If Frank Solich had stayed the Coach at Nebraska, how differently would the last 20 years of Husker football have been? CarrikerChronicles.com

Very hard to say. If he had support form the University and the AD I think the situation would not have gotten nearly as bad as it did. I believe we would have been competing at a much higher level, but not if he had the terrible administrations that followed him.

Thanks for sharing this, Adam! It seems to me if things had been handled differently, either by retaining and supporting Coach Solich more, or by implementing changes in a more strategic and transitional way, it would have resulted in a better opportunity to keep the Huskers on track and prevent the rug from being pulled out from underneath the program. That being said, I think if Coach Solich had been allowed to continue, even if a change had occurred later, it would have maintained the stability and momentum of Nebraska football. I'm proud of Coach Solich's induction into the HOF--he's a credit to the University of Nebraska.

I've often wondered that myself, Osbourn didnt have the best first couple of seasons but he 100% turned things around, I do wonder where we'd be if they had never fired Solich, i didn't like the decision, or understand it, to this day i wish we had kept him around, Devaney chose Osbourn, Osbourn chose Solitch, but the Ad was in way to big of a rush, for things to happen the way they should have, he should have been fired not Solich

Great interview Adam. Coach Solich is one of the great coaches at Nebraska. No telling the record. Pretty sure it would still be a dynasty if not for certain powers at the school that wanted to play but had no clue how. Thank you my friend. GBR ☠️☠️☠️☠️

Coach Solich is definitely worthy of being in the HOF. Class act and very grateful of coaches he played for and coached under. To bad such a rouge AD had to but a damper on his career but he (The AD) I don't believe has amounted to much. Congrats oon making the HOF coach.

Frank then Bo make up the entirety of Husker football memories within the big 12. Nothing else comes to mind let alone games worth remembering. The powers that be at the core of this university have sold out everything that made this program what it was. I call it corporatists. Firing Frank who gave his entire life to this state then selling out OU and our lifetime business partners just for money we didn't need. Thanks coach for the memories

What I miss about Coach Solich was his record in the revenge games. Texas was always a thorn in the side, but he did beat them once when it really mattered in the conference title game.

We were playing our best football at the end of the 1999 season. Unfortunately we blew a 27-3 lead at Colorado and they took us to overtime and that’s when Virginia Tech jumped us in the polls. We would have beat Florida St by 13 or 14 points. Dan Alexander’s YAC were unbelievable. The Brown Boyz on D and our LB’s were SHUT DOWN. Florida State was not the team of the 90’s. GBR!

If Solich stays at Nebraska we would have been Bowling every year. I don’t think we would have seen the drop off like we did. Always competitive in the top half of the conference.

Coach Solich was my coach in High School. Southeast High School in Lincoln. Was a 10th grader and was noticed by him. So I began practicing with the varsity.players. Was finishing up a week of practice and was hit so hard by a player that I got my back broken. Which ended my football before it began. Solich was cool about all that. I could tell he felt genuinely bad about me getting hurt. I like him to this day very much. I just wish I had not gotten hurt so badly, so soon as a little 10th grade kid.

I started at the U the same year Solich did and we were in a couple of classes together. Could not understand the dismissal of Solich. He made some changes needed and wasn't given time to implement them. I think the new coach is made of the right stuff and can turn things around , am again excited about football at Nebraska. GBR

Nebraska was by far the best team in 1999. They had trouble hanging on to the ball which cost them the game @ Texas in which they completely dominated but lost due to turnovers. They redeemed themselves in the Big12 Championship! They would have beaten Florida State in the National Championship game. I know Phil Steele had said Nebraska was the best team in '99!

Yes, make a correction… my friend, Frank, was a 150 lb fullback in 1960 and was very good at that position until he was senior and broke his leg. But he went through to his graduation. Now his famous coach was Bob DEVANEY, not Dean. Spell this name correctly. Thanks. Ed, the Deaf high school football coach at now defunct Nebraska School for the Deaf in Omaha.

In the first Husker game I ever attended, I saw Frank Solich “the smallest Fullback in America” score on an eighty yard punt return! I firmly believe that if Peterson hadn’t fired him as Nebraska’s coach we’d have never gone into our mediocrity spiral! We haven’t recovered from that mistake!

Solich will never get the years he should have had at Nebraska following 2003, but I wonder if he can take solace in knowing now that it clearly wasn't a case of he just couldn't follow Osborne. For one, Osborne wasn't great in his early years following Devaney, and two, clearly Nebraska had to go through major changes, and doesn't have the advantages they used to have. It's been 20 years since his firing, and not one coach has been as successful as Solich at Nebraska so far.
