I am working on my first zine and I was going to call it “I can’t draw animals” with my bad drawings of animals. Meant to also be fun, but after watching this what would I call it? 🤷🏻♀️
I like your zine idea! I didn’t mean it so literally when I said don’t call your art “bad” .. what I meant here is when you call your art bad as an excuse to not go “all in” with your work. I think accepting your art where it’s at, exploring, and being open is all good but once it goes into self deprecating territory as a shield from criticism is when we halt growth. I even have a video called “make bad zines” bc making bad art is liberating!! But that doesn’t mean you’re a “bad artist” I really hope this all makes sense haha but your zine idea is very cute, fun, and honest. If you think it’s you being too hard on yourself though, maybe you could just call it “my animals” and fully accept it’s not perfect. Love it anyway, despite being drawn “badly” bc maybe not everyone who sees it will think it’s bad you know? ♥️♥️ Thanks for watching and have fun creating your zine!! x
i see that keffiyeh! so many folks on here posting with 0 acknowledgement of what's happening , like it's business as usual has me deflated. so happy to see yours and excited for this video!
I agree - it’s really disappointing that some people choose to turn a blind eye ✊🏽🇵🇸 I want everyone to know I stand in solidarity with Palestine and will continue to do my part in educating myself and boycotting. It’s the least we can do!
I love this video and the Keffiyeh! Instantly subscribed! I’m also in my 30s (32), neurodivergent and my childhood dreams even to this day are to be an author and an artist. Lost myself along the way and I really want to get back into my creative bag and make a living being myself and doing what I love. I just have to find out what type of art I’m into and my style and get the creative spark and inspiration back. Thank you ❤
I’m so glad you were drawn to my video and enjoyed it. I’m rooting for you in 2024 - great things take time and I’m excited for you to get back into your creative bag. Happy new year!! ✊🏽🇵🇸 🎊🫂❤️❤️❤️
My family told me artists don't make money til they are dead. I stopped making art when life got overwhelming after dropping out of college and having to work 2 jobs at a time. and throughout these last couple if years I started doing art once every few months and I have been more or less consistent practicing and creating the last couple of months. I've been so happy to get back into it at my big age (32). I had a single mother and 3 siblings, my desires to do extra curriculars were unimportant compared to my brothers sports and such 🙃
I love this video! as a 24 year old artist, content creator and recent college graduate myself, 2023 has been the toughest on me mentally. because of the loss of structure that school gave me, I now find myself lost and stuck in my head with so much anxiety and being super self-critical of my processes, posting, art, money, and caring for myself. I've been in therapy for a long time, but it has also taken me years to realize that it really is about changing your mindset to be more positive, retraining your brain, and adjusting to the always changing person you are. im not the same person I was in school, I am now a FULL TIME artist and its hard. Im currently trying to unlearn all of my past trauma too and be my confident loving self I know I am! it will just take time. luckily we have artists/content creators like you to look up to! thanks for making this vid, ive been following you on Tiktok for a long time!! I don't usually comment either - but another goal is to be more social on social media so here I am lol
Congrats on being able to do art full time! It’s no easy task, but worth it imo…I am so grateful for your support. Hearing what you’ve had to say here really touches me…I’m glad to that you’re so open to change and unlearning. It’s so tough but I think it’s brave that you’re facing these things head on. Best of luck in the new year!! You’re doing amazing ❤️
Currently 25 and 3ish months into creating and selling my art as a side business while I work my full time nonprofit design/marketing job, and this video was everything I needed to hear. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom Bre, myself and I'm sure SO MANY others really look up to you and your work. I just admire your abundance mindset so much! As you talk about so often there is a ton of gatekeeping in the art world, and sharing your experiences/knowledge in hopes it can help encourage others is such a generous thing to do.
