I grew up in Monticello. What a wonderful safe life back then in the 60’s and 70’s.

Every year or so I have to come back and watch them all again. 8 years ago you sparked a 'severe' interest in the old hotels. I knew I was around the bend when I could name any resort from a pic of the pool or ballroom.

I'm sorry to see that this program was never completed. I'm guessing they lost their funding. There was a full website, which is now gone, and there were evidently interviews with Elaine (Grossinger) Etess and a few other former hotel owners, that were never aired. I think there was also footage from Grossingers and the Concord that was recorded, but never aired. I hope the paper will eventually air this footage someday.

Such lovely architecture. My wife and I love staying in old hotels. You can have the modern metal-and-glass crap.

Beautifully done... I want it back! What is the link between the Catskills’ Institute at Brown University and the Catskills? It’s sort of a long walk...

Barry, I can't understand how this happened to the Catskills. Who ever heard of a vacation destination, especially as popular as the Catskills, just vanish from the face of the earth? Love your videos!

The hard part is that the Borscht Belt faction was a victim of progress, which was necessary as a society. Once Jewish Americans were finally welcomed in all vacation areas, they no longer needed their own space and modern conveniences like A/C and the ability to easily travel across country or across the world in hours made the concept obsolete. I wish a couple of the hotels would've survived, the way the Villa Roma has, but unfortunately it seems like the Jewish population and the others who came up lost all interest in Sullivan County as a vacation spot.

@@RogerBates7 Roger, I’ve heard that before; the three A’s: Air conditioning, Air travel and Assimilation killed the Catskills. It just looked so much fun. One thing we can always count on is change.

@@davidstepeck2644 I feel bad that I was too young to ever visit the hotels while at a least a few of them were still going. I did have the opportunity to spend a few days at the Villa Roma about 20 years ago. While it's not a kosher hotel and it doesn't have the same experience, it does kind of give you the idea of what an all-inclusive, self-contained hotel with their own amenities and activities and the backdrop of the Catskills was like for those that came here.

@@davidstepeck2644 I also have a little artifact that's part of my collection now. My grandparents came up to Grossingers with my father and uncle in the 1960s for dinner, as a guest of my grandfather's boss. I have a Grossinger's dinner menu that they saved as a souvenir. I also have my grandmother's photo albums and I'm trying to see if there's any pictures of them in the dining room. So far I haven't found any...

@@RogerBates7 Thanks for sharing! Some of the remains of the big resorts are still there in the Catskills; you can see them on Google Earth. You can see the pools and remains of buildings. Also, there’s a show called the Marvelous Mrs. Massel about a woman comedian. I never thought I’d be interested, but it’s an excellent show. There are a few episodes when the family goes to the Catskills. It was filmed on location at a real resort. Unfortunately, I think the resort closed shortly after filming.

Lake George and Lake Placid are the most notable of the Adirondack resort towns and Saratoga Springs is the Queen of them all IMO. Catskills is still lovely and like all places and times, they reinvent themselves. I still vacation in the NY mountains and lakes regions every Summer. If you have never been, by all means GO.
