I must have sang this in front of the mirror into my hairbrush a thousand times. What a great voice, and great production by molly meldrum. I love colleen doing this number to this day. I learnt alot about singing doing this song with her in my mums bedroom, belting it out, over & over again. The single got bruised...so did my voice.
Colleen did well but it was the Molly Meldrum input that made this track the masterpiece it is was. Molly was the creative force behind 'Real Thing' too. The arrangement of music is a hugely important thing.
I was working as a function chef in a kitchen in Frankston Victoria and Miss Hewett was the star of the floor show. I had let it be known I had been in love with her for 18 years before she arrived and the kitchen staff set me up to meet her. Have you ever wanted to meet some one famous and then it Happened? Let me tell you reader it can bring you undone. I have no idea what we said to each other but the rest of the staff were laughing as she went through to the stage. Poor woman had me drooling over her for 2 more performances at that venue and each time she asked to see me as she entered the kitchen on her way to the stage and each time I had no idea what was said when each meeting ended. She gave me a signed photo of her which my wife threw away later on. I still don't like her for that. My first time seeing Colleen was her singing The Weight and I conned $1.50 from Mum to buy it a nd wore it out. I have seen her acting in a cop shoe called Homocide her in Australia and she was good at that too. One of my all time favourite people in this world and we have been together now for nearly 50 years.

If I remember correctly, Colleen did the original version of "Wind beneath my wings" and was not happy about the success Bette Midler had with it, There is no doubt that Colleen's is the cleaner and crisper version, but the emotional impact of Bette singing it as CC Bloom took the song to a much higher level. On a side note, Colleen's live version of "Dont cry out loud" is without a doubt the greatest version I have ever heard!!

I hope I didn't seem harsh. I didn't quite explain myself, I have seen Colleen sing this live on a number of occasions and as much as I love the studio version, her live versions simply take your breath away.
I practiced for months as a choirboy at St Pauls with Frank York and others as backing vocalists for Colleen Hewett. Just before the recording the track my 'voice broke' it still brings tears to my eyes when I hear the beauty of this song. For those who don't know about boychoirs watch the movie "boychoir" which summarises a small part of the skills needed to get into the choir and the amount of training required each week. Frank and others will remember having to go to St Pauls Cathedral at least 7 times per week. That's commitment.
I had the great pleasure of hosting Carols by Candlelight in Rockhampton in about 1990 for Channel Nine and Colleen was one of the headline acts. Apart from obviously being a superstar singer with a truly world-class voice, she was an incredibly funny, friendly, ballsy lady - outrageous fun backstage and a very warm and personable performer out front. And like all true greats - she made a magnificent performance look utterly effortless. A legitimate star who made my job so easy and enjoyable.
