it very well but my 3" SP101 shot it even better. My Henry Big Boy was extremely accurate with he HST at 100 yds.
I don't think that I've ever seen the HST fail in any caliber. I've been wanting some for the 45 acp for ages but finding HSTs in standard pressure loads is like finding a squach in the back yard. I can find the +P rated ammo on line pretty easy but because my pistol has an aluminum alloy frame it's not rated for +P loads. I might break down and get a couple boxes of the +P loads. I don't think that a mag full will hurt the pistol anyway, just like a cylinder full of +P rounds won't hurt a standard pressure 38 Special pistol. Most gun manufacturers build their products to handle a few higher pressure rounds because they know that some of the people that own their guns will probably shoot a few hot rounds through them. And since my life is priceless, I'll take the risk.
SGAmmo has it in stock right now. Its $40 a box but they have it. Its 50 round boxes though. I know I have a bit of it at home in standard pressure and +P. Should have bought even more when I got it last. I paid $25 per box of 50 at a gun show. He only had maybe 10 boxes of each and I bought a couple of each from him then. I have some I bought elsewhere too but that was the last time I bought any.
Looks like a very good load. I eas guesstimating it would get around 1300 fps. I have been interested in an LCR in 327 for a couple of years, mostly because of your tests. I wouldn't mind the 3" 38 either, and i would love a 3" Kimber K6 (you see the pattern there?). How about a couple of comparison tests? Maybe the 327 vs a 357 snubby (you could even try the Win USA 110 gr load, for a baseline). Maybe try a compact 9mm with good ammo, HST or Gold Dot. But focus on revolvers a bit. Appreciate all your tests.
I just obtained a sp-101 3" in 327 in excellent condition from GB. I was chrono graphing this round yesterday. Ave. was 1387 fps, 455 ft lbs, and rang 1415 for a high. Kicks pretty good, but shootable all day. After 3 shots in my LCR hand was starting to hurt, and gun was shifting. Going to pull a bullet, and pour out some of the powder to come up with a shootable round for the LCR. Wish you could just buy the bullets. Won't cost any money, just time. I picked up some Leigh 75 grn ESD bullets I'm going to try. I noticed in one of your vids the 95 didn't stabilize out of the LCR. Will let you know if I come up with a good round. The sp-101 is my new "car", "kit" gun with the full bore HST. I did change out the grips for full Hogue's.
The original .327 Federal - nice. I once pulled a Gold Dot .327 and weighed the powder. Looks like 14 gr of Ramshot Enforcer. From what I can tell, that's an ideal powder for .327 Federal Mag.
@@GunSam I going to try some faster powders for the LCR. CFE pistol, Accurate 5,7. Don't have any Ramshot, just Zip. I'm going to pull a bullet, and weigh the powder.

This is such an incredible round. Don’t understand why they don’t create a rimless version. Can you imagine a 1903 with a double stack mag running 15 or 16 rounds of this? That’s the perfect conceal carry auto.
This is my go to ammo. I don't buy jell so I test through 2 layers of 12 oz duck canvas into water jugs and this usually gets to the 4th jug and expands to .55-.60.
Always love seeing when you post a 327 video and a great video as usual and impressive results but nothing more than I see with my Gold Dots so no need for me to consider changing my carry load.
@@GunSam I carry a 3” SP101 and my buddy and I came up with our New England meat target (our take on Paul Harrells meat target we just use a Carhartt barn coat for the outer layer) with Gold Dot I get 1420 fps and about .515-.530 expansion. I did pick up a lot of the Hydra Shoks that dropped recently as a backup load should my Gold Dot inventory run low. Still hoping that Speer may drop some more Gold Dots sooner than later. Thanks again for the videos.
I love my ruger lcf 327 as well, its my most carried gun and id never get rid of it. But in addition to it, I feel like I need an sp101 or maybe even the new taurus in .327 to take full advantage of the caliber. The taurus 327 is comparable in size to the lcr, but since its all steel its 5 ounces heavier. Id like to get the sp101 but they must not make many of them because they are extremely rare. As far as the lcr goes, I think ill stick with the .327 85 grain HST for it. Theres no doubt that this round is way better ballistically. But good shot placement beats good ballistics. And shooting rounds like the gold dot and this one out of the lcr take away half the advantage that a .327 mag has to offer. Yeah, the recoil might be milder than .357 mag, but in a gun as light as the lcr, its not by very much.
Good shooting with a jumping snubby. That recoil would require a good amount of practice beyond other slightly larger firearms like the 365 or the Shield etc.
HST are always impressive in performance. A solid carry load for sure. Looks like it might be time for a pocket holster upgrade. There's a few kydex ones with nice pronounced "hooks" for snagging your pocket so you never draw it with the gun. The Aholster Company Backbone pocket holster has hooks that can grab front or the rear of your pocket. The Vedder Pocket Locker has a hook for the rear of the pocket and an optional thumb shelf to help pop it off as well. Might be worth looking into
A traditional fix for that problem is to wrap a bunch of rubber bands around the bottom of the pocket holster. It sometimes works!............................elsullo
I've been looking for a Ruger in .327, I'd rather have a 1769. It's a unicorn at the gunshows I go to. That said, this does look like a great carry ammo.
