Michael Was NEVER In Witness Protection - You Don't Understand GTA 5's Story

- I've heard this misconception a lot. Many have not put the bits of the story together to understand the bigger picture of what went down between Dave Norton, Michael De Santa, Trevor Philips, Bradley Snider in North Yankton. I am not sure if I will do many GTA 5 lore videos, so I have just thrown this together. Obviously as I speedrun the Grand Theft Auto V, I have played it a bit more than most, and I am honestly not sure how obvious this would be to a casual player.

“Michael doesn’t like unnecessary killing”
Every GTA player: ...
My Michael: 10000 kills
I think it depends on the player, because in the first mission when Michael gets grabbed by the guard after Trevor shoots him he says "you didn't have to do that" but maybe it's just because Dave wanted it to be a clean job idk just speculation lol
👁 👁
👄
@@rockyou5252 and what was said after is another clue that Trevor was supposed to die and that Michael planned this.
Trevor: There'll be time for grieving later.
Michael: Yeah, you got that right.
Call me crazed, but the more moral and/or morally complicated the protagonist, the more good I try to be. Like, I'll try to avoid killing peds, but it's always open season on gang members and police. It doesn't take away fun factor, though.
"Michael isnt a fan of unnecessary killing"

The whole point of Michael helping the FIB in the game is the fact that if Dave gets fired the feds will look up his files and see that Michael is not dead people really didn't paid attention on the game
Pretty much. Honestly GTA 5 is one of the easiest game stories to follow. Nothing about the story is complex nor confusing.
Only explanation that would make sense is if people were skipping cut scenes. Which if you're doing then your doing yourself a disservice.
While GTA 5's story isn't complex or confusing that is far from saying it's poorly written. It's a simple very well written story.
Hell some of the cutscenes became memes.
@@martymcfly8535 100%, GTA V story is the one I had most fun watching of all GTA's, probably one of the most fun stories I ever seen in games
For real.
@@martymcfly8535I think my favourite is our introduction to Ricky, he’s so stereotypical playin air guitar every like 5 minutes, it’s hilarious
Yeah, I'm not sure where the confusion is or how the title is supposed to be some bombshell to realize. Michael was never in witness protection, Dave shot him and convinced him to share the portion of the loot that Michael had on him as a corrupt bribe. The entire reason Michael did Dave's dirty work to help out the FIB was because Dave was covering for faking Michael's death. Dave explicitly makes this clear, pointing out that they would see his files and see Michael didn't die if he gets fired from the FIB. If Michael was just in witness protection, which would also require someone to be a witness *against* to matter, then he wouldn't owe anything to Dave and the FIB at all. This is all beyond the fact that when you are the only one caught from a bank crew who then stay on the lam for decades, who are you being a witness against?
It's wild how much of a sweet guy Trevor actually is, he clearly had so much love for Michael that was never shared and that must hurt him in a huge way
Kinda makes sense to act in the way Trevor did after being betrayed
Sweet isn't the word I'd use for Trevor but i definitely understand where you're coming from
@@youdontneedtoknowthis177 had he not had a abusive childhood and if he was sober more often he probably wouldn’t be such a bad dude
Explain this, then:
Let's say Trevor believes Michael - Mike says he went in blind like everybody else, got shot & arrested and then "took a deal" that got him into Witness Protection and off the hook.
Trevor is not totally stupid: to "take a deal" from the FIB as Michael said would mean he confessed and cooperated with the cops in exchange for a clean new identity and the continued use of his stolen funds (hence how he could afford the mansion).
The game glosses over this plot hole, but Trevor would know that Michael would have been expected to give the FIB evidence against Brad and Trevor, evidence which they used to put Brad in prison (he thinks) and confiscate all of Trevor's loot (while Michael got off scot-free and got to keep his loot).
Why is that a more tolerable outcome than that PLUS having Brad accidentally killed and lying about it? The difference in moral weight seems minimal at that point. Michael literally snitched on them both to the Feds and is now rich and free because of it. It's not like Trevor is indifferent about most forms of treason but draws a clear line at treason resulting in murder...

