The CRV taillights were a copy of Volvo's wagons and crossovers. Volvo started the whole vertical taillight style back in the 90's with the 850 wagon.

I made a comment and deleted because I realized this is just a review and does not reflect the opinion of a Volvo owner. We bought the T8 to take advantage of its obvious optional driving ability. I'm not giving this car back. I'm an ex BMW 3 series driver and I don't miss it. The power is instant and efficent. The space is amazing. The level of interior quality for the Inscription is awesome. Finally I have a car where the sound system is awesome and the level of engine noise is where it belongs...outside. Raising and lowering the vehicle from the rear is great but I rarely use it. The third seats is cool...easy access more leg room than I thought but I've only sat in the rear once to ke-ke with an old friend on a road trip. Everywhere we go people stare at the car. This is a very good purchase...I have nothing more to say. It's just a car but an expensive investment. I LUV MY VOLVO.

Terry Henry the only thing negative I have to say about your statement is that a car is not an investment, it is an expense. Unless you are a cab driver, or rent the car out to someone else for a profit, all you do is spend more money than what comes in for this item.
With that said I love this car! It has some major issues such as cost of repair of something breaks, and that infotainment system having every control in it but it can be overlooked somewhat.
It's a car that I think you lease and let your business pay for it (at least it can be a write off). If you like it after the lease is up, then buy it. But those maintainence bills are gonna get high 6+ years in.
But def not an investment... Love this car but not an investment. More of a treasure. An experience.

That's a general statement plagued to any car. I have no intentions on keeping it. I've changed my mind...all those electric cars coming out. I WANT IN. My neighbor hasn't bought gas in 2 years. I'm annoyed now even though the gas milage is way better than the BMW we had.

Terry i must ask, have you ever had any problems with the electronics of the car? many people on edmunds give the car a bad review because of the buggy electronics

    • @toptobottom247
      @toptobottom247 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They don't like the futuristic infotainment pad. They think it's another thing to learn and don't want to learn the system. When you bought your first iphone...you had to learn to use the system. As I said before this car is beautiful and it delivers. I'm not a fan of buttons. I prefer a more simple solution like the touch screen and voice command.

Thanks for continuing to make these long format reviews. I feel like a lot of content producers (who are in it mostly for the views/money) just go with what the analytics are telling them and shorten their videos to match. But your end product is so much more in-depth and fully realized than theirs, and I really appreciate it. Do you think you're going to get your hands on the S90 at some point?

It's about comfort and luxury, not about driving dynamics and driver engagment, and it's at least being honest about it. A *lot* of people like that. This is a car you can do 12 hour drives without any fatigue, it's just quiet and comfortable, yeah it doesn't corner well but who gives a shit. There are other SUVs to buy if that's what you want.

I own a 2017 XC90 (T6 Momentum+ with all packages). Some things I disagree with: 1) Temperature control is the easiest of any vehicle I've owned. I get in my car and "Auto Climate" does the rest. I rarely have to adjust temperature. When I do, and I'm driving, one press of the Voice Command button on the steering wheel and saying "Set temperature 75 degrees" and it's done. 2) Almost anything you need to do on the Sensus display can be done via voice command and/or the steering wheel functions. It is not in any way a distraction. I realize he only had the vehicle for a brief time but I own this vehicle and never have I almost "ran off the road" trying to accomplish something. The only time I ever had to do something "risky" was unlocking my phone, so I put Pilot Assist II on (semi-autonomous autopilot) and unlocked my phone carefully while trying to keep my eyes on the road to make sure PAII didn't kill me. In fact, I'm surprised he didn't touch on this. PAII is pretty garbage in terms of auto-pilot technology. As an owner that is a major complaint. If you want to look at real issues you may face with this vehicle head over to the SwedeSpeed forum. Core complaints: Inability to select a default drive mode (it's always set to "Comfort"), Start/Stop doesn't always work, PAII is honestly garbage relatively to other auto-pilot systems, the Volvo On Call app is garbage as well. One thing I do agree with is Sensus is laggy for the first ~20 - 30 seconds and Remote Start does not help as it doesn't actually turn Sensus on completely.