I think it would be hard to do, as no matter how you slice it with normal sized cylinders, you can only add 1 extra round. Now if you went a hair bigger than the N frame/Redhawk size revolver cylinder, you probably could pull off 10 chambers, but we also have to realize the normal operating pressure of .327 Federal is 45,000 PSI, so I would imagine gun companies would be hesitant to have chamber walls that narrow. Now, a 9 shot N frame/Redhawk frame I could see as a potential thing.
@@GieszkanneI think your absolutely right. Further the 357 magnum Redhawk is seen as Black Bear medicine where I don't see the 327 being seen the same way.
I know the 9 shot can be done but I say 10 I know it would be huge but I think it could be done and I agree a Ruger redhawk would probably be the gun to do it I think they could do it make it a cylinder like a 500 s&w mag size even it would take off I think
Looked a little too hot, even for you. I like the idea of the 327, but would probably run the 32 H&R Magnum. That 7 shot 3" Charter Arm Professional has been talking dirty to me lately. 🤔
@GunSam What does your sight picture look like when you shoot the LCR? I have a couple of Ruger LCR's and they both shoot about 3" low at 7 yards if I acquire a standard sight picture. Massad Ayoob reviewed an LCR and said the same thing. To correct for this, I use a nonstandard sight picture where the bottom of the white stripe on the front sight is at the same level as the top of the rear sights. Do you do that too? Or do you use a standard sight picture (top of front sight level with top of rear sights)?
I probably use a standard sight picture, if I can recall. But discussing sights or accuracy in this video, not really something I want to do. I normally shoot this gun great, so the ONE video where I didn't shoot it well is not something I want to get into.
I follow your explorations of the 327 fed mag with great interest. Thank you. Keep it up. Now that it has been shown that you can load the 30SC hot to achieve the same energy as the 327 fed mag out of a short barrel, why not have a look at that? 16+1 is a LOT more than 6. ;-)
Sam, I think the accuracy is you being new on this gun and this ammo on this day. I have been shooting full up .327 for a number of years now in a S&W J frame 3" and can tell you things improve with practice. Even for an average shooter like me.

I at the same time got a Single 7, it shoots sweet too.
I also picked up a Henry .22 and a Ruger Wrangler because, why not.
Another great video, thanks.
Thank you
Impressive video. Zero BS nonsense. You are very articulate providing a lot of technical detail.
Thanks to your video? I purchased one, changed grips, and purchased an Alabama hoster.
Lot of things going for that 6-shot LCR, including at least two other cartridges that are viable with the right bullets.
it's versatile. The .327 Federal is as powerful as a typical 125 gr .357 Mag from a snub, yet the .32 Long has half the recoil of a .38 Special.
@@GunSam If I recall, you felt the Magtech SJHP in that .32 S&W L was decent.
I've watched lots of your videos where penetration is deeper into the gel with the denim and MDF. It surprises me every time because I intuitively expect it to penetrate less when going through the extra two items.
The diameter of the bullet is usually smaller after hitting denim and MDF, so there's no shock less diameter goes deeper on the same energy.
Thanks for the demonstration.
I just sold my S&W UC revolvers and bought an LCR in 327 Fed Mag. That little cartridge is no joke.
Had Ruger continued to make a 327 magnum Sp101 they would have a perfect competitor to both the Colt Detective and the Kimber. Then again I wish Smith could have made an affordable J frame
I didn't realize they didn't make them anymore.
@@GunSam I didn't see it in their catalog.
@@ftdefiance1 Would be a shame. From what I understand, the use of the 3" Ruger SP101 was the very gun that Federal used to create the cartridge around.
Still in catalog, but "Currently Unavailable".
They are still all over the place online. They never stopped making them. Taurus has now joined the .327 game.
Love my 327, for me it's the perfect choice between38 +p and 357 mag. Great shooting! God bless!
Great test. I just purchased 6 boxes of this for my Ruger 327. I'll go to the range check it out, get used to it and if everything goes ok, swap it out for the Underwood Extreme Defender as my carry ammo.
Thank you for the information, I just ordered two boxes. Thanks again!!
Woohoo!!
LOVE THIS STUFF!!!
I still have some old 115g stuff
I have heard about it. By now, hearing about 115 gr Gold Dot is like hearing about the mythical Black Talon .357 Mag.
@@GunSam I have some of that too! 😝😋👍🏼
@@cw2a I got a box about half full of the SXT 180 gr black HP circa about 1993.
The clearest clear gel I’ve seen. 32 H&R Magnum HST would be nice.
Velocity does seem to solve a lot of things.
Look like a really good carry load.
