I was 20 years old when this song came out. Brings back so many memory's. The Police are pure genius with those simple chords they use that just make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I hear this music. I miss this group. Thanx for taking a look at them.

"Roxanne" is a love song for a erm, lady of the night. The piano chord in the beginning is an accident. Sting sat on the piano being tired, not realising the lid was open, hence the laughter. They decided to leave it as it can be heard.
"Walking On The Moon" is one of their trademark songs and second #1 hit in the UK. Please react to that :) It brings together the key elements - deep bass, great melody, reggae influences and Andy Summer's shimmering guitar sound.

You're on a messy road of discovery and some of the internet experts of tiny details feel they need to dunk on those newbies to show everyone how smart they are. You need to react to Sting’s song Fortress Around Your Heart. It’s from his solo debut album The Dream of the Blue Turtles after The Police broke up. The song is beautiful in its metaphors and the Chorus is incredible. He even considers it the best Chorus he ever wrote. The full album is probably one of the most underrated albums for its lack of huge commercial success, but is considered by many to be his best work and one of the best albums in its genre. You can really hear and feel how talented of a writer and singer/performer he truly is.

This is a wonderful, meaningful, memorable song, made even more famous by Eddie Murphy in the movie "48 Hours" with Nick Nolte. But it's a very male song, with a young guy mansplaining to a prostitute how she should give up her independence to rely on a man just because he says he loves her - but isn't exactly offering a ring or any promises. Most prostitutes got into that situation after being betrayed by men. So there's a real male-chauvinistic edge to this song, unintended as it likely was, where yet another guy is trying to take control over her, take away the few choices she has left, because he feels he deserves it. "I loved ya since I've known ya" he says in the lyrics... but apparently not enough to offer her a better choice *before* she turned to prostitution. "Told you once I won't tell you again I won't share you with another boy" is his reasoning, his side, of what he's asking of her. She should just put all her trust in him, let him keep her, like a pet or a possession...
He never promises forever, not even anything full time. In fact, all he seems to be offering is to support her - maybe her one client, but not at the going rate, of course. No mention of marriage, of building a life together, or even any promise never to betray her. He never says he'll be hers, but is clearly asking that she belong to him.
    Pretty gritty stuff, right?
The song is carried by the rawness. That powerful reggae-style beat and the raw, emotional vocals give the song a feeling and emotion that isn't in the words. Which is why a song with pretty poor lyrics has become a modern classic.

There's a famous area in Copenhagen Denmark called the Red Light District. Lot'sa Naughty stuff goes down along that strip. The "Red Light" refers to; if a business of adult only activities(prostitution) was open in that area they have a red light on in their doorway.

Also keep in mind that in the UK Reggae is very popular. British Icons & Legends from Paul McCartney, Linda McCartney (RIP, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ron Wood were big Fans of Reggae Music. Culture Club also were heavily influenced by Reggae with their debut Single Do You Really Want To Hurt Me. Eric Clapton did his Version of I Shot The Sherriff by Bob Marley and UB40 did their version of "Red Red Wine" written by Neil Diamond in a Reggae version that went to Number One. UB40 also did their Version of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" with Chrissie Hynde (Formerly Of The Pretenders) who wrote "I'll Stand By You" which was one of the last Songs that The UK Girl Group Girls Aloud did in concert before breaking up in 2013. Also on The UK Soap Opera EastEnders that debuted in 1985 they have always had Black Actors whose characters are from Jamaica and an "Extra" named Winston who runs a Music Stall.

"Red Light" means "The Red Light District" in many countries where their are areas that prostitution is legal. Hence; "You don't have to put the red light." because "red light" in general sense means stop as the reference is always the traffic light which in this case is the opposite when the man inlove with Roxanne is telling her to turn off the red light. Sting is the lead vocalist for the band Police. He also has a successful single career.

The Police were the biggest band in the world in the early '80's. They broke up at the height of their popularity. Sting (Gordon Sumner) went on to a solo career and appeared in some movies, too.
A three piece band that ruled the world for a little while. They fought like rabid dogs with each other but put out some amazing music while they lasted.
You can pick so many songs. Hard to go wrong with these guys.
PS: Stewart Copeland is one of the most underrated drummers. Rarely ever mentioned in the discussion. Personally I think he's a top ten drummer of all time. Just me?
    Stay safe

The band had had a tough time, they were pretty broke, they didn't have a tour van, only a really tiny car with them and all their equipment. They'd travelled a long way, the gig was cancelled, then the car broke down, all they could afford was a really rundown hotel. Out of this though Sting was inspired to write Roxanne after wandering the Red light area. Originally Sting had more of a Latin rhythm to the song but Stewart Copeland, their drummer, had other ideas. They used a cramped little home studio, used by a Doctor that had it as a hobby, to record the track. Sting, about to do his lead vocal, stumbled backwards and sat on a piano keyboard. You hear the (literally) bum notes, and then Sting's laugh, the band thought it was funny and kept it in the mix. [1:30] The song was a departure from their more punk style material and set them on a successful new path. Well, ...eventually. It wasn't until they released another 3 singles that radio stations in the USA really began to take interest. On first release in the UK the BBC had banned 'Roxanne' once they realised what it was about, and it wasn't until all the first singles got re-released that it finally became a hit the following year.

You picked a couple great Police songs to start with, both favorites of mine. However not all Police songs are about forbidden love, Like a student in love with a teacher or a man in love with a prostitute... You should try the wonderful song "Message in a bottle" by the Police, and if you can get a video with lyrics, probably the best way to watch the video.

Sting wrote this song because he was intrigued by the private lives of these women, what it's like to be a boyfriend watching his girl ply her trade. It was a massive hit. Seriously it played everywhere - you couldn't escape it for a while there. But it's an awesome song, so I never got tired of it. An example of how it saturated that year: Eddie Murphy wore headphones and sang it to himself in a jail cell in _48 Hrs,_ his first movie. (Sting said he knew he'd truly made it when he woke up in a hotel room one day and the window-washer was whistling "Roxanne".)

I lived for a while with a Beautiful Brazilian Girl with the longest legs ever who needed somewhere near her "work" that was safe and as I had some great fun with her, I fitted the bill and iy suited her. I was single with a normal Suburban house 2 miles from where she worked. I used to have a great solo Sauna. Then I would go the Master Bedroom's accompanying Jacuzzi and wait for her and afterwards.......lol I was so excited she was going to live with me but as soon as she arrived she said " I don't mix business with pleasure" and nothing EVER happened in my place. She went on holiday back to Brazil and came back to live with a guy who owned a hotel in Earls Court :)

The Police were an upbeat sort of dark and savage, Synchronicity II is a straight up murder ballad.
Cyrano (Sirano) de Bergerac was a person who lived in the late 1500's in Paris. He was a well known writer and ladies man. Roxanne was the name of the girl he loved in the play.
Steve Martin was in an updated and very sanitized movie version of the play called, "Roxanne".

I'm pretty sure the band name "The Police" was in reference to people trying to Police lyrics in popular songs and the subject material.