Thank you so much for watching and always leaving comments across platforms! I remember you leaving a comment on Instagram around the holidays about how special it is when someone buys your work and that was so relatable 😭♥️ Ain’t no shame in working a 9-5 while doing art on the side, I feel like as long as you still make time for art that’s what really matters! The stability of a job probably relieves so much stress financially too. The fact you make time for art as a side business is so admirable bc so many people don’t even make time for it at all…keep going ♥️♥️
YES to lists! As a "scatterbrained eccentric artist" (cough-neurodivergent-cough) my agenda is crucial for me to remember everything. Every week has a long Post-It with everything I need to do during the week, the appointments/meetings/plans get written in immediately, and then I make the rest of my to-do list every morning so I can adjust it to my spoons level. GAME. CHANGER. Also, I'm sorry your dad discouraged you. I had a slightly different experience -- my dad always agreed I could make it as a writer, but he was very vocal that a creative career was self-indulgent and cringey and I should aim higher. (I blame his own generational trauma for this -- he could have been a tremendous photographer or visual artist if his parents hadn't forced him into -- I kid you not -- ACCOUNTING.) My mom just cared about whether I could pay my bills and kept my all newspaper clippings in a scrapbook when I started freelancing as a teen :') Guess which parent I'm still close with xD
Lists ftw!! It’s such a simple thing but life changing 😭🙏🏽 We are breaking generational curses, that’s for sure! ❤️ I guess I can see that our parents concerns do come from a place of love. Thank you for sharing your story and thoughts - so sweet that your mom was a big supporter of your work! Not many people have that and that’s so special. Happy holidays and new year! ✨🥂
Bre, speaking as a fellow neurodivergent artist, thank you for this video. I had a burnout experience in 2020 that made me lose 3+ years of my creative life and I almost quit art a few times. I’m picking up the pieces and slowly getting into a creative state that feels more natural to me. Learning I’m autistic also helped me A LOT. 2023 was a turning point for me and 2024 will be the year I really rebuild myself as an artist, and as a person. I needed this video so badly! Thank you!!! ❤
The self sabotage is so real, Ive made multiple art accounts only to private them over and over again. Really funny how simply letting your art breathe and exist is a challenge on its own. But for now it’s still a step in the right direction, hope we can all find creative fulfillment in time! Love your videos btw! ✨
It is so obvious you have a creative writing background by how beautifully you speak and motivate us complete strangers! Here's hoping that all of us have a wonderfully creative and successful 2024!!
I love that you revealed that there was a time that you had to give up on your dream. It’s sad that it happened, but it happened to me by feeling like I couldn’t pay my bills with it. Now I recently graduated from college and I’m chasing my dreams. We outlasted our doubt and I think it’s important to realize personal doubt is our biggest hurdle but we should realize it’s a lie. Yes the criticism of work is real but it’s your passion, you were made to follow your dreams. Our systems won’t always be like this.
I would say when ur about to start balling bc u hate ur art is to just, skip and start drawing other stuff.👯♀️ Literally ignore it until the sketchbook is finished
My self deprecation really is holding me back. Its crazy because there’s so many times where I don’t “feel” like an artist or a creative because I’m not good enough…or I feel idk inadequate. But I relate so much to you and how you felt and how you always made time for art in some way.
Thank you for sharing your story! I turned 26 a couple of days ago and I feel energized to restart my art journey again! There must be something about being 26 lol! It was inspiring to hear that it might take time to build, but it is definitely worth the effort!!
BRE!! OMG!! As a 50-something who also gave up art for a while, I just want to say that you are wise beyond your years and THANK YOU. I finally made my first zine and am finally embarking on my own solo art career. Thank you, thank you.
Heck yeah keep makin those zines and I’m wishing you all the best on your solo art career!! You got this 😎♥️ thank you so much for listening to what I had to say here, it means the world to me
🥹 I’m going to be 26 in February, still struggling through getting my AA, and been trying to push myself to pursue and share my writing/art for the last decade. Thank you for sharing your story, I’m trying so so hard to let go of the feeling of being “too old” or “not good enough” ! You inspire me so so much, next year will def be my year to be an artist *I’m* proud to be ❤
I watched this video when it came out, but I regularly have to think of it and wanted to leave a comment, so here I am re-watching it!! It just meant a lot hearing this. Art always seemed like hopeless road down and ending up as a starving artist, and I didn't even notice it, just due to how it is seen by other people, especially family, who wants the best for one. Why I hesitate. But hearing this just gave me hope and showed me this clear point of view, that it can be different, which I always wanted but didn't manage to find! Thanky! Overall, I am happy whenever I see you upload and it gives me just so much joy and motivation! You just have such a great energy.
