Writing a Beach Boys Song In One Day (New Products from JHS Pedals, Keeley Electronics, Benson Amps)

- Last year, the Beach Boys got in touch with Josh, asking him to put together a team of people to create gear harkening back to the glory days of the 60s, the time when the Beach Boys and so many others shined the brightest. That era left an indelible mark on the history of music and culture in ways both seen and heard. We didn't want to just reminisce, though. We wanted to offer something that would be useful and inspiring today and into the future. We are proud to bring two units to this beach party. First is the Good Vibrations - named after their hit single - an era-appropriate, bulb driven, Uni-Vibe style pedal with chorus and vibe options. Second, named after a long unreleased instrumental track, is the Punchline, an all-in-one bass rig designed so the player can just plug in and play, designed with the legendary bass sounds of the Wrecking Crew in mind. Grab your tiki drink and enjoy the show!
Find the Good Vibrations here: www.sweetwater.com/store/deta...
And the Punchline here: www.sweetwater.com/store/deta...
You can find the whole line, including the Surf's Up Tube Amp from Benson Amps and the two pedals from Keeley Electronics, here! www.sweetwater.com/shop/beach...

Please use this "create a song in a day" formula as a regular series. The best way to show off music gear is so show how it works in a song. This is one of the best music gear commercials I've seen in a while.
Would agree! Excellent replay value as well!
It's easily my favourite type of video to be honest, the finale of sonic boom season 1 is a great example aswell as first of october
Pete Thorn and Mike Herman enter the chat
Create a show like "Junkyard Wars" or "popular cooking show" where musicians equipped with a warehouse of gear and a lifetime of skill are asked to "create a modern Beach Boys song" or "What if Jimi Hendrix wrote a death metal song..."
I'd watch that for free!
Dude it’s such a terrible way to show off a pedal lol maybe if you’re 14 and don’t understand the sounds of chorus and drive.

Shout out to Chris Cron - what an insanely talented guy. Hope he can be a regular guest within the Rhett / Josh sphere in the future!
Well thank you!!! Rhett and Josh are amazing and I had a blast working with them
@@ChrisCronMusic Love u dude, more keys in guitar videos
@@ChrisCronMusic you guys need to do a “Writing a Crosby, Stills and Nash Song in One Day” because I was getting Stephen Still vibes with your vocals at the end.
With Chris involved, the Voice Tech pedal can go from fantastical dream to true reality now , amirite?
A Cron Job™ - The IT nerds will get it.
The best line is Josh saying "We just need John Stamos" lol.
That WAS awesome! 😂
Timely for me personally. Visiting my mom for Mother's day, I bought her Beach boys tickets. It was my first concert, and there has always been a picture of me, about 5 or 6 years old, on my mom's shoulders at the show, hanging in the living room. My father has also recently passed. Him being a musician, I have been sorting through his copious amounts of vintage gear, including a drip edge band master reverb, and an old Standel amp, both with spring reverb and vibrato and Tremolo. I've also uncovered his 12 string, piles of percussion toys, and a '64 Strat. The gear is a lot heavier than modern pedals, but I'm all set to record a "Beach Boys" song.
I mean, ya gotta!
That bass Preamp is insanely good, y’all really outdid yourselves with that one.
Well done brother. Really cool approach to new pedals.
Yo, @RhettShull, what are your thoughts on the Good Vibrations?
@@beaverpondlanedaring question.
Holy Crap! Song is Amazing! A lost Beach Boys classic. Bravo! Fantastic job.
Those Wild Honey-style vocal ad-libs were sweet
Agreed. A definitely stand-out moment. That dude really channels Carl. It's uncanny.
Over a Roll Plymouth Rock cadence in the backing vocals! A genuine tour of their late 60s output
For a project that initially seemed tongue in cheek, the final product sounds anything but. It was immediately obvious you guys were in full-send-mode. So impressed with the creativity and craftsmanship on display here. The vibe (and Chris’ vocals-Jeez!) is so crazily on pointe. I only wished I clicked on it sooner. Congrats and well-done to everyone involved.
Two things all these fine folks have in common: 1. They all care a LOT and do their very best at everything they do, and 2. They have fun in the process... laugh at the failures, and celebrate the successes.
If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. That doesn’t mean you won’t get tired or experience sleepless nights. Heck, you may not even get paid, but the knowledge that you created something of beauty leaves a sparkle in your eyes and a smile on your lips.
