  • Reverse 180s, also known as J-Turns are a very useful way to get your vehicle turned around quickly so you can drive away to safety. It might look like a Hollywood maneuver, but it is an important skill for tactical driving. Team O’Neil instructor Brent Trail goes over the basic steps to perform reverse 180s in all vehicle types and why this is a great skill to have in your back pocket if you are driving in a high risk environment.

I did this once in my car when my at the time girlfriend was following me and got lost, pulled up next to her and told her to follow me, followed by a 10/10 j turn on the dirt road and then following THAT with a 0/10 pendulum turn through a U and that was the end of that car. But she married me so I must have impressed her somehow

I learned how to I.D. today.
But in all seriousness, J-turns are incredibly fun. I taught myself around 10 years ago in a 4 speed 1988 Nissan Sentra 2 door.

J turns is one of the things fwd cars are great at. I tend to dab brakes in rwd at 90 degrees to keep whole J turn tighter though. Great video

The J turn In the Fiesta at the very beginning of the video, once you swing the car around, you enter 2nd gear. In the BMW you call out entering 1st after bring it around - is there a reason for entering first instead of second, or does it just depend - like any other time - how fast you're going at the time you make the turn?

The procedure for reverse 180s in an all wheel drive are the same as the rear wheel drive.

@@Teamoneilrally I saw that in the video, more important for me is how to do it with automatic transmission?!

    • @Teamoneilrally

@@mjtia From a weight transfer perspective, the physics would be the same as we discussed in the all wheel drive, with that said we would not recommend this technique in a high center of gravity vehicle. Shifting from reverse to drive would be the same, keep in mind with modern safety systems one could encounter some hurdles.
