the “only cerebral academic reads matter” to “love stories can also be beautiful and important” pipeline is truly the most freeing thing i have experienced in my past year of getting back into reading, especially as someone who used to read almost exclusively YA romance/fanfiction in middle and high school. and even though during times like these it can feel frivolous and silly to seek solace in light entertainment, i always find that it reminds me to be grateful for the privilege i have to find comfort and community in books, no matter how thought-provoking or serious the subject matter is.

I think a balanced approach is best to truly enjoy reading. Read some challenging fiction to tickle your brain and read some light fiction to relax and entertain yourself. Both is important and you can learn from both.

@@TheOriginalDogLPdefinitely agree i was an english major in college and every book i read for school fundamentally changed me as a person and my view of the world, but often they dealt with subject matter that would be difficult for a lot of people to read every day. letting myself breathe in between gut wrenching (but necessary and still amazing) reads has allowed me to expand my horizons and honestly just be a more enthusiastic reader in general. :)

that pyramid tells me that you and i have a similar struggle with romance books: i love men who are pathetic and going through mental turmoil and maybe a bit miserable, but i also need him to actually be a good guy that treats his love interest right, even if he slips up sometimes. as a fanfic reader, i was never here for snape, edward cullen, or sasuke. finding a romance book that succeeds at both is actually pretty hard, but it always hits SO good when it does. eager to see what you recommend....

15:16 “A Reason For It All” sounds like my version of wanting substance in a romance novel.
There’s so many cut and paste contrived plots that feel like a re-rinse of every small town romance or Hallmark-esque movie. Give me something unique in the story beyond what I’m expecting. Give me characters with surprising flaws. Give me side characters I’m weirdly invested in. Give me original and funny and cute banter. Give me trope switching, the turning of a trope, or no trope. Give me realistic situations that challenge the characters. Make these characters feel like living breathing people, because I want PEOPLE to fall in love. Not caricatures.
Don’t give me a book marketed as romance that’s honestly just deserving of the AO3 tag “plot? We don’t know her”. I don’t want a backdrop and half thought out unoriginal plot just for the characters to have a reason to have sex. Give me a plot and a backdrop that makes me cry when they are intimate because it makes me believe that love *exists*
Sorry, really passionate about this lol.

@@rovilan I'm currently re-reading WILD SWANS by Jung Chang, which is the best non-fiction book I've ever read. It's a family autobiography; the author is a historian who specializes in 20th Century China, and she does a fantastic job of detailing "here's what was going on in China at the time, why it was happening, and how it did or did not affect me and my family."
It's nuts. Her grandma was a warlord's concubine, her mom smuggled detonators into a city for Communists while her dad was a guerrilla fighter, and she herself was a Red Guard as a teenager. You can go in knowing absolutely NOTHING about modern Chinese history and finish the book with a much more comprehensive understanding of what went down in one of the most insane time periods of that nation.

I love your pyramid take! I think for me I think of that top one more as a “why should I give a f***”. If you’re a really empathetic person emotions can be exhausting and the real world can burn through a lot of that emotional bandwidth. If I’m going to really open my heart up to the emotional turmoil of fictional characters there has to be something that makes the roller coaster worth investing in.
A lot of time with romance it can just be that when I read “the end” I feel a little better about the human condition or general warm, fuzzy, borderline parasocial “I’m just so happy for you two crazy kids!” energy.

Love that Half A Soul and The Heart Principle showed up on this list! Those are 2 favorites of mine as well. Half A Soul carries the Regency romance genre imo and it's got magic, so I love it all the more. The Heart Principle really hit home. I love that whole series for it's autism representation, but that one specifically for its look into caregivers. I read it when I was considering quitting being a teacher and I connected it to that experience in a really deep way.
For any lovers of the fluff portion of this list who have read them all already, I'd recommend With Love, From Cold World by Alicia Thompson! I really connected to the FMC, and there's a great cast of side characters who are a great example of a queer friend group.

no bc when i say that your videos are fundamental to how i cope with my flare-ups i'm being so serious. like i've had a few pretty bad burnout/depression/other chronic illness flareups that left me kind of incapable of doing anything over the course of the last three or so months and your videos have been so so helpful and such a bright spot for me when i'm in the trenches. genuinely thank you for existing xoxo

lexi ur back!!!!! loveddd the video --- i've read (and enjoyed) 7 of the books you talked abt here so i'm excited to try out the rest ☺ my personal rec for u is cat sebastian's you should be so lucky which is a historical (like 1960s not like victorian or regency) romance featuring a flopping baseball player and a news reporter and it has Basically Everything in ur pyramid, trust

This was one of my fave books of the year! Cat Sebastian has been delivering excellent romances for like a decade, but something about You Should Be So Lucky just hit hard and hit great.
