    student grade and pro watercolor pans are all individually wrapped if they're any good. You can purchase individual replacement pans without having to buy an entirely new set - AND if the paint gets beat up or crumbles a little in shipping, it won't contaminate *all your other pans* that way.
    Edit: A few tips, ADC -- Spray the paints with some water before you start painting to activate them.
    Use the white of the paper instead of the chinese white, and lighten colors by adding MORE water rather than white paint. Work from light to dark.
    If you're trying to cover a larger area with a small brush, wet the area of the paper you want to fill with water first, then go back in with paint on the brush while the paper is still wet. It'll eliminate some of that streakiness.
    The Backruns with the cheap paint are unavoidable, BUT you can minimize them by figuring out which pigments in the cheap paint are more 'aggressive' and not placing them too close to sections of other colors that are still damp.

      Just adding on that when I was taking art in school, I was always also told to have two cups of water. One for washing my brush and the other for activating the paints. I admit, I've only seen him testing the watercolors so I dont know if he swaps to two cups of water. I also dont know how true that holds but the logic that my art teacher gave me was having clean water to activate the paint with meant you weren't muddying and contaminating your other colors, a very real concern with pan water colors.

      All true if you want to use them like it should... lol. But I don't think it was his intention. I think he used the wrong paper. It looks like cardboard or something. If you use good watercolor paper, the paint react differently. Now the paint soaked immediately in the paper and I think that's why you got that streakines. I used these cheap paints before and yes you can work with them, but the chalkines.... and once you used the good stuff it's hard to go beg to the cheap material lol

    • @annnoyez
      @annnoyez 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pfunpfrau there is room for a slightly thicker brush. But they have to make a choice. Mine in the command series was thicker. It was a round 6. And I only use it when I go away and take my little sketchbook. But most of the time I take my 48 pan pallet that is stuffed with extra pans everywhere I can... lol and I take my regular brushes. I have a big handbag so I can have it to take a lot with me lol...

    My wife does watercolor, and she has a couple of those sets. And my understanding is that they are individually wrapped so that different sets can come with different colors, but also so that you don't have to buy a whole new set just to get the one color that you've used. That is, The Replacements are packaged exactly the same way as the original

    The Winsor and Newton brush is meant to be a travel size one so you can just take the little palette with you with a piece of paper and do some plein air painting. I agree that it's not the best for large paintings though.

      If you do watercolor in the future, ADC, fresh water is your friend cause the pigments will carry in the brush hair.
      And I'm halfway through so he hasn't said yet, but the paper is definitely a factor.
      Aha! Watercolor paper. (Still even within that, there are VAST differences in paper, but I'm glad it wasn't sketch paper).
      It would be interesting to see you use the same materials, but switch the brushes. 🤔

    The cotman range is a student grade and is what I would recommend anyone wanting to get into watercolours, the consistency is like professional watercolour pans just using more synthetic pigments, please give your kids a set like this as the dollar store ones are so infuriating to use and give watercolour a bad name as well as can make you go off using watercolour.

      I agree with ADC sometimes cheap product can be way better than the expensive stuff and this is why ADC does really interesting concepts on cheap v expensive to give others who are new to certain products better info which isn't a bad thing. But don't get me wrong the saying "what you buy is what you get" is kinda true but not all the time imo.