I too drive a 2016 Volvo XC90 Momentum+ and literally ran off the road tonight trying to turn my heated seat off. I hate the sensus system but love the car and I’m getting ready to replace it with a newer one because mine just hit 125k miles. I’m getting the Bowers & Wilkins in my next one which is my reason for watching the video after owning mine for 2 years. I also love pilot assist and the fantastic park assist. I just want more features… B&W stereo, massaging seats, and air suspension.

We own the 2016 XC90. We bought it for the family friendly/utilitarian and quality reputation that Volvo offers. We are a family of four (plus one dog and the occasional ride with the grandparents) and for all intensive purposes this SUV meets our needs perfectly, in terms of passenger and cargo capacity. I'm not one to fuss over driving and engine performance so in that regard I am also satisfied. I would say that this reviewer's assessment of the "infotainment" system is SPOT ON!!! His assessment has been my experience. It is frequently "laggy" and "buggy". To the extreme point that one month after purchase my car was rendered completed incapacitated because the "computer system" crashed. It need to be towed to the dealership for a reboot. One last thing, the voice command is almost completely useless if you are trying top do anything else other than make a phone call, and even then that works on the first attempt only 60% of the time. Time will tell if I would recommend this vehicle. So far I am enjoying it, it's working for our family. I'd say this TH-cam review is the most comprehensive and HONEST review of this vehicle I have seen.

Absolutely love the understated luxury of this vehicle. It will age well and be classy looking for years to come. I would probably keep the XC90 for 7-8 years, thus buying an extended service contract through Volvo would be a requirement, at least in my eyes. Thanks for your review!

  • @Trades46

Me and my father driven this car. I'm not a fan of SUV but I did admit it is a great family automobile. It is comfortable, luxurious, surprisingly well equipped (the Germans are getting stingy), abundant safety features (it is a Volvo after all) and while my father was skeptical of a 4000lbs+ SUV powered by a 2.0 liter, power is impressive, equal to that of the Mercedes ML350 (nee GLE).
As for the 'lease vs buy', almost any luxury SUV falls into the 'lease it' category. I would not want to touch a X5 or Cayenne with more than 200,000miles on it with a 5ft stick. I think Volvo service costs won't be as bank breaking as that of an Audi or BMW, but it certainly isn't a Lexus either.

As a MY16 Inscription owner (purchase), I found this review nearly identical to my experience for the course of 9 months - the most glaring wrinkle being with the Sensus infotainment. At my first oil service, the car received a Sensus software update that I thought would pretty much erase the infotainment's lag at vehicle start-up - errrr, not so much. Still to this day after receiving said software update it acts as though it's still waking up from a hangover. Hopefully this gets sorted out in a subsequent update. However, Sensus is great after its initial boot.
Aside from that, there isn't too much else to fault with this vehicle with a little over 13k miles on the clock. The refinement is top shelf. And as this was my first-ever SUV purchase, I'm beyond impressed with what Volvo have come up with as modern crossover proposition at this price-point. Brilliant review @ Savagegeese! Cheers to all current and soon-to-be owners.

At last a voice of reason! I have probably watched nearly every English speaking review on TH-cam of the latest range of Volvo cars and can say with some confidence that savage geese outclasses the competition. How refreshing it is to find these reviews free from journalistic cliches or superficial banalities. Amongst the reviewers many pertinent comments, he accurately points out that manufacturers have become obsessed with new touch screen technology with at a cost to practicality and safety. I too on several occasions in my Volvo S90 have almost veered off the road trying to change a simple control on the Sensus! It is ironic that Volvo who have built their reputation on safety with their aim that "no one will die in our cars," could potentially undermine that statement if their customers end up crashing their beautifully designed and safety conscious cars just because they dared to use the touchscreen.