I recently found your channel and this video has given me the push I needed to start making my zines and posting my art. I'm 28 and I deserve to take my leap of faith.
you're so cute subscribing immediately i appreciate ur words sm you have no idea. i feel like at 22 i've already given up on the idea that i can pursue my dreams and succeed and i've found peace within that (it's taken a while) but seeing people who still went against all odds bc of their passion still moves me to tears and i'm so proud of you for that. i think i'm okay with art just being a hobby on the side whilst i work my way up to having a corporate job like everyone else (to further support said hobbies on the side), but this video was just so refreshing to see in such desperate times rn sdjndsjnks i can't explain it but your story is like a ray of sunshine on a gloomy day. gonna go binge the rest of your videos, i rly love this style of sitting down and talking to the camera like we're friends it's so comforting! happy new year and i hope you grow and find even more peace and stability within your art career in 2024!
Your comment is so sweet and encouraging! I fully support you working a job to fund your hobbies - I did that for so long and there’s so much fulfillment in that. I hope you continue creating in 2024 and remember that your art is important…someone out there will relate to it and I think that’s what the art community is all about…connecting with others 🤗 Sooo excited that you enjoyed this video and can’t wait to post more in the coming months. Happy new year and holidays!! x
I love this mindset. thank you for sharing your story. it's hard being a creative sometimes. people who don't understand creatives will discourage you sometimes, but it's important to always remember you're awesome and art is a real career path ✨
I resonate so much with your story. Got back into art after an 8 year hiatus and am just now starting to post my work more. Your perspective and reflection are so refreshing! I’m inspired 🧡
I’m happy that after 8 years, you returned to your calling for your work!! Thank you so much for sharing that with me - it’s so nice to connect with others who can relate to the creative journey and all it’s struggles. Wishing you the best & happy new year 🖤🖤
I'm turning 31 this month and I'm only now allowing myself to be the person/artist that I've always wanted to be. I've never allowed myself to actually create things even though I really wanted to. I would always tell myself I wasn't good enough, so much so that I became too afraid of trying. Luckily, with a lot of therapy and healing through journaling and doing things like yoga/meditation/finding God, I'm breaking out of that lack mindset and allowing myself to be who I really am. I'm looking into people like Bre and I'm drawing and sharing the things I make, which is HUGE for me. I'm so excited to see what I can do moving forward and I'm so happy to say that I now have the belief in myself that I've always wanted. This was very helpful and inspirational for me. Thank you so much for sharing your story! And good luck to everyone with similar stories. Let's build ourselves up as well as one another! We got this! Happy New Year!
Absolutely beautiful story, thank you for sharing. So many people will be able to relate to this and gain inspiration from you!! I also found spirituality and did a lot of shadow work/healing to be able to break free from the expectations of others. It’s so liberating being unapologetically YOU 🖤🖤 Much love to you in the new year and thank you so much for watching!! X
ohmygosh this came at the right time!!!! i'm so ready to start my zine business but i need more guidance. tysm bre for your amazing content always xoxo
Such a helpful perspective and so relatable. I also grew up with money always tight. I wanted to be an architect or anthropologist or writer, but my mom told me it’s too difficult to find jobs doing those. I sometimes wonder what my life would be if I’d followed my gut instincts instead of being persuaded to go the safe route. I’m pretty miserable with my current life choices. Now I’m trying to re-invent myself at 30.
