On one hand, I truly admire how committed many Chinese girls are to themselves in the first place, waiting cautiously for a potential partner to share their lives with, rather than giving in to the traditional path. On the other hand, though, it's sad because this is probably not an easy decision to be taken vis-à-vis the widespread and still persistent disapproval of those who take a more independent and "libertarian" approach to life and relationships.
I'm a +30-year-old 老外 who has recently started a serious (and promising) relationship with a Chinese girl approaching her "leftover title," and there are many hurdles we have to go through due to different cultural backgrounds and current social phenomena. The usual criteria imposed by her parents (namely, a rich and well-established Beijing guy who owns an apartment and a house) frustrate and stress her and, of course, me deeply. We have to first build ourselves financially to hopefully convince them we're good for each other.
This makes sense once marriage is on the table, but what bothers me as a Westerner is the overvalued financial aspect that the man is supposed to have to only then be deemed as a "good guy," a keeper, or a good match. There's so much to unpack from this. I think you guys are doing great, and many of these societal and cultural topics would definitely help people like me understand Chinese society better and also benefit from it.
I truly appreciate this video and this channel's content. You deserve more subscribers.

I appreciate your thoughtful comment. This is exactly why we put so much effort into our videos. In China, people place great importance on financial security in relationships, especially in marriage. This is related to Chinese culture, and your foreigner status may cause them some anxiety. However, there is another Chinese saying: "Sincerity is the ultimate killer move." I hope you can show your sincerity to your girlfriend's Chinese parents as much as possible. This will be very helpful. good luck.

young generations have more choice and they are following their hearts rather than parents

@@sd9987ss They might be follwing their hearts more but are still largely subject to peer pressure from folks of the very same current generation. Many still adhere to the traditional path out of desperation, anxierty, or conformity; so, arguably, many of those who wish to follow their hearts end up giving in.

can you ask about dowry's. i saw some girls asking for 2-5m. Is that normal or was it just propaganda to make china look greedy/entitled.

well, Bride price is still common in many rural areas of China. This is a complex issue with many historical and contemporary factors, and it has led to many interesting social phenomena. I will discuss this further when I talk about the decline in marriage and fertility rates in China. Please subscribe me so you don't miss it. In addition, except for extreme cases, the bride price for ordinary people is generally around 100,000 RMB, and even wealthy families will not be as high as 2 million.