Great job, guys.
Whoever mixed this did a hell of a job. Mixing bass with a bass VI, a Baritone, a 12 string and high strung plus the guitars? That isn’t easy.
I’m blown away. So glad The Beach Boys are still getting recognition and inspiring musicians. JHS, Keeley, and Benson, thank you so much. Just ordered the Good Vibrations pedal. What a great day today
That is both a thrilling sugar rush of vintage pop goodness and hilarious! Well done, gentlemen, well done to you!
Incredible. Now make a whole album called Rhett Sounds.
This needs to be the top comment! Bravo sir.
LOL,😊 Perfect name. LOL
😂🤣
New flipper deterrent strategy. Confusion for the first 20-30 mins. They lose interest, prices stay low.
😂
Did they lose interest?
Stay low? I don't think they were low to begin with lol
Hats off to all! Chris Cron wrote a perfect song for the project, and he sounds like Carl Wilson singing! The arrangement was spot on. Wild!
Cool song, totally nailed the vibe!
Re: Carol Kaye bass tone: not a felt pick, just a normal one, BUT a piece of foam *over* the strings. Wedged inside the P-Bass ashtray back then, or taped across the strings on her modern Ibanez.
This brilliant. Gesus! Get this streaming everywhere, and get this nominated for a Grammy.
Beach Boys are probably my favorite band of all time. And you absolutely killed this! The melodies, the harmonies, the chord changes, the song structure. It's all SO beach boys. I feel like they have one of the most defining sounds ever!
Absolutely epic video guys, you killed it!
You'll appreciate the honesty of Rhett, who doesn't present himself as a guitarist or musician, but as a guy who "makes videos about guitar stuff" 👨🔬
What? :p Rhett is a musician, he is the guitarist for Noah Guthrie(on the verge of exploding, IMHO)...however, I do get what you are saying, he gives freely of his knowledge, instruments, and what its like on the road...it is his attitude which shines much like Josh and Chris
Yeah, I mean at this point making videos is my job so 🤷♂️
Thank God we didn’t have to hear his mediocre slide tone!
@@RhettShull
You’re a musician.
You are a TH-camr, but I do think that description, limits how many things that you do, whether it gets on the channel or not.
I think we have to redefine what an artist is, because your channel is a place that you express yourself, whether a video on a guitar or gear, or in a studio, at a gig, taking pictures with Tilly, etc.
It’s been very influential in the channel I’m going to be doing with a friend, after I move back to Asheville, NC this spring.
@@linksauce_1
Do you ever do freelance work, making videos for other people?
Not collabs, but more they send you audio and video, to make them a video out of it.
Just curious.
I complained once to my Sweetwater rep that there was no Bit O Honey in my candy, and ever since then I get bags of just Bit O Honey. Love you Robb, you’re the man.
The Beach Boy live in a special place in my heart and always will. Y'all did a superb job recreating the sounds and feel, including the obvious pick click on the bass. It's overwhelming to remember Brian Wilson did all this with so much less electronics, just pure skill and talent.
Thank you!!
My fav JHS vid. Love having Chris and Rhett here.
One of the best channels on this whole platform. Loved this launch concept. Song was beautiful and Chris is an insane talent.
thank you!!!
"We just need John Stamos." 😂
Where do y'all get the sheer audacity to be this insanely awesome???!!!
Great song. Gave me a warm feeling towards my Sweetwater rep. 🤣
lol!
This was incredible. I’m a huge Beach Boys fan and a JHS fan, and this was a perfect combo.
Lots of history to pay attention to in here.
Thanks a ton!
How funny that the punchline pedal enclosure resonance is in the key of the song?!
We did that on purpose 👀
@@jhspedals very niiice
One of the best sales pitch I have ever heard or seen. Ace.
Wow, what a nice song, and great job by Chris, Josh and Rhett.
Thank you! May 24th it’ll be streaming under my name.
I REALLy REALLY REALLY liked the song! You all did a fantastic job at getting the spirit of The Beach Boys on your original. The lead vocal was almost as if Brian was singing himself. Kudos! And Cheers!!
Thanks Rick!
Great job - very authentic vibe and feel.. Love Pet Sounds....
This is the most fun video that I've seen in a long time.
