I think that this encounter was known as 'The Battle of the April Storm'!

I am so proud to be British when you hear true stories of our British heroes who were so brave and heroic to give their lives for their fellow countrymen or for fighting the enemy without thinking of themselves. Another great reaction my American friend and allie. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🤝🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Not every German was a nazi as we know. They were sailors too with a sense of humanity, respect and honour.

In 1945 Roope’s widow was invited to meet the King who presented her with her husband’s VC. There was then held a service in Westminster Abby to remember Roope. During the service she was supported by the Hipper’s Captain who had become a POW.

Hi Mark, Captain Roope wasn't the only Royal Navy destroyer captain to earn a VC fighting against Admiral Hipper, her sister ship Lutzow and six destroyers. Captain Sherbrooke onbroard HMS Onslow, togrther with the rest of his destroyer flotilla held of the attack on one of the arctic convoys, until the arrival of the cruisers Jamaica and Sheffield. When the Germans withdrew (minus one destroyer) a badly injured Captain Sherbrooke was still commanding a badly damaged Onslow, despite one of his eyes dangling on his cheek!!!

The Norwegian Campaign had many acts of bravery.... When the Battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau caught the Carrier HMS Glorious and her 2 Destroyers the Destroyers Ardent and Acasta turned and attacked the 2 Battleships and got a Torpedo hit on Scharnhorst, killing over 50 men. The destroyers were both sunk.... with only one survivor!!... The Scharnhorst Bridge crew, officers and men came to attention and saluted the sinking Destroyers .... both Gneisenau and Damaged Scharnhorst sank Glorious also but had to return to base for repairs.... sad day !!

I always found the nightmare of the Norwegian Campaign fascinating. It was the first time British faced the Germans in WW2 - badly equipped, the TA Brigades badly trained and as usual total German air superiority and the Panzers. Multiple landings and evacuations to follow. Narvik battles, and HMS Cossack and the Altmark. Still, very little detail written about the whole thing. Also love the story of carrier HMS Glorious who tried to save the handful Hurricane fighters we had sent - but since they were not equipped for carrier landings, no arrestor hooks, they just tied 15 lb sandbags around their tails to help them brake hard enough to stop! Versatile plane the Hurricane. Sadly wasted, since Glorious and the small escort bumped into, and was sunk by, the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau battlegroup.

Hi Mark, even the two German destroyers were far larger and more heavily armed than Glowworm.

To think the Atlantic seabed is littered with British sailors bodies. My RNavy Dad was really reluctant to even talk about it after WW2.

Hats off to you Mark for getting it right, not ‘the HMS Glowworm’, but HMS Glowworm …even when the video got it wrong !!!
As you know (I think) it is said as if the full name was said, so only any idiot would say ‘ the His Majesty’s Ship’ ( or the His Majesty’s Canadian Ship) . It only makes sense if you say ‘ the United States Ship’.
That’s why. Well done, Mark. Great tale of bravery and respect from the enemy.

    It's called 'British sheer bloody-mindedness!'.
    We simply NEVER surrender.
In WWll, both women and old men would have defended our little island with kitchen knives tied to bro handles of needed.
Most Americans don't realise that Hitler was less than 20 miles away from our coast

I think the German navy was the least fanatical of Hitler's military. They seemed to keep a tradition of 'honour' that the army and Air Force lacked......well, most of them I'm told.........sadly, beasts rise to the top in war........anyway, thank you Mark....⛴️...
