  • On Friday, July 28 at 11:04 p.m. ET, Falcon Heavy launched the Hughes JUPITER 3 mission to a geosynchronous transfer orbit from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
This was the third launch and landing of these Falcon Heavy side boosters, which previously supported USSF-44 and USSF-67.

I used Hughesnet for years and when Starlink became available I switched. The improvement in upload and download speeds are nothing short of fantastic. The biggest improvement is the latancy time because Starlink is low earth orbit and Hughesnet is geosynchronous. Also Hughesnet has a cap on data and then it slows down unless you buy more data. Because of the amount of data I was using per month I was spending more per month for Hughesnet than I am for Starlink.

Hughesnet has a satellite on this rocket that was going up I'm hoping it helps my service but if starlink finally becomes available where I'm at, I may switch this will be my first month with hughes.

No reflection on SpaceX and their awesome launch performance... But Hughesnet just paid for a Falcon HEAVY mission with expended center booster to launch an already obsolete satellite! I got by with geostationary Internet for three years, and it is absolutely the Internet of last resort!

Am I a bad person to feel schadenfreude at the fact that SpaceX has completed their first Commercial Crew contract, easily taking on the logistics of supporting the ISS single handed when that was supposed to be the work of two providers, and is now starting their second such contract, while Boeing hasn't even put a crew into the air yet?
The wisdom of the two independent provider philosophy has been amply demonstrated. Its purpose to provide assured access just in case one provider is grounded. Granted, nobody expected a provider to simply not be able to get off the pad, for years, but here we are. Back when the program was first proposed, there were powerful elements in Congress who wanted to just offer a single, non-competitive contract to Boeing. Can you imagine the mess we'd be in if they had had their way?

Song at beginning is "Island Three" by Test Shot Starfish, Shook. Saw this launch pretty clearly from west coast of FL, always awe inspiring show seeing those boosters turn around and come home.