I don’t think it’s too late for you to start following your instinct.. you can start new now. You got this 🫂🖤 best of luck in the new year x Thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing your journey. So much of our experience is due to our mindset. I've really been enjoying your videos and I've been making zines for the last few months - thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you so much for watching :) I always look forward to your comments, I’m glad you’ve been making zines and hope you continue in 2024!! Happy New Year ❤️❤️
This video was so beautiful, thank you for it! Life has been hard for me, because of my head, I made 20 years this month and since I was 19, I was already thinking it was over for me, because I kept thinking I wasn't good enough to do any of the art I dream of, especially singing. It's very hard to grow in the art community, to be able to live only with that and with my disbelief, living became unbereable to me. I've been changing since June of this year, trying to do things without thinking too much and all of the advice you gave are on point, journaling made me realize that even though I have no sucess with anything yet, being me it's good, just existing it's already something good and I've been trying to be more, so I don't have to be so hard on myself and sad all the time. Everytime I see a story like yours, it fills me with hope, it makes me remember that age doesn't really matter to find ourselvess and chase dreams.
This vid felt so personal to me, not so much because I have the negative mindset but because I've been trying to stay positive about my art and practice positive manifestation and I feel like it has been really working out for me! Inspired by your videos I created my own zine publishing brand called Recesz that allows artists from my high school to share their art with others in the form of zines. This project has been bringing nothing but joy to my life and I'm glad to be working with so many talented people, so you inspired me to inspire other people to make zines and that's pretty cool, isn't it? (Also I started creating lists recently and I feel like they help me to stay more organised and I generally love making lists so ye would recommend 10/10)
Wow, congratulations on creating something that not only lights you up…but allows others to express themselves, too! That’s incredible and you’re helping so many people ❤️ I’m honored my content could be part of your zine journey - thank you for watching! Happy new year :)
I was too nervous to start my art business because I thought I was too old to do that - and I have the same back story😂. Sounds like I need to thrust myself more.😂❤ Thank you for sharing.❤🍉
a collaborative zine im working on has final submissions due new years eve, so my new years resolution is to stop putting things off and letting my perfectionism get the best of me like i did this year. and hopefully get my submission in on time LOL
We have similar resolutions 😆🙏🏽 it’s so hard to stop putting things off but we got this in 2024!! i have my fingers crossed you get that submission in (but I have a feeling you will :)
Bre, thank you so much for this. I'm working my way through The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron right now and so much of what you are saying here resonates with what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm hoping to transition from corporate work to a career as a poet and artist in the coming year. Wish me luck. And I wish you all the best in the coming year. Cheers!
Oooo I still need to read that one! I read the intro and got carried away with other books but hear such wonderful things about the Artist Way! I’m happy you liked this video…keep going and happy new year 🎊🥂
Aww thanks! Glad you liked this video :) At 24:05 I’m using an app called Notion - it’s a productivity and note taking site that you can customize!! I use it for everything, it’s really convenient for scheduling and organizing my day ^_^ www.notion.so
This is very inspiring thank you! I don't have new year resolutions, nor tricks for positive mindset, but I have some questions on zines. Especially on the ethical rules of zines exchanges. I wonder, if I buy a zine from an artist, then can I sell that zine again? Can I swap it in exchange for another zine? Can I make copies of it and exchange them for other zines? (I can already guess I can't sell copies, but maybe exchange is accepted?). Can I buy multiple copies and then resell or exchange them? Also, concerning the things among these that are not allowed, is there a way for zine authors to check that their zine is not being illegally sold, copied or exchanged?. I do not plan making all of this, I was just wondering how all of this works, since I guess there are not official zine written rules. If you think that these questions are worth discussing, I hope you will consider making a video about it (or maybe a zine).
I treat zines the same way I treat literature/books I buy from the store. Personally I think it’s ok to buy a zine, then give it away as a gift or exchange…but I would never resell someone else’s work unless they gave me permission. The only time I allow someone to purchase my zines and then resell them is if they are buying wholesale from me as a registered and legit business. So other small businesses with their own Brick and Mortar shops often resell my zines and that’s the only instance I allow that. Since zines are DIY I think the line gets blurred on what’s allowed but I assume anyone’s zine is their own intellectual property so I also never make copies of their work to distribute unless they say that’s ok! But like I said, gifting and trading zines is always ok with me! I buy zines from all over the world and often gift them, trade them for other zines, and give them away for free ❤️ Honestly, treat others zines the way you’d want yours to be treated. If you don’t want someone to make copies and distribute your zine, don’t do that to others, etc. and as a general rule of thumb it’s always encouraged to speak to the zine maker directly and ask them what they prefer. Thanks for watching and hope you have a wonderful holiday season! Happy new year 🎊🎆✨🥂
@@brattyxbre Oh wow, thank you for this very complete and clear explanation! It makes sense. I haven't had my hands on many zines yet, but I'll keep your advice in mind when the need will show up. Happy holidays to you as well!
