    My wife has a habit of buying plants and letting them die so I've taken it upon myself to learn about the plants in an effort to rescue them. Being a hopeless newbie, I took to the internet where I learned about the dangers of overwatering. As a result I've become a little paranoid about watering and it's frustrating not knowing when to water. Needless to say I'm really happy I came across this video. Thanks Erika!

    Here's a little cool pearl of info just for fun! Those moisture meters use the salts in the soil to read the moisture. So if you add salt into a cup of water, it'll read as super wet.

    • @ErikaLodes
      @ErikaLodes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      So that’s how it reads the moisture!! I knew it had something to do with salt lol, thanks for the insight 😌

    It's a galvanic cell, a battery. Batteries use two dissimilar metals (copper, alkalines, lithium, lead, etc) and an electrolyte (salt water, acid, etc).
    The meter will have more or less electrical flow depending on water content.

    FYI: I had the darker green meter for a couple of years. Used primarily for moisture, and didn't care too much for the pH probe; which coincidentally broke last summer, but did not affect the adjacent moisture probe nor readings.

  • @lb2791
    @lb2791 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I find my moisture meter really useful but at the same time very inconclusive a lot of the time. Depending on the spot you hit, you might touch a root which will screw up the reading, and if you use soil mixes with perlite, orchid bark and such it's actually hard to find a spot that gives you a good reading.

    She cooks...!!! This is the same common point that I have locked into.... Reminds me of chemistry class where results were "titrated"... specific changes... measured after each and every one so the "results" are specific to any changes made.. that way it makes the path of 'bread crumbs" more obvious and far easier to find the X on the treasure map!!

    You’re so right about taking the guide that comes with the moisture meter with a grain of salt. My moisture meter’s guide says sansevieria is a green zone 6-7 plant, which I guess means you should water it when it is still wet and that is simply not true.

First, because I didn't know exactly how to use it ; now, thanks to your video it seems so easy, so Im gonna try ; actually I'd like to use it with my spider plant : I dont want to over water her so its a bit complex sometimes to know exactly when its time to do it ; im still a bit scared of the moisture meter because I have the impression that it can destroy some roots..but your video will help me for sure ! There's another thing I want to tell you : the way you speak is great ! Its so nice to hear you ; your voice is very pleasant and I understand every word you say which is not always the case! Getting it wet doesn't hurt it. You should not leave it in water, but you do need to clean it off.
    I know you use alcohol to clean it in between using it in plants because you don't want to
    spread diseases if one of your plants gets sick, but I am pretty sure you can rinse dirt off
    with water. They do need to be cleaned.

      @@annasyusoff No, I have no real solution. These items are not very exact. I guess you have to get some experience. But waiting a few seconds if it falls quickly can not be wrong.

    Your thai monstera needs a more aerated soil. 50% orchid bark, 30% soil, 20% perlite is a good mixture. They’re very, very prone to root rot. I find Potting soil + perlite is not well draining enough.

      You’re 100% right about that, but I can’t move him for a while 😪 I would love love love to put him in a better soil mix!! I have to force myself to leave him alone haha. He’s recovering & I don’t want to bother him since he’s been through so much. That’s why the moisture meter is KEY for him! Good looking out though, I appreciate it 😊

    Thanks a lot for this video! It really helped me. Just one question: Using the moisturemeter regularly can't hurt the roots?

    I have a question about the depth of the meter. I know that many of my plants have roots that have not filled the pot therefore, the soil on the bottom is not used by the plant and is moist compared the half level. Do you submerge your meter to the very bottom of all your pots?

    So how long do you leave the meter in before you take a reading? When I first put it in I get a 7 but it slowly goes down over the next couple minutes to a 2/3. So is it at a 7 or is it dry and needs watered?
