Clay cliffs near Omarama. Also if you are driving through the beautiful Waitaki Valley (the inland road from Omarama - to just south of Oamaru) there is some very old Maori drawings on a cliff on the roadside not far past the township of Kurow. I have lived in the Sth Island of New Zealand all of my life and only just discovered these places last Autumn.

Hi! I’ll add a short overview of the first days we had on NZ below. First I just wanted to say that the drive to Milford Sound is really long. If you still wanna see it in 5 days, I suggest flying there from Queenstown in a helicopter. A friend of me did this to save time, and said it was well worth it.
      Day 1:
We landed in Christchurch and spent the first day stocking up on food and adapting to the time zone. We drove to Lake Tekapo Holiday Park and spent our first night there.
      Day 2:
Enjoyed a beautiful sunrise at Lake Tekapo, drove west to see Lake Pukaki and Peter's Lookout (the famous photo spot to take picture of the road leading to Mount Cook). Looking back at this, I wish we continued to Mount Cook village to do the Hooker Valley track, as this is at the end of a dead end road and we "wasted" time driving all the way back to do this hike on a later occasion. Then we drove to Clay Cliffs, a wonderful location with no crowds. At the end of that day we found a campsite in Wanaka where we spent the night.
      Day 3:
Waking up early to photograph the famous Wanaka Tree, it was crowded already at 5:30 am. Then we headed over to Roys Peak and did this amazing hike. At the peak you have a panoramic view of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding nature. A steep and long hike, but so worth it! Remember to bring snacks and water as you'll get tired. In the evening we drove to Queenstown and enjoyed the Ferg Burger, which is a must do in Queenstown!
      Day 4:
We spent the morning and early afternoon in Queenstown riding the Shotover Jet, a thrilling experience in the narrow river nearby Queenstown with adrenaline guaranteed and stunning surroundings which you won't see if you don't ride the jetboat. Then we headed over to the cable car taking you up to the "roof" of Queenstown, giving stunning views of the city beneath and also being the place you ride the iconic "Luge" which is a Mario Kart-like gokart you drive in a fun slope. We spent rest of the day driving towards Te Anau as the drive towards Milford Sound is too long to make in a day.
      Day 5:
Having a coffee in Te Anau before the scenic drive towards Milford Sound continued. Be sure to stop along the way there, as there is plenty of sights to see. Mirror Lake is pretty on a still day and you'll also likely see the famous Kea parrots along the way. Don't feed them! :) We spent the afternoon/evening strolling around Milford Sound and having a nice dinner. Be sure to check out the famous rope swing which is located by the waterfront in the bay.
      Day 6:
Cruising out in the fjords seeing the amazing sound from the water. Amazing waterfalls, vertical mountains and sea lions was some of the sights we got to see. I recommend doing this trip on a small boat so the experience is more authentic and less people to fight for the best spots onboard the boat.
Hope this was helpful! Have a nice trip :)

You should check the video tour of the camper van on my channel, I talk about it in that video. Basically we made sure to charge up when we were connected on a camp site. We had a 20.000mAh power bank and used a 12V to usb converter to juice up as we were driving :) Our cameras battery life is really good, that helped out a lot.

Norway is beautiful too, but which do you think is prettier vs NZ?

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It’s such a hard question to be honest. I think for a neutral part, Norway has more extreme and varied places to see. But since I’m kinda «used to» the beauty of Norway, I really fell in love with NZ. The tropical parts of NZ is something you won’t find in Norway though!

Between April 21st and May 5th! They were not busy during that time, but I guess November is more busy. Can’t say for sure tho. We never had problems getting a spot late in the evening. It’s smart to call the campground earlier to get it confirmed :)