@@aflores0414 tbf I just thought that was bad voice acting instead of in universe bad voice acting
In the cutscene Michael didn’t even have blood and was holding the part where he was “shot” with no marks at all so he got shot with a blank

@@ButterDog42069 Well what I meant was that it was a blank. I mean he could have also faked being shot too lol
What's also funny about prologue is when Brad gets shot, Michael knows part of the deal was to keep him alive, so he says "He's gonna be fine" but the instant he gets shot he says "ah fuck, I'm gonna fucking bleed out"
Just a thought
Doesn't really make sense. How is Michael supposed to convince everyone he's dead unless he appears to have been shot? I agree that Michael can be a diva but he likely knew he was going to take a "bullet" anyway

They do the same think for Niko in GTA IV but it’s with UL Paper from the IAA. This is not accurate from Trevor's perspective. Trevor thinks Michael snitched on Brad, in order to get off his charges. Trevor is not gullible but he is suggestable to things that are unclear, especially cos he doesn't want to believe Michael would sell him out. If Trevor was as distrusting and paranoid as Michael he would have immediately realised the holes in the story when he realised Lester was not in jail too, and he would have thought about how Brad was already caught and going to be easily convicted for multiple homicide and armed robbery. Trevor is crazy and unstable, yes, but he cares and thinks about the ones closest to him and could never kill michael. He cares about Michael, he cared about Brad when he thought he was in prison, he even cared about Floyd wich can be seen in T's serious reaction when Debra mentions another man.
And Michael helps in killing Trevor if you choose "Kill Trevor". In "Kill Michael" Trevor is mad at Franklin for killing him

Or. He had to improvise
@@Sp00kq I think if he was shot unexpectedly, he would be very distracted by the bullet lodge in his chest.
@@SoundSurf0 Its fake blood, Michael is a fan of movies, so i think thats the case
I think what's most interesting is that the reason Michael tells Trevor that he's gonna bleed out is because I think Michael realized that Trevor could escape. Otherwise, he would have not encouraged Trevor to leave him and instead made him linger long enough for Dave to kill him (as first intended).
So, in a way, Michael saved his ass by making it clear he was going to die and remove any doubt from Trevor's mind in case Trevor actually lives, which I think was a quick decision on Michael's part.
Michael at that point could just close is eyes and fake is death right away, but no, Trevor had to go that was the whole plan so Michael said "I'm gonna fucking bleed out, Jesus..." so that Trevor didn't go anywhere and tried to protect him so that police could finish him off, that's what I think. I don't even know anymore my head is full of fucked up theories, (basically full of shit)
As I’ve only played through the story once, and it was over the course of a month or so, I just took everything on face value and didn’t question anything. After countless hours on gta online and equally same amount creation content for the community, I’ve gradually more and more been impressed with the story, attention to detail and extra Easter eggs etc (tangent story arcs) in the game.
I really enjoyed your story telling here and how it wasn’t scripted. I didn’t even notice the runtime and was drawn into the realisation that Michael wasn’t in fact, in the witness protection program. In hindsight if I did question it, even remotely, the main point would’ve been how well the “townsleys” were living, Amanda had tons of surgery, the kids didn’t go without and Michael clearly had money. In witness protection they no way would’ve had that lifestyle, clearly he had access to the money he “earned” lol. Also, evidently Dave’s character was clearly presented in dirty cop fashion. And Steve, the opportunist boss that found out dirt on his employee and used for his advantage.
Long rant, but greatly appreciated your logical manner of discussion and found that relatable and enjoyable. I’m genuinely excited more for gta vi, after the realisation of how great gtaV is (evident on its stood the test of time). ✌️.. from a content creators perspective do you reckon “gta guru, sounds better than good grief 007) ? 😇
After hearing all of this, it's actually sad to even know that if the player chooses the Kill Trevor or the Kill Michael option, the spared man will not want any dealings with Franklin anymore because you killed their best friend. 💔 (It's very sad on Franklin's end because he was caught into all of their BS when he was just trying to live a better life for himself.)
*It's kind of confusing, because throughout the game both Trevor and Michael were at each other's throats 90% of the time.*
It makes sense. Michael hated Trevor and Trevor was betrayed. But with Option C, they had enough common enemies to set their problems aside and make up.
Makes sense because Trevor despises betrayal above anything, so of course he’d want to cut ties with Franklin. Probably the only reason he doesn’t kill him afterwards is because in this ending he never made up with Michael and so he still hated them, even if he disapproved the way Franklin did the deed.
On the other hand, Michael would feel guilt. Even if he tries to convince himself that it was all Franklin’s fault and uses that to cut ties with him, he does understand how he screwed Trevor over and how his actions had such an impact. Before, he could convince himself that Trevor probably would’ve got himself killed by his own actions without any of his involvement, but now, he knows it was his fault.
TLDR; It makes sense because Trevor would hate Franklin’s lack of loyalty, and Michael would feel guilt.

Imagine that you’re tied up in a basement, GTA 5 doesn’t exist, and your kidnapper starts telling you a story about some guy named Michael.
You don’t know what gta is and you have been held prisoner for 20 years and An angry Australia man with a beard rants about a man named michael.
You dont understand micheal wasn't in witness protection.