Would you say, in your opinion, that there are talent predispositions that make someone more "talented" at art? Or is it just 100% a matter of acquiring skills? I have that mindset that i love art, to draw, to write, and create, but i dont have the skill/talent. So im in dillema now 😢 I hope you will see this!!
I think anyone can be an artist regardless of skill (corny answers, but it’s true!) And sure someone may pick it up way easier and faster than others, but I don’t think that means you can’t also learn those skills too. I personally think of it like sports. Some people are natural born athletes and will dominate no matter what. But then there are people that practice, train, and work their way up to that level. Both athletes are still incredibly talented, but they just started at different places in terms of skill. One was naturally skillful, the other had to acquire the skills…and both are still considered athletes just like two different skilled artists are still artists. I hope that makes sense? If you’re concerned about skill for real, that can always be improved upon over time just like an athlete puts in time at practice. You just gotta keep at it and try not to compare yourself to anyone else :) I know it’s hard not to be discouraged at first, but if you just keep trying I know you’ll surprise yourself. I used to take art classes bc I wanted to draw so bad but felt like I didn’t have the talent to. After years of not giving up I was shocked to learn that everything takes time to develop and “get good at” … even art! ❤️❤️
you have been the most encouraging artist ive come across. I started making a zine because of you and I am soooo happy about it! Finally feel the spark coming back after a lot of surpressed creativity🥹 thank you!
I am working on my first zine and I was going to call it “I can’t draw animals” with my bad drawings of animals. Meant to also be fun, but after watching this what would I call it? 🤷🏻♀️

🥰♥️♥️
I recently found your channel and this video has given me the push I needed to start making my zines and posting my art. I'm 28 and I deserve to take my leap of faith.
🫂❤️
you're so cute subscribing immediately i appreciate ur words sm you have no idea. i feel like at 22 i've already given up on the idea that i can pursue my dreams and succeed and i've found peace within that (it's taken a while) but seeing people who still went against all odds bc of their passion still moves me to tears and i'm so proud of you for that. i think i'm okay with art just being a hobby on the side whilst i work my way up to having a corporate job like everyone else (to further support said hobbies on the side), but this video was just so refreshing to see in such desperate times rn sdjndsjnks i can't explain it but your story is like a ray of sunshine on a gloomy day. gonna go binge the rest of your videos, i rly love this style of sitting down and talking to the camera like we're friends it's so comforting! happy new year and i hope you grow and find even more peace and stability within your art career in 2024!
Your comment is so sweet and encouraging! I fully support you working a job to fund your hobbies - I did that for so long and there’s so much fulfillment in that. I hope you continue creating in 2024 and remember that your art is important…someone out there will relate to it and I think that’s what the art community is all about…connecting with others 🤗
Sooo excited that you enjoyed this video and can’t wait to post more in the coming months.
It’s so liberating being unapologetically YOU 🖤🖤
Much love to you in the new year and thank you so much for watching!! X
I'm so tired of talking down to my art, but i always thought it would be impossible to change. But this really makes me want to try! :)
Thank you for speaking to me 😭😭😭💖 i wish all artists a very self love and trust and success!!!!!
U slayed the kuffye! Great vid too teehee
I'm excited about this!!! Bring on the positive life change!
That’s the spirit!!! 🙏🏽✨
ohmygosh this came at the right time!!!! i'm so ready to start my zine business but i need more guidance. tysm bre for your amazing content always xoxo
You got this! 2024 will be your year, I can feel it ❤️❤️❤️
good luck, you're taking a really exciting step! as bre said, you got this in the bag ‼️
Parental wounds. I feel ya.
I knew I felt a good vibe about you! Bless up!
😊🖤🖤 happy new year!
Yes to owning your growth and encouraging others to do the same!
Notification ON!