Another great review. As nice as this vehicle is, I just can't see people "purchasing" these vehicles as much as leasing them (With full warranty coverage). For me, this isn't a "car" - it's a living room with four wheels. One might be inclined to sell their home, place a flat screen in the back and save on a mortgage payment. What kills me is the level of complexity it takes to operate everything. Many "techies" will love this for this sole reason. Give me the luxury, but tone-down the "Samsung" in the dash, and add some simple "human" control interfaces. I'd like it much more that way. BTW, the "Shoppe" sections of your reviews are priceless. For those of you who say they're not buying a 4 cylinder SUV for 80k:
    1. The XC90 T6 puts out 316 horsepower. Ample for this car (and the way owners will drive them).
    2. The XC90 T6 gets 20/27 city/highway gas mileage. That's excellent for such a large SUV.
    3. The XC90 T8 (5k more than the T6 after federal PHEV rebate) boasts 400hp, way more than any competitor.
    4. Four-cylinder engines are the future ... well, at least the near future. The whole car industry will soon downsize in cylinder count and finally make the switch to electric or alternative fuel methods.

Cruz er Do your homework. Volvo reliability is better than Most and consumer reports rates most there cars at average or better than average reliability. As far as leasing goes it's for people who don't drive many miles and like having new cars every 3 years. Having a car note for the rest of your life is for suckers. Most modern cars will last 10-15 years easily with proper maintenance. Leasing is throwing away money. All my Volvos have been trouble free. Every car manufacturer makes cars with issues so that reliability argument is tired!!!

TooTallTang yeah he is a real find. I especially like that he looks underneath the car. And when something is crappy, he says so and doesn't sugarcoat it.
Most reviewers totally overlook maintainence issues and cost. Let's you know if this should be a lease, buy, rent, or a get lost.
For me this review (and a couple of others) let me know that this is def a lease car (even tho leases are technically most expensive than buying in the long run). A really good test drive (and maybe a day rental if I can find a place that has it) will be the final determination on lease or buy.

Cross shopping XC90 B6 with new MDX and QX60. My "heart" really likes the XC90. Compared to the MDX and QX60, it was my favorite SUV to drive with that low end torque, and I do love the interior. Its perfect for daily suburban/city driving. But I also tow a pop up camper a couple of times a year for family camping trips. I have nightmares of the "check engine" light coming on in some remote part of Montana while pulling my camper. So my "head" tells me the XC90 would not be a financially wise decision given the significant amount of reliability problems frequently mentioned across message boards and auto reviews. Thanks for the informative review.

I completely agree with you on the broken system of having everything on a touch screen. It's one of the things that has kept me from pre-ordering a Tesla Model 3 because I can't just reach over with muscle memory and turn things on and off or increasing the temperature or volume, etc. I'm sad to see that cars are headed toward having only touch screens because that just begs you to not pay attention to driving. As if teenagers on their phone weren't bad enough, now there'll be people trying to figure out the new technology in their car while driving.

This is my kind of car! I love the technology. What I don't like is the complexity and repair costs of air suspension. I've had air on Range Rover and Q7 and my friend has it on a Mercedes GLS, but all have had either compressor or sensor or airbag issues. As far as automatic traffic sign recognition, auto headlamps and dipping, auto wipers, surround cameras and stuff like that goes, its even fitted to mid range compact cars such as my Nissan Qashqai these days. So is a touchscreen infotainment system. So I'm not worried about any of that and I love it.
I like this car so much that I've ordered a diesel D5 Inscription model for March 1st 2017. With the mechanical suspension with the unusual transverse leaf spring at the rear. Winter Pack and Xenium.
Technology isn't going to be uninvented and this is one of the best iterations available. Using voice control to alter radio stations and HVAC settings is great, fast and reliable. Even my Honda CRV can do this. Absolutely no need to menu-dive while driving. None. In fact this car pointedly doesn't have doesn't have dozens of physical switches like, say, a Porsche Macan or Cayenne, and it does have options like the head-up display and so on to avoid distraction and lack of focus. It has features that monitor driver concentration and awareness and suggests rest stops and even navigates to the nearest convenient rest stop automatically.
There have been many software updates since launch to eliminate lag and some of the bugs you found. There are still one or two, so I believe, but they are well on the way to being sorted. That's another advantage of technology, in that firmware can be updated, even over the air on this Volvo up to a certain file size. Not only can bugs and operatability be modified but new features can be added if appropriate. Rather like an iPad and updating the operating system and separately updating the apps.
If I'm disappointed in any way, I'll let you know. As far as failure points go, hopefully most of the electronic systems are designed to last for decades reliably. In my experience of owning some seriously advanced equipment, in 99% of cases that aren't connector or sensor issues, mechanical problems still make up 90%+ of all issues, and despite today's mechanical complexity, in general today's vehicles are far more reliable and last longer than was historically the case. There are so many people who reach middle age and say "this new complicated lighter, faster running, advanced stuff will never last like they did when I was young". Its a human condition. My father used to say it….. "they don't make stuff to last these days like they used to", yet he has been consistently proven to be wrong [apart from with washing machines].
By the time the Volvo is ten to fifteen years old and the dash gives up, there will be dashboards at the breakers for it. If the centre screen gives up, along with all the control buttons accessed through it, will it actually stop the car driving? I don't think so. A lot of the systems are optional to driving, while the ventilation can either be voice controlled or some clever people will bypass the screen and fit a few ordinary switches and a bit of twine to get it to work, just as people have always done at the dirty end of the car care business.