For those who didn’t know this but in prologue after Brad dies and Michael “bleeds out” you’re able to shoot Brad‘s dead corpse but not Michael

Suddenly this makes the Kill Michael ending seem a lot less like a bad ending now. He practically is THE hidden bad guy of the story.
He definitely is a bad guy... he murdered people and robbed banks dude
But you lose 1/3 of The Big One payout because it goes to his family. To maximise profits you need to kill Trevor and his cut will be redistributed to Franklin and Michael.
@@gamingwitadrian390 You completely misinterpreted what he said. He said that Michael was THE bad guy in the STORY. No shit Michael is a bad guy. Almost everyone apart of the story in this game was a bad person
I still think C is the best ending despite this, because Michael had at least decent reasons to backstab. Killing Michael feels bad because then even Trevor is upset with Franklin for killing him
@@MickeyX2M and thus he eventually kills Franklin. Worst ending.

Exactly 😂 and Michael convicted Trevor that there was a helicopter on the route they where going and made sure they didn’t deviate. He was then put in witness protection because his death was faked and Trevor was on the loose.
Michael didn’t like killing if he didn’t have to
Me playing as Michael in story mode: 👀😳
GTA4 was similar, there was even a meme about it from years back where it was like Cutscene Niko didn't want to kill anymore, then Gameplay Niko all chaos broke loose lol
Well, aside from trevor (and maybe cloud from gta3) no carathers is this crazy mas murdering psyco.
Popular theory, when the player controls Michael, Michael has no control. Basically, in the Therapy Session, he said "sometimes I dont feel like myself Doc" this supports the theory, as he "doesnt feel like himself" sometimes. And the "sometimes" is when the player is controlling him. This theory has some support, but not alot, but it's fun to think about.
@@SynergyGaming112 that kinda fits with my headcanon for a lot of games. Basically you are playing as God, controlling people and allowing them to accomplish things no normal person could achieve.

11:00 It could have been a bullet without gunpowder, although it doesn't kill, an impact can cause injury, even more so because of the caliber of the weapon he was using, which was a Sniper (It could be .556 or .762). However, without gunpowder in the projectile it does not cause as much problems as if the ammunition had gunpowder.
a sniper would be alot more than 5.56 or 7.62, those are rifle rounds
100 percent more bullet per bullet

Interesting how little franklin matters in the story, even though he's like, ya know, a main character

@@RenegadeShepTheSpacer not really unless you like to play story mode after the game is almost over
I like to believe it's franklin's story. Only that the parts we do as trevor and Michael are told to Franklin when they meet up... Kind of weird i know
I think Michael would have sadly taken his own life after his wife and children left or have given up and kept drinking booze and smoking cigars at least if it wasn't for Franklin being the 'son he always wanted' or sort of like the man who re-ignited the fire in Michael's heart and soul, the love for the criminal lifestyle. Franklin was the reason Michael started heisting again and eventually the reason Michael wanted to live a quiet life. I wouldn't say he didn't matter.
@@drrrivevibes
Oh shit, good point, I stand corrected
Trevor was meant to die, and Michael was meant to fake his death. That’s why Michael lingered around Brad after he fell over. Because he knew he had to be shot.
It’s like, if someone was just shot infront of you, your first reaction would probably be to take cover, which is what Trevor did. But Michael knew he had to get shot, so he remained in the open.
Idk if he was really shot or not, but he was definitely meant to fake his death.
Normally, Michael would quickly drag Brad to cover, but you can see how he's not even picking Brad up, he's just pointing his palm towards him and even looking into the direction of Dave frantically, it was clear he was waiting for the shot
If you replay the prologue mission during the scene where Brad is shot. If you look at Micheal's chest VERY closely you can see where the bullet goes to. It's a small metal spot. Similar to when you wear body armor and get shot in the chest and back in game. Seriously I shit you not. It's on his left hand side, Micheal's left hand side, that is lol
Even without all the technical stuff like where and how the bullet hit Michael, his animated reactions really give away the fact that he wasn't hurt after being shot.
Being shot in the chest with a high calibre Sniper rifle round would cause pain that even adrenaline could not suppress, you could clearly see Brad just giving up his will to live while Michael keeps talking even after one of his lungs (supposedly) has been blasted to bits.
@@godslayer9000 another comment on here said it was a squib and that seems the most plausible.

Well Trevor is there because he got ran out of Los Santos, nobody else to turn to after Ron and... He's doing drug running for Trevor Philips industries.