I now have a caliber to check out. Thanks
Devastating! I LOVE it! Those have really similar muzzle energy to the Gold Dots, and a bit more penetration too!
Thanks for watching. If you get a chance to run them in organic gel, i'd love to see the results. It's unlikely beyond you and I, that anyone will test these in all of TH-cam.
A fav weapon with my fav caliber!~ Great test with favorable results. Superb job Sam.
👍😊 a sub nose with power rounds are a hand-full of recoil . I like the round nice shooting.
Recoil isn't too bad. Not like a magnum of any kind, more like shooting a subcompact .40 caliber.
Mag.. :)
Now if I could find some.. Try the ammo with the stock grip... see if it helps... I think it will. HST is the Gold Standard ammo... IMO
Good video! I always appreciate your presentations. The .327 mag is a great carry gun for self defense!
Dang it ! Now I am looking for a revolver in .327
I didn’t know you could get a HENRY REPEATING ARMS BIG BOY BRASS .327 FEDERAL 20-INCH 10RDS !
@@GlennJudah really or are ya joking?
Oh you’re talking about the rifle, I thought you meant the new revolvers! 😳 Lol 😆
@@michigunsanta8680 haha definitely the rifle
@TexasRoadWarrior Lipseys is producing a blued 3” Ruger SP101 in .327 with upgraded sights. They have them at GrabAGun.
Finally some decent ammo for .327, luckily I stocked up before ‘20, but still would be nice to be able to grab some boxes whenever I want.
Im considering the .327 round and the Ruger LCR specifically, thank you for this vid.
Great ammo review/choice Sam.!
Thank you
Thanks... this begs for a new video, Gold Dot .327 vs HST .327
Slo mo camera is really nice. .327 mag is the way to go. I'm ordering one.
I carry my 327 with Underwood Extreme Defender 95 grain. Love this gun
Thanks!, Been watching your channel for a while, cool to see your progress, learned a lot from your channel. Get a Alabama pocket holster for your LCR. Got a couple from them and they work way better than the desantes in my opinion.
Thanks a lot. My Desantis works well, it's just my TH-cam filming pants are not my normal pants. I got a lot of comments about it so I pinned a comment with a quick vid I did.
My first reaction seeing the grips is they look too round?
Just a wild guess, you are way above me!
Great video, as usual! 👍👍
I've been very satisfied with my Ruger LCRx .357 snubby. Very light and versatile. Any night sight upgrade recommendations for it @GunSam? Thanks for all your hard work for your presentations. Nice to have the variety and serious content vs. all the industry hot air on other channels.
Now we know the "Paul Harvey" on the "Would it Fire' video!!!
Always love seeing when you post a 327 video and a great video as usual and impressive results but nothing more than I see with my Gold Dots so no need for me to consider changing my carry load.
When I tested Gold Dot I did get something like .45" expanded diameter. The HST does seem to make a greater cut.
Awesome round! Makes me want to buy a lcrx in .327 wish it was more common
Nice pocket holster! I like to use Aliengear for my G43x. Pocket holsters are so comfortable
Awesome cool shirt I love the lcr carry both 357 and 9 mm.
Very Cool, you are like a kid on Christmas morning.
I've been looking for a Ruger in .327, I'd rather have a 1769. It's a unicorn at the gunshows I go to. That said, this does look like a great carry ammo.
In case you are concerned with BIAS on your caliber, I agree that looks good in the Gel.
They Should make a 10 shot revolver in 327 fed Magnum Ruger should
I think it would be hard to do, as no matter how you slice it with normal sized cylinders, you can only add 1 extra round.
The Redhawk with 8 shot .357 might only fit 9 shot of 327. And the Redhawk already is a huge and heavy revolver.
Thanks Gun Sam. I'm so impressed I just ordered 200 rounds to feed MY LCR snubby!
Looked a little too hot, even for you. I like the idea of the 327, but would probably run the 32 H&R Magnum. That 7 shot 3" Charter Arm Professional has been talking dirty to me lately. 🤔
I like that .327 mag ctg myself !
I’m still at this point thinking I should pick one up !
Ruger should make lcrx in .327 fed mag with a 3-inch barrel, it would make a great kit gun.
I follow your explorations of the 327 fed mag with great interest. Thank you. Keep it up. Now that it has been shown that you can load the 30SC hot to achieve the same energy as the 327 fed mag out of a short barrel, why not have a look at that? 16+1 is a LOT more than 6. ;-)

I cant wait til they actually release the 357 magnum HST. They announced it a while ago but its still not available anywhere.
Sam, I think the accuracy is you being new on this gun and this ammo on this day. I have been shooting full up .327 for a number of years now in a S&W J frame 3" and can tell you things improve with practice. Even for an average shooter like me.
Carrying and shooting the same revolver for 5 years is not, being new on a gun. Not sure where you came up with that one.
@@GunSam It seems I miss-understood your remarks about not shooting the .327 loads much for some time.
Try a Mika’s pocket holster. It won’t come out with your gun like yours did.