The song turned out well. Initially I thought it leaned pretty heavily on "Don't worry baby", but I can pick out melodoc and rhythmic things that were borrowed from other songs, but that just made it sound more Beach Boy like. Chris does a great job with those harmonies, it certainly catches the flavor of the source material.
Thank you!
I ran a Zoom songwriting group during the pandie, and for a bit we did generic weeks. One of my friends picked Baroque Pop for one week, and as you can imagine it had Beach Boys Pet Sounds era. I was blown away. Could never have imagined what I heard in a million years. Very inspiring stuff! You guys did great. I did the whole write and produce a song in two days things all during that meetup, and it is difficult, so kudos.
WOW! That was incredible! I love videos about how songs are created...... and then to hear the product at the end of the vid was so cool. The song really has the Beach Boys vibe, with a modern touch. Great job, Josh, Chris, Rhett and the folks helping you capture the magic. Is there a whole album coming?
Way to go! Right on time. Had an earworm the other day, Kokomo. Been listening to The Beach Boys since ‘62 or 3, had to revisit the first three albums, Surfin’ Safari/USA and Surfer Girl plus my all time favorite All summer long. Watch a ton of stuff from Josh’s channel and Rhett’s channel, always entertaining. Loved seeing the collaboration of all of you. You all have amazing talents and the fact that you share that with all of us stellar. 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼
HUGE props to the recording/mixing engineers on this project too! The way these old songs balanced having all these different textures and parts without sounding (too) overwhelming is a massive part of the beach boys/wrecking crew sound, and they nailed it. No easy task.
Vocals so good, I literally got chills remembering Brian. Well done!
Reminds me of one of my favorite Beach Boys songs, “Please Let Me Wonder.” This whole video is amazing!!!
Great video format, I hope to see more of it! Love the sound you made with your new pedals.
I think this is my new favorite "Beach Boys" song! Great job guys!
This is great! As someone who has spent countless hours putting down backing vocals on tracks, watching Chris Cron do all these amazing harmony-parts is amazing! What a talented guy! This was so fun to watch!
Damn! You nailed it! Above all the to tones/sounds/effects you managed to captured the spirit of a Beach Boys song and it made me smile like a kid a Christmas it's so damn good.
This was really cool to see these guys create. Very inspiring. And I agree with others, what a great way to showcase gear.
You guys nailed it ! 50 years ago this would have been a top-10 hit on the radio. This video is an awesome way to demo the gear used as well. You may have started a new trend on how to present new products.
Has any of the remaining Wrecking Crew members seen/heard this? Awesome job! "I got a new strat!" lol!
Great work guys🎉 I love the Song 🤘🏻😜 This video was inspiring 💡
Loved it all, such a god idea to use the pedals for percussion!!!
Great song and sound! I love how you mention Bit O Honey, the absolute best Sweetwater candy.
This was really, really, really good! I enjoyed every minute. The process was fun to watch and the final product is exemplary!
Way to go, team! This was truly fantastic. Love that you all care about keeping the focus on the music!
thank you!!!
Would have been tough not to continually quote the Portlandia skit; noticed Rhett went there about the 58
I saw the Beach Boys documentary a couple days ago, coincidence? yes, absolutely. Your song is great.
Chris Cron totally channeled Carl Wilson on those vocals. Amazing!❤
Pedal flippers are like folks who Bot buy tickets and sneakers
I think not many people wanted these? I also didn't get the impression that these are going to be limited release.
Future runs are entirely possible.
Pedal flippers can be faaaar more annoying. They can badger you relentlessly lowball offers for hours.
You guys totally nailed this. I actually got goosebumps from the vocal performance from Chris. Amazing stuff!
thank you!!
He nails the Beach Boys vibe. He should be touring with a Beach Boys cover band!
I can't handle how awesome this is. So well done on so many levels!
so nuts that you all got to put this out. I lost it at the big dogs joke
Great job guys! How fantastic it is to hear a new 1960s style Beach Boys song written and performed in 2024.
Thanks Pete! There are more where this came from. I’m releasing an album of Beach Boys covers/originals and mashups, including this song “As Long As I’ve Got Music”, on May 24th, under my name, Chris Cron. Hope you like it!
so rad , thanks for sharing! My favorite parts are all the layering, and the use of so many sounds!
Bit O Honey and Sweetwater...perfection
This is totally cool.
Weird thing is that I just finished listening to Pet Sounds, for whatever reason I felt the urge to listen to that album. Then I see this video. Mind is officially blown.
