What kind of car were you driving? Would a sedan have any trouble getting up there?

A sedan is enough unless you need more cargo space. Areas around San Jose, Jaco, Arenal and Monteverde are well paved, sedan worked just fine on my roadtrip. Be careful when you rent, Costa Rica car rentals have some mandatory surcharges (pretty high) that the companies never include in the base rent price -- people learn about them only when it is time to pick up the car. There are ways to avoid those surcharges when you bring a simple letter from your homeland credit card issuer though. Look up the rental company called Adobe, they are the most transparent when it comes to the rental terms. Take care!

I do have a question, Should i get insurance for the car? How's the driving ?

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Roads for the most part are fine except the ones taking you to specific hotels and small villages off the beaten path, those can be unpaved dirt roads. I believe in Costa Rica as a tourist you have to buy car insurance by law, and there are several components of insurance -- now, some part of the insurance you can refuse if you have a letter from your foreign (e.g. USA, Mexico etc) insurance company. But that letter needs to have precise wording on it. The best source for you would be Adobe Rent A Car company, they are local to Costa Rica and take time to educate customers about the complexities of car insurance in CR. Indeed, car insurance in Costa Rica is a pretty complicated subject.
