Yeah I wouldn’t say that was it. England had a lot of quality midfielders then and Gazza was well on the way down at that stage. If I remember rightly he was boozing a lot at the time as well.
No, this is the media's hatred of Hoddle talking. While I think he deserves some criticism for some of his decisions, his decision about Gascoigne was not his fault. The decision was whether to take an unfit Gascoigne in the hope that he might be fit for the later rounds should we get through - and it was a big might be fit. In fairness to Hoddle, he left the decision until the last minute to see how big the possibility would be that Gascoigne might play.
The FA should clone him. A brilliant player. I remember seeing him when he was a teenager playing for Newcastle V Palace. He was just had that great combination of skill and enthusiasm.
Still remember watching his goal against Scotland, Euro 96, when he bamboozled Colin Hendry. By the way -- Hendry was no mug, he was an excellent defender. Gazza, however, was just on a different planet that day....
I watched him play a league cup game for Everton in 2001. At that point he was drinking before the game and was nowhere near the fitness required. He was by an absolute mile the best player on the pitch, just seemed to have so much time on the ball, never panicked, every touch technically superior to everybody else.

The video should probably be titled Paul Gascoigne passing and movement skills :) Good vid though, I like these segments of his play that you chose. In terms of technique, general passing and playmaking he was every bit the equal of other great European attacking midfielders; players like Baggio, Michael Laudrup and Zidane. That brilliant rabona pass (one foot behind the other, at start of vid), the one-twos to pick his way through the opposing midfield- brilliant.
