  • Is a 13 year old lBM still any good for modern work? In this episode I unbox and upgrade one of the last IBM branded laptops in mint condition for daily use as my main laptop! I also unbox and play the horror/adventure game Black Mirror. And, we have reached 100 subscribers! Thank you all for your support!

    I have this exact laptop...mine is a 2007 model in excellent shape. I have ordered the T7400 chip (I read this is the highest my motherboard will take without having to flash the bios although you did not seem to have any issues) and a ram upgrade to two stick of 2 gigs, (The Thinkpad blogs says the chipset will only recognize 3 gigs max. but I could not find two 1.5 gig sticks) along with an SSD. I got this for free a few years ago when a big company I was working at upgraded all of their laptops after windows stopped supporting XP. They just threw them away. I love this thing. Very informative video, thanks.

      Does it utilize the whole 4GB of RAM? I heard that there is a limitation of Intel 945 motherboard which wouldn't hold for more than 3GB of RAM(even if we installed 4GB of RAM for it)

    • @elmariachi5133
      @elmariachi5133 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@loujin6256 That's right, because the Intel chipset used inside has limited address range. But you can improve on this using coreboot as BIOS replacement and disabling useless things, like Firewire and such, which will free space, to make use of more RAM.

    Love these machines, I have one of the last “IBM like” 15” thinkpads, a practically maxed out W500, with a Core 2 Duo T9900, 8gb DDR3 1066mhz, 1920x1200p display, a dodgy 750gb seagate 7200rpm drive (I’ll someday upgrade it to a SSD when I feel it needs it) and windows 10 pro. (Whatever the current build is)
    (Probably not anytime soon, as watching TH-cam at 720p60/1080p30 practically maxes out the CPU, as the 512mb FirePro V5700/Mobility Radeon 3650 doesn’t support OpenCL or anything remotely modern in terms of video decoding acceleration, so having the fastest CPU is very helpful in today’s resource intensive internet)

    That game looks great. Sucks that the copy protection makes it unrunable on modern systems. Lucky that Lenovo used SATA connectors. I know some HP laptops at the time used this proprietary PATA connector which never caught on so it'd be a challenge getting an SSD into one.

  • @photoniccannon2117
    @photoniccannon2117 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love my T60. I did put the 9 cell battery in mine, and I've got the 1400x1050 display. TH-cam struggles a bit on Linux (hardware decoding doesn't work), but it can still play at 480p or 720p and is fairly snappy for just about everything else.
    The internet cards in these things weren't very good, so I use a PCMCIA card and it significantly improves internet browsing performance. 3GB of RAM isn't terribly limiting in Linux, and the Radeon X1300 is good enough to play a lot of retro games without much trouble (I've gotten acceptable performance in Minecraft also, but I did have to reduce the settings quite a bit). The SATA interface used for the hard drive is limited to SATA 1 speeds (150MB/sec), so you won't be able to get anywhere close to maxing out the speeds of even the cheapest SSDs. I still bought a $15 cheap 256GB SSD from Amazon for the better IOPS, and it's probably still worth it from a random read-write performance standpoint. I definitely recommend it, but don't waste your money buying a nice one (you won't be able to benefit from the higher end ones anyway).
    You can definitely tell it's an old computer when you try to use it, but these T60s perform a lot better than you'd expect even in 2023. They are absolutely still very usable for everyday tasks as long as you upgrade a few things and are okay with not doing too much multitasking. As antiquated as these IBM machines are, they still outperform the brand new HP Streams that are being sold en-masse by the millions today. Especially if you get the PCMCIA wifi adapter, upgrade to 3GB of RAM, and have the 1400x1050 screen, they're actually pretty comfortable to use even on the modern web today.

    I still have my T60. It"s the X1400 one, and back the I upgraded the CPU to a T7600 (the best one that can be fit in this notebook), 4GByte RAM, Coreboot for making better use of more RAM, LED backlight for the display, a better miniPCIe-WiFi adapter, an Broadcom Crystal HD hardware decoding module for playing modern codecs smoother in media payers, and an SSD. I also intended to overclock the T7600 CPU, but before I did so, I had to ditch the notebook, because of the horrible x1400 GPU, which couldn't even play TH-cam videos in 720p anymore without lags :( Too bad the web browsers don't support the Broadom Crystal HD ..

      @Cassandra Awesome, well done. I have restored one of my T60's with a bootable XP Pro OEM CD using the serial on the IBM sticker. It worked well and I was able to activate the license. I only had to add a few drivers which are easily found online. However, it would be excellent if I could find the iso's for the original restore CD's. Don't forget to install TP fan control. Enjoy your new TP btw

    • @SilverSpoon_
      @SilverSpoon_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Cassandra Mine dualboots XP for games and retro stuff, it's really solid. and LMDE on XFCE for the internet or work stuff, cause it's this laptop I carry everywhere when I move. Battery is solid, and with a 256Gb SSD, it's more than decent. Then it's really a good machine for Linux. The only annoyance is the back/forward keys. Really they are horrible when you write a long post (that keyboard makes you love to type) so there's many solutions to remap or disable them around, to each their own.
      @Epictronics Firefox is a hog now on XP ( due to the successive updates and the multiple processes. ) unless you go for an older version that gets the job done for the sites you like, but along with that you have :
      Chromium. Fast, decent, really it's chrome without the bloat
      PaleMoon, a debloated FireFox.
      Seamonkey, same as PaleMoon, it'really the good old netscape-looking Moze, frugal in ram and all that.
      @Cassandra normally any XP install will redo the MBR and root files with its own, since Win7 is really like Vista's boot system, and I have upgraded a LOT of machines from Win Vista to XP, you don't even need to reformat. I think that can be the same for Win7.

    • @SilverSpoon_
      @SilverSpoon_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cassandra same, also it's mostly because I like to have my good old Adobe CS2 anywhere, I edit a lot of photos, and that's not something Linux can do.
      to roll back from Win7 to XP, and understandable on such an old machine, all you need is a WinXP install disc.
      Go to mydigitallife forums, there's plenty of sources for clean discs ISOs of XP, even the 64bit is pretty decent. But I recommand a Corporate Edition, so you just install it, and not gonna get bothered with even entering a serial or anything. If you need one, contact me!
      and boot from it. really, then follow the destructions on screen. I still advise to leave 8 or 10Gb of extra space for a Linux install, so in case you have an issue on XP you can still have it operational.
      OR if Linux gives you a moist INITRAMFS> shell on the boot, well you still have an operational computer.

Also keeping it as a maxed out Windows XP machine makes a lot of sense too since this machine was basically made for it and is still a native 32 Bit OS as well. Not sure if WinXP 64bit would run so well since this version was just an afterthought anyway. Personally i cannot really recommend a lot of current gen Operating Systems for it since 32bit is basically being phased out everywhere. Even among Linux Distros. For the longest time i suggested Linux Mint but even that doesn't have a 32 Bit version anymore. So there's not much options. 32 Bit Hardware, like the T60, is just not possible to use with modern operating systems you still get security updates for. Which is why i can really only suggest using it as a retro machine with an older Windows like XP or an older version of a 32 Bit version of Linux Mint with XFCE desktop.