    • @LindzTheLooneyOfLondon
      @LindzTheLooneyOfLondon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ADCArtAttack whilst I agree your cheap set was good as a paint it wouldn’t give you the ability to do the same things as a professional watercolour. Those are hard to mix, create a consistent colour wash … they also will quickly fade in many cases. That is all fine for throwaway art of day a young child but the reason it’s worth investing is that if you want a good watercolour to practice watercolour with. And by this I want to make it clear that I am talking washes. Layering without staining I would always recommend the cot man set,
      I agree that the brush in that set is tiny but as it’s a sketch set it’s a travel brush used for sketching rather than block filling, most watercolour uses a mix of brushes for different jobs that would be considered a fine liner so wouldn’t have the amount of water retention as you don’t need it. The set you had is designed to go field sketching which is why you have a loop underneath to let you hold it securely as you paint.
      Oh you asked why the individual wrapping it’s because it protects the paint as moisture can make them sticky. A further reason to choose a set like that is environmental as you can replace individual pans or alter that paint palette to your own needs, rather than having to buy another whole set.
      I guess what I am trying to say is that watercolour painting uses a lot of different techniques which the cheap pallets can’t do. (The cheap sets tend to be due based rather than natural pigment so they don’t work the same for example if you want to lift colour or create a wash or layering technique )I think in truth there needs to be a distinction between a water soluble paint and a water colour paint as the two are very different things. The cot man range is probably Google’s most recommended as it is an affordable set to get into watercolour painting especially when a single half pan of paint (which is the size in your set) can cost over £8.
      I am not though disagreeing with your perspective if you just want a water soluble paint it’s fine. It is not however., a great paint for watercolour. Sadly I learnt that the hard way as like you I am not professionally trained and I bought paints that style but sold by the craft stores as watercolours only to become frustrated that I couldn’t follow the techniques used for water colouring
      I hope this explains why I made my comment, as it pains me that I spent so much on products over the years that are sold a bit misleadingly or come to that they were very misleading !
      I love your videos very much thank you for sharing your creativity, experience and mad art skills with us

    • @LindzTheLooneyOfLondon
      @LindzTheLooneyOfLondon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@claudioschumi87 hi the only reason I say this is as I’ve put as a longer reply to adc is that when it comes to watercolours there are a lot of techniques you use that can’t be done with this style of paint.
      These paints are amazing considering pound sets I’ve bought but they are totally different to the style of paint watercolorists use, for example these paints are more likely to use a dye rather than a pigment so it’s not possible to manipulate the paint in the same way.
      I got so frustrated trying to teach myself with similar paints to the cheap set but sold by craft stores at a premium as watercolours which is why i recommended cotman for anyone wanting to get into proper watercolour painting. As a student set they are really cheap when one paint the same size in that set at professional level csn cost up to and sometimes more than £10.
      I think the problem is that people like me see the cheap sets and don’t realise that there’s a huge difference between a water soluble paint and a watercolour paint.
      Which is why like you I love these comparison videos as they let you see the difference x I hope this explains my original comment x

      @@LindzTheLooneyOfLondon very true... my grandkids may use my watercolor paints when they come and they love it. I guides them and try to make the painting they make beautiful. kids should use good materials, but not on their own. My kids did a lot of art, and used my stuff. And I tried to learn them things they didn't learned at school... but when they were painting on their own that cheap watercolor was good enough...
      I use schmincke, senelier and Qor. And I prefer schmincke above all...
      As tip I can say, buy a Corman and if you like watercoloring, everytime a pan is empty replace it with a professional grade paint. At the end you will have a whole set of high quality paint without to invest that money in 1 time.
      And save up money. Ask money for birthdays and Xmas gifts. Or give them a clue what you want... like I want arches paper for my birthday, or a pan or 2 professional paint. Or that kind of brushes. Or ask for a gift card from your local artstore... once people find out you are really happy with it, that you can be excited to receive 2 tiny little pans if paint, they are relieved that you are a person they know what to give as gift... lol.
      I should go to sleep... I am talking to much lol

    Watercolors are my jam!
    The cheap ones might have a bit of tempra in them for the chalky or it's just filler?
    With the Winsor & Newtons, they're individually wrapped so if you run out of one colour, they actually have refills.
    Also if you use the Winsor & Newton pen before painting, it doesn't bleed just so long as you let it settle on the page (much like before using markers).
    You might be the only person in the world who loves that little plastic brush that came with the cheap ones lol!

  • @ayarosen1035
    @ayarosen1035 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    This is why the W&N are individually wrapped: they are sold separately so people can either create their own set or replenish a pan when running low.
    The reason the brush is so tiny is that this set is meant for quick on location paintings, that are usually about postcard size.
    As you said, the cheap set aren't watercolor but a type of gouache or poster paint. In order to create watercolor, you need to use a transparent binder, so the paint doesn't come out opaque, also, the pigment needs to be of a better quality to preserve the translucent effect.

I love how you were able to create a well-defined image with one of those weird plastic paintbrushes on the $1 paint set side, and really love the definition and nuances in color that you were able to get with the W&N side. If I had to pick a favorite, though, I'd have to pick the W&N. The opacity of that white paint is incredible!

