After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.

I'm not a fan of Ariana but hearing her say "I love her so much, I'll take such good care of her" was so genuine, it made me smile.
I wasn't onboard with the Ari casting at first but seeing her in just the little bit of footage we've seen, I can't imagine anyone else playing this part. And that "I'll take such good care of her" had my eyes watering.

I wasn't really a fan of hers until she did a photoshoot with some friends of mine who own a small production company in LA, and they had so many positive things to say about her. It wasn't just generic praise, but specific moments and interactions with Ariana that painted a portrait of a sincerely kind person and good collaborator. I still wouldn't say I'm a fan of her genre of music, but as I began to see her less as a celebrity and more as a real person that my friends actually spent time with and said good things about, I grew to really appreciate her talent and respect her work.

For anyone who's nervous, Jon M. Chu directed the criminally underrated "In the Heights" adaptation. "In the Heights" was full of so much joy and life; it was exactly what a movie adaptation of a musical should be. I have supreme confidence that this adaptation of "Wicked" will make everyone happy.
I absolutely agree. I was so skeptical about seeing In The Heights on screen but Chu brought it to life beyond my wildest expectations. It really redefined the standard for film adaptations of stage musicals in my opinion. And based on how much love and care each and every person on this cast and crew is putting into this and sharing, I have no doubt Wicked's two films are going to be among the highest grossing in their respective release years. I also see so much attention to detail in these few short clips we've gotten to see so far and those sorts of details really speak to just how much TLC has gone into these films.
I remember being in musical heaven already before In The Heights when I found out Jon was going to direct Wicked. I’m 31 and both musicals take me back to my teen years.
I LOVE in the heights, such an underrated musical, the film was brilliant.

@@lordgalaxy1684Wicked has been around for over 20 years and the original Wicked book has been released over 29 years! Also the original Wizard of Oz book is full of great female leaders who ruled Oz before the Wizard! It’s okay if you didn’t like it, if you don’t want to see it then don’t see it!

ok you won me over....this was my first boadway show I saw after moving to nyc after my parents kicked me out for being gay. I got be one of the first ones to see this show in 2004. it holds a very special place in my heart.

I saw a video where the creator was like: "can we please have more movies with a bright and vibrant colour palette cause every single series looks really dark and colourless?" That's what this movie is gonna have. Colours and light.
To see Ariana Grande cry for getting a job like was the most humanly satisfying experience ever. Even great Achievers have dreams, and the fact that she feels the weight of the responsibility taking on a character this huge was breathtaking. Both actresses seem so passionate and perfect for the job, can’t wait to see them both perform on the silvery screen.

I had never seen the stage play/musical. But having done some research on the background of this story and the book it is based upon, it makes sense that this will be a two part film. The themes in this go into a very emotional journey and presents multiple questions. I'm guessing that this film will be very faithful to the play and the book, this is based on seeing the trailer. I love the casting choices and the magical air of this film. Looking forward to this

I just can't wait for this!!! Cynthia has just a voice that soars so effortlessly. She is going to be a fantastic Elphaba. Ariana looks so angelic and having to let go of the singer image of Ariana, she is for me perfect for Glinda.
Honestly these ladies were the best choices for these roles, bar none.
So ready for Cynthia Erivo & Ariana Grande to slay with their vocals as Elphaba & as Glinda in Wicked!

@@sabsain2399 Wicked is a very popular (yes I did that on purpose) broadway show since 2003, very, very loosely based on the book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” It tells the story of the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz. It is mainly prequel to Wizard of Oz, but the second act runs alongside the Wizard of Oz, with scenes that could be inserted in between the scenes of the original Wizard of Oz movie.
I literally saw the stage play last Saturday and was blown away, now I can’t wait to see this and looks like they are doing a great job of it! ❤❤❤❤🇦🇺

being able to see how BAD they wanted to get the roles makes me all the more excited to watch the movie. you could really tell that they were passionate to bring these characters to life and i have no doubt that they did everything they could to give us an outstanding portrayal and performance. the bits of the musical parts were a treat as well! it's going to be so full of love and life! i'll definitely be watching this in the cinemas.
Never seen Wicked but Wizard of Oz is one of my all-time favorite movies so I'm excited to finally see Wicked. Looks impressive.

I went to see Wicked alone when it was in LA with Meghan Hilty and Eden Espinoza. I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know anything about the story. I was so moved by this play. The themes of being different and defending your integrity. About friendship and loyalty. The scene where Elphaba flies with the broom for the first time in Defying Gravity was so powerful that I got choked up. I can’t wait for the movies. The casting is so brilliant. Cynthia and Ariana were meant for these roles. ❤
I first saw Wicked with Eden and Megan too. And I’ve been into musical theatre ever since. I was a 14 year old 7th grader and I’m 31 now. I’ve waited 17 years for this moment.

Kristine Chenoweth is like her godmother, who is her mentor & has been training & preparing her for her role as Galinda/Glinda
A lot of ignorant folks here do not know nor understand the tedious process of casting (whether it be for stage, TV, or film).
They just do NOT randomly pull people off the streets for a role. A lot of vetting, auditions, & deliberations happen before someone is FINALLY CAST for a role.
Especially if it’s a musical, they have to LOOK the part, SING & SOUND great, & can ACT & DANCE. No way in Hades, will Stephen Schwartz allow studio executives cast someone who CANNOT SING HIS SONGS!
And…AND have to meet the criteria set by the CREATIVES of the show/film.
So excited for this actually can't wait I've been wanting a live action Wicked movie for so long now

We don’t know these people. We don’t know their lives. Our judgments in regards to romance, betrayal or whatever the f you want to call it is completely unneeded and unwarranted because WE DO NOT KNOW THEM.
So, with that being said, this looks amazing. Ariana clearly values this role more than any other she has ever played and probably more than any music she has ever made. This response is the response of someone that I would trust with a role so important.
So, I am going to see the film and I hope that it is as passionate and beautiful as the responses these ladies had to receiving their roles.

I want people to like it too. Which is why I still think having the whole story in one go would be a bigger impact. I just know my siblings will forget what happened in part 1 if we end up going to watch part 2 a year later. But Im open to it. Since its split, they can go big.
I will never forget what I first saw wicked at Fresno on the high school trip!!!! Wicked is the best musical play. I ever watched now I’m so lucky to see the film version. Can’t wait to see it.