See you Sunday! 🥰
Yess, this video just validated my daily life ❤
🤗❤️

Such a helpful perspective and so relatable. I also grew up with money always tight. I wanted to be an architect or anthropologist or writer, but my mom told me it’s too difficult to find jobs doing those. I sometimes wonder what my life would be if I’d followed my gut instincts instead of being persuaded to go the safe route. I’m pretty miserable with my current life choices. Now I’m trying to re-invent myself at 30.
I don’t think it’s too late for you to start following your instinct.. you can start new now. You got this 🫂🖤 best of luck in the new year x Thank you for watching!

Love the Kufiya ❤🎉

Your artist origin story was very inspiring! Hopefully someday I can be a successful artist like you!
You can do it ❤️❤️❤️
"stop being such a lil scaredy azz b*tch" hahahaha, amazing. ;-; so true. this is good stuff. tanks for sharing!! eep!
Thank you for sharing your journey. So much of our experience is due to our mindset. I've really been enjoying your videos and I've been making zines for the last few months - thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you so much for watching :)
I always look forward to your comments, I’m glad you’ve been making zines and hope you continue in 2024!!
Happy New Year ❤️❤️
@@brattyxbre I have several zine ideas I'm working on. BTW, I linked to this video from the Facebook page for my writing collective.

The Blueprint 💐💐💐
excell with all forms of beauty
thank you for this video!! what wonderful advice and so nice to hear you be vulnerable about your ~artist origin story~ too
🫂💕
15:48 i like how i temporarily hate my art but then i know i can fix it 🗿
I love that energy!
Sounds like I need to thrust myself more.😂❤
Thank you for sharing.❤🍉
Never too old ❤️❤️❤️
thanks for watching!
grateful for this video :,)
a collaborative zine im working on has final submissions due new years eve, so my new years resolution is to stop putting things off and letting my perfectionism get the best of me like i did this year. and hopefully get my submission in on time LOL
We have similar resolutions 😆🙏🏽 it’s so hard to stop putting things off but we got this in 2024!! i have my fingers crossed you get that submission in (but I have a feeling you will :)
@@brattyxbre we got this yea! thanks for the encouragement :)
You’re so welcome, friend!
I’m happy you liked this video…keep going and happy new year 🎊🥂
Hi this video DEFINITELY speaks to me 😂 called out
Great video, It really got me inspired uwu
idk if anyone else's asked this already but what app/website are you using on 24:05? It looks so cute TT
Aww thanks! Glad you liked this video :)
At 24:05 I’m using an app called Notion - it’s a productivity and note taking site that you can customize!! I use it for everything, it’s really convenient for scheduling and organizing my day ^_^

😭🖤🖤🖤 thank you!! Wishing you the best holiday season and new year!!
I buy zines from all over the world and often gift them, trade them for other zines, and give them away for free ❤️
Honestly, treat others zines the way you’d want yours to be treated.
So im in dillema now 😢
I hope you will see this!!
You just gotta keep at it and try not to compare yourself to anyone else :)
I know it’s hard not to be discouraged at first, but if you just keep trying I know you’ll surprise yourself. I used to take art classes bc I wanted to draw so bad but felt like I didn’t have the talent to. After years of not giving up I was shocked to learn that everything takes time to develop and “get good at” … even art! ❤️❤️
can you make live stremas of zinee making becuse i wanna make them with someone you know.
Of course! I’ve been trying to find some time to do that, I’m hoping to start in January :)
Ok
oi!
🤗
those comments from your dad are very protective but not true of course. and it makes me sad 😭
🫂❤️❤️
girl im 26,drawing since 3yrl old, i feel like a failure, drowning. i wanna do youtube but i don't believe that anyone will believe in me
That’s why it’s important to work on that mindset ;) Wishing you the best in 2024 ❤️
Thank you for this 🥹
♥️♥️♥️
you have been the most encouraging artist ive come across. I started making a zine because of you and I am soooo happy about it! Finally feel the spark coming back after a lot of surpressed creativity🥹 thank you!
I’m happy about that, too! ♥️♥️
Sending you a lot of love
