You missed a few things. In 2005, there was a leveraged buyout that caused their immense amount of debt, which prevented them from adapting to the market, thereby causing them to file for bankruptcy in 2017 and brought us to where we are now.

Parents nowadays just seem to not care about what they give their kids. Kids are getting more greedy and just expect things now. By age 7, my step-nephew already has his own iPad and Nintendo 3DS. By age 10 I was lucky to just have a PS2, which was for both me and my brother, not individual. I don't understand why kids nowadays apparently "need" an iPhone, or PS4, or any other technology. It's so sad to see the end of Toys R Us, I remember spending hours there looking round at all the awesome stuff. Can only hope toys have a resurgance of sorts in the near future

Jack Tyler my brother is 8 and when he was 7 he got an xbox. Oh goodness. When I was 7 I didn’t have any electronics other than my tv. I honestly will admit, I’m on my computer every single day. But it just seems that kids want to seem “older” and more mature. Heck, people in my grade are already dating. (Not revealing what grade for safety reasons) but let me tell you, I find it strange.

This is so sad, when I was a child I wouldn't be comfortable buying toys any where except Toys R Us, it was my favorite store and every time I entered I wanted to buy the whole dolls section, in my location it still is there, but I think it's losing money too because it isn't full of people like before when I was young..

Hypo Have you ever thought back to your childhood? It was better right, no crime in the neighbourhood , the summers were warmer, tv was great, everything was perfect. Except really we don’t remember or we like to forgot what the past was really like.
For example, in the video Toys R Us was on a steady decline two decades ago. It’s golden age ended ages ago. It didn’t matter how many kids shows were revived over the years and how many more types of toys and games they brought in, the digital age another part of the recent past began to dominate. How many shops sold toys then and now. They have for years, it just something we forgot.

Former GameStop employee here - when I left, we were supplementing sales with shirts & "nerd" merch from ThinkGeek and Funko Pop figures because we weren't making huge profits off pre-owned games due to digital sales. Closed a lot of stores about this time last year. I think the company has under 10 years left.

Toys-R-Us is soon to be Toys-R-Gone.:'( I recently went there on St.Patrick's Day to get Kirby Star Allies, and plan on visiting my local store one last time. Also, I went to New York a couple weeks ago and was very sad that they got rid of that iconic Toys-R-Us with the Ferris Wheel. Oh well...all good things must come to an end.

Toys R Us always seemed to have higher prices. Lego sets were $3-10 more for the same set than Target, or even Lego’s own website. Then I learned something LAST WEEK while in Toys R Us. The customer service person was talking to another customer and said that they price match any online major retailer’s prices. And I put it to the test - as the items I picked up were priced higher than online stores. At the register I showed the cashier my phone and without hesitation she adjusted the price.
Had they only put up signs or advertised price matching, I would have shopped there more! (I always feel bad to ask for a price adjustment.)
Now, I went there with my son and he asked where the cool toys were. We looked around - there were a good selection of Lego’s, some science stuff, toddler toy section (well stocked), girl’s doll section all in pink, and then 4 rows of random boy toys. It was quite odd and then it got me thinking: “Is there even still the latest hot toys for sale?” Maybe not!
In the 80’s there were tv shows created just to sell an awesome line of toys. There were toys from movies then turned into kid’s cartoons - to market the toys to kids. But at some point these direct to kid marketing went away, and my son can stream Netflix movies anytime. Nothing special about waking up at 8am to sneak downstairs and binge watch Saturday morning cartoons before your parents woke up.
And that’s what killed Toys R Us. Had they adapted to sell stuff kids are actually interested in, they might have had more success in recent years. Or turn to the older customers and offer retro toy lines of stuff sold in the 80’s. Adults now are buying up toys from their childhood - either for their kids to play with or to put on a shelf to relive their happy times as a kid.
Toys R Us had a history of adapting, but in the past 7 years have stayed stagnant.
Gotta say though, as a new parent, Babies R Us was an awesome mega store of everything new parents needed and didnt even realize! Quality furniture and clothes and supplies and strollers and car seats and everything - with a large selection. Target can’t hold a candle to that store. Such a shame.

I say Burlington coat factory only because I remember my parents spending quite a bit of time finding baby items for my little sis. Hated it so much...

It was like that when all the Targets closed in Canada, a few days before it closed, my grandmother took me there one last time and it had those signs. Even the workers looked sad! When they said “have a great day” I almost cried, it was so sad!

I don't know if the Netherlands is the odd one out, but here the growth of internet sales stagnated at roughly 35% physical and 65% digital for general goods and 85% physical and 15% digital for food. - As we get more people in the country both groups are now growing percentually roughly equally past 2.5 years. I don't know if it'll hold on like that, but it caused some of the city centers, especially in smaller cities which started looking rather empty to boom back into life.
Toy stores are suffering here like in the USA though, Most toy stores in the country are now owned by Intertoys, which is keeping alive quite well still booking large profits after a struggle (Due to it's old holding company, not sales) in 2004-2012.
The total amount of toy stores is on the decline though, though it's not going as rapidly as stores like target or walmart that sell "everything" don't really exist here. The only major store I can think of that also sells toys that isn't a toystore is Blokker, which is downsizing massively (Fun fact: it's part of the same holding company as Intertoys used to be) and sells stuff like Kitchen appliances, Garbage cans, candles, DVD's and smaller house or festivities decorations and Hema, which is basically a sears "But Different" (That'd be a hastle to explain). (To your Surprise maybe, if you see stores like sears in the USA, they are booming, It's kind of their prime years right now.)

I loved Toys R Us cuz it was the only place that sold all the cool video game character action figures and toys that I only dreamed of as a kid. All my Sonic figures and whatnot... Good times. I had no idea they were doing so poorly in terms of profits. Hearing them closing down honestly breaks my heart. I know Amazon is a thing but I'll always miss getting my cool figures and shit from Toys R Us without having to wait for them to be delivered or having to hunt down trustworthy sellers who don't want an arm and a leg for the toys. :C

Actual there is a good possibility with the Amazon walk in stores. Not to say that Walmart or Target or any other grocery stores won't last but Amazon could potentially take the shopping market. Except for maybe pet shops just because of the aquarium community and the animal shelter/rescue programs

It sucks that they are closing they are the only ones that had a huge selection of amiibo. Ya i know i can go online and get them but it was always fun going in there and finding a super rare figure or just something that you were not expecting.
That's how I fell too, the toys r us near my place had the best variety of amiibo, Pit, Palutena, Lucas, Ness, breath of the wild characters including link and Zelda, Splatoon, etc, all going neatly across the wall. And then there's Target whose selections are linear in comparison or every fucking Walmart that I've been to where they never restock and have empty shelves of mostly Bowser and Peach.
Yo you're not even wrong,this is the truest thing.Mines legit still has Pit,Jigglypuff,Fox,Ryu,Lucas,Ness,etc and usually I couldn't even think of dreaming of seeing those specifically all in one location at once.It's crazy.And as well then there's my wal-marts just having not even any type of amiibo since they sorta just disapeared but the last of what I could remember is just a few Luigi's and Waddle Dees and that was about it.Nothing else.