Just purchased my Good Vibrations.
You bought it before you knew what it sounded like?
@@AppaBoy I've been wanting a new vibe pedal, so I took a chance.
I did too. I was buying to flip but.. I love chorus pedals... so... I'm stuck with it
Not to offend anyone's sensibilities, but it will likely go on my pedal board, get stepped on, and scuffed up. Also, I'll likely throw the box in the recycle bin....
@@jimlittle2782understandable
Awesome video! Love the concept! Man this ES-335 look and sound great!!!
So sick! great job guys...I want every one of those pedals and amp! Right now!
Damn. that whole project looks so fun! I’m not a big Beach Boys guy, but I’ve always respected their contribution to modern
Music. So this idea of recreating the tones and feel from their classic Pet Sounds LP, while writing and recording a completely new song, is so darn creative. I’m jealous. Great stuff.
I liked most the reminder to got listen to pet sounds. Amazing track, guys! So fun to watch - sounds great.
Well done, lads. from the new pedals and amp to a great song.
Fantastic! More please.
Seriously, outstanding job. Well done!
Chris hitting a bit of the Al Jardine sound in that opening verse, and then the Carl ad libs at the end. What a vocalist.
Well thank you!!
Please do more of this. I loved all of this.
Very impressive fellas you nailed it! 🔥
Awesome sounds, great arrangement.
Great job !I enjoy this so much !!
Amazing composition, amazing result. Cool 60's vibes. 🏄☮
A nice reminder that music requires talent…bravo Chris. I would have enjoyed this as much with vocals and piano only to be honest! 😅
Thank you Jeremy!
That was fantastic.... great job....
This definitely sounds like something that could've been on Pet Sounds or Smiley Smile/Wild Honey, loved it and all the pedals sounded so good, that 12-string sim was fucking gorgeous
Guys, Congratulations, that`s a wrap-And an absolute blast to watch. The best bit is seeing Josh get almost warm n fuzzy..
Wow! Dude that song was amazing!! Totally nailed the Beach Boys' sound! Loved it! 👍👍👍
First...it was super fun watching you guys put this all together. A creative process like this is always amazing to see. Second....DAMN that song sounds fresh! Excellent job everyone! It truly sounds like something that The Beach Boys wrote & recorded.
Hey thank you! It’s coming out on May 24th under my name. The song (and album) is called “As Long As I’ve Got Music.”
@@ChrisCronMusic Excellent! Looking forward to it. 🤘🤘
As a major beach boys fan and a musician myself, this is absolutely amazing. You guys killed this.
Omg this should be released! This is a damn hit! 2 days??? Are u kidding??? This is as awesome as many of The Beach Boys songs! Have they heard this??? This is total magic. Get it released! Come on JHS guy u have some juice!!!! Great job!
Amazing talent! Chris Cron is about to get a lot more hits to his pages. Thanks for sharing a great session!
Mis más sinceras felicitaciones por el excelente y maravilloso trabajo que habéis realizado. Preciosa canción ❤
That was thoroughly enjoyable. Great job to everyone that worked on this project. 👏
Much appreciated!
So cool.
Great vid
Lovely! Looovelyyy! Thanks guys! Did I mention I love it?
Absolutely amazing guys! Great song! Looks like a lot of fun
So awesome!! The first line “I never left California…” and the way the intro vocals and music just drop to that first line brings us right that California dream and Beach Boys vibe kinda like Please Let Me Wonder 💕
That was really cool...thanks guys!
This is absolutely stunning !! Great job !!!
Please make this into a series! This was actually amazing!!! Very cool content and great to watch 3 people get creative as well as celebrate some great music history :)
If possible, for the love of all that is good please release the final product. Its genuine gold.
make sure to be following chris cron, especially on may 24...
This is awesome! Been listening to the beach boys since i was 3, right after Endless Summer came out. Knew every note and lyric of every track n the album by the age of 4. The first electric guitar I ever saw anywhere, was David Marks' black strat on the back cover cover of the Surfin Safari album.
Great job guys!
You guys nailed it. Very entertaining to watch as well. Chris is getting a little Motown there at the end - can we get a “wall of sound” song next?
Great reminder of the fun creative process in recording. It takes me back to making my favorite recordings, and all the inspirations that led to unique sounds and parts that were not part of the song originally, but the recording wouldn’t be complete without them.