I feel enlightened. Comparing it to the Audi Q7, makes it a tough choice. Especially with Audi's "cockpit display". But the design of this car is exciting. Interiors are a big deal for me..and I have never seen one that I liked as much as this one. As you rightly pointed out, there are certainly significant negatives, but for me...the interior design and sophistication is so dead on, it overrides the negatives. It's also less than the Audi..so there's that.

I bought a XC90 T6 R-Design with Polestar optimization. The advantage is that if you are looking for a more sporting experience, this design language offers paddle shifters, alcantera leather and nearly every option available on the Inscription. One point of consideration, I don't suffer from lag with my touch screen as shown here. It's quite fluid and easy to navigate. The system boots from door open and is ready within seconds... perhaps the test example didn't have recent software updates?

I traded it in after the roof starting leaking. It has an amazing interior, great exterior. Below average drivetrain and average ride quality. If you get the bowers it has one of the best audio systems we tested under 200k. I miss it in some ways, but the water leak was last straw.

@@alesbobek1264 I haven't had time to do video about it. The long and short is I had an extended warranty until 999k miles. At 22k supercharger seals were leaking. They wound up replacing it. When got it back, the supercharger leak cause engine to run lean, destroyed primary catalyst and O2 sensor. Car also had a brake job at 18,000 mi rotors and pads which became instantly warped after two road trips at 25,000 miles they replaced them under warranty but the brakes were trash and were replaced four times in 40,000 mi they can't handle heat. One of the contributors on the last road trip we found was if you're using the propilot assist in any type of elevation the brakes are constantly coming on to slow the car down and I think it just warps the rotors. I had it in for a suspension clunk in the front end they found a heat shield was loose and rubbing on one of the control arms. I had various clunks in the back which were related to the recall or extended warranty on the air suspension. I brought it in multiple times for odd engine performance issues where the car would buck hesitate it was like it was cutting timing every time you accelerated more so in the heat they never resolved it. Car started to develop a rattle in the passenger side headliner from a clip that was loose. The 22-in wheels and tires combo was a mistake there were only two real tire options. A shitty summer tire and nerf winter which were all 400 a piece. My lifetime fuel economy was 19.7MPG. And the last straw was the leaking roof into the cabin that could not be fixed properly and required body work to resolve. There is more to discuss but I'll save it for video

I have the T8 Excellence and negotiated a 7 year or 150.000 km full Volvo warranty. Looks like Volvo has confidence in the product! The extended warranty was a deal breaker for me and I would properly not have bought the car if Volvo hadn’t giving me the confidence. I buy my cars and pay for them myself. My car has been absolutely faultless so far but I have only done 15.000 km.. my last car was a Range Rover Autoby, and absolute nightmare with tons of issues. I simply didn’t have the nerve to keep it as the warranty was going to expire in 6 months. Much to my surprise the T8 Excellence is a better luxury SUV than the Range Rover in top spec. My plan is to keep the Excellence even after the warranty expires.
