Calva is not a luxury drink, it's the kind of spirit regular people in Normandy drink daily. Which is why Calvados is ridiculously low-priced, even high-quality ones like VSOP or higher grade Domfrontais. But, and you warn of it, it does have a sharpness to it, a very characteristic burn that sets in after the first fruity notes. I love it, but that sharpness can turn some people off. That palate-cleansing sharpness is probably why it is traditionally served *during* dinner, to be sipped between courses (le trou Normand - the Normandy hole), instead of as an aperitif or an after-dinner drink.
Could you review Chateau du Breuil's Réserve des Seigneurs 20 year old Calvados. I bought a bottle of that for my dad as a Christmas present but he hasn't opened it yet as he still has an opened Chateau du Breuil 12 year old that I got for him the previous year. He already really likes 12 year old so I am dying to know how the more expensive 20 year old tastes like.

I just remembered one my favorite stories I once heard, it involves cognac. Disclaimer, I am not sure if this story is true or not but it could be for all I know. Basically in some bar in the Finnish capital Helsinki, some rich guy (the guy who told me the story mentioned him by name, but I don't remember what his name was) is drinking Monopol cognac alone. The guy is type of rich guy who has been rich his whole life, which means he does not want to make a big deal out of his wealth. Then two young newly rich guys walk into the bar. Of course they are the type of rich people that have a need to flash out their money everytime they have a chance. The two guys notice the older rich guy and ask on what he is drinking. The older rich guy says he is drinking Monopol. The two young rich guys burst out laughing and start to taunt "Monopol? You are actually drinking freaking Monopol!?" The older rich guy calmly walks to the counter and the bartender asks on what he would like. The older rich guy says "I am buying every single bottle of brandy and cognac you have, except the Monopol." The bartender presents the massive bill to the older gentleman, he pays it. The bartender asks "What do you want to with all these bottles?" The older gentleman says calmly "Pour them down the drain. And get me an another glass of Monopol." :D