    One thing i totally love about your videos, is, that you cut in those clips that is unscribted, so that the video en awesome and funny to watch. Insted of cutting most of the video, you cut it in, i really like that, it gives the viewer depth and personality and gives the give meaning, and in some cases the viewer remembers the video.
    That is why i love to see your videos :-D

    *Whispers!* Let water soak into your paint for a minute or two and it'll go right onto your brush! Then right onto the paper! As Emily Artful says: Light thin layers, build build build!
    I hope you work with watercolors more in the future, once you're used to the steps it's very soothing to use them. PS if you like laying it on thick and matte, try gouache!

    I actually have the little Cotman set. It's brilliant for plein aire work. Frankly, you'll see a bigger jump in quality when you go to tubed watercolour rather than comparing two types of dry pans. One other tip for you or anyone else used to using markers: try watercolour brushpens! You fill these up with water, mix your colour (with a diff brush), and then suck up your colour into the brushpen. Talk about control over custom colours as well as gradients during application! Cheers, MB. ...oh! And use more of a dry brush technique as this will be closer to your markers.

    ADC these are really good! Every watercolourist everywhere cringing cus they are awful..( and hideously chalky ) and yes you don't blend watercolour like that.( Also not convinced they are actually watercolour they look like water activated poster paint cus they are far to opaque) But we love you anyway!! lmao. Cotman is the student range that's why they are 'cheaper' for good watercolours. They are all individually wrapped so you can replace them and customise your palette. Which every watercolourist needs. :) pro Winsor and Newton are literally labeled professional. Cotman will be better less filler. The Cotman are streaky because you are using to much pigment and not enough water.. you are supposed to build up in layers rather than putting down one thick patch...But I'd love a later comparison to pro watercolours to

    I'm pretty sure that they were individually rapped because you can buy them separately. They did their own assortment but if you don't like a colour or you want to change it you can buy it alone, without searching for a different package that contain the colour that you want, plus a lot of colours that you don't need.

    I’m using Windsor & Newton water colors and they’re certainly one of the best out there.
    Here in Germany we actually differ from „water color“ and „aquarell colors“ bc the latter will last longer and not lose color (more UV resistant).

    As Joe Auerbach said, the Winsor paints are easilly replaced by buying a single paint package, rather than the whole set. And you can mix them
    As for the kids paints being like washes: I think it might be because they are easier to clean up from surfaces you don't want them on. Kids don't always stay inside the lines (nor the paper)

    Winsor and newton is worth it.... I still think the Winsor and newton are worth the price, and quality... not only did the look better and more precise after they dried, but also you can buy replacement colors as you run low to keep your pallet or mix and match if you want other colors. As an artist that dabbles in water color quite often I have found Winsor and Newton to just be more vibrant and easy to use option.
    I love the outcome in todays piece, even the contrast with the two watercolors is good. I like the shading and tone variations in the Winsor and Newton side.

  • @LunarKnight22

    A lot of water colors come individually wrapped. One of the reasons is that they can come loose from their little cases and break apart. I’ve had this happen. You can also perhaps not put one in if you don’t need it. I know that the Sikora Koyie watercolor kit does not come individually wrapped, but they are even smaller and not as good quality. But almost every other watercolor kit I personally have purchased comes individually wrapped. if you want ones that are not, you’re spending a good $60 for only if you colors and they tend to come from Japan. But you’re also getting a whole pan instead of a half pan like these are.

    I have both at home, Winsor Newton for me and dollar store paint for the kids.
    If it's anything like mine, WN will be fantastic and $ store will be like tinted chalk. That tiny try of WN will last at least 30X as long as my dollar store garbage.
    edit: your dollar store has far superior paint! It looks like the watercolour school supplies I had as a kid. my stuff has almost no pigment (which is fine for toddlers)

    Here's a tip! Usually when using watercolor, you use more water to brighten the color, instead of mixing it with white, which makes it more pastel. : )
    Mixing with white works too of course, but diluting with water is just the "standard".
    The reason the paint felt very thick was that you definitely put on a thick layer!
    I think you perhaps were trying to get to much color out of the medium, it usually looks less strong : )
    Sry if im being rude, just want to help.
