A great way to finalize a long hard won battle with the laws of physics. Now to get it up in the air like you initially set out to do when you first started this journey so many years ago. A magnificent job done sir.
I was going to suggest using a blower to cool down the jet as most jet engines move through air or idle to cool down. For 18yrs I operated several J34 Westinghouse engines at Willowbank raceway to dry or blow ash from the track. As the nozzle pointed downward once the engine was running you couldn’t stop so I would shut down and the driver towing me would speed up to allow cold air through the intake.
You probably know Smithy , Brett's a mate of mine , operates an A/B kart , my trusty leafblower has been both starting and cooling my engines for nearly 30 years , too lazy to change to anything better 🙂

Oh good, this isn't another pulse jet video. While the crazy rocket man is awesome because he's an old cat who actually does stuff with them, shows himself zipping around the flats, pulse jets are otherwise a bit boring now in these modern times. Nice idea and engineering, but it appears to be fixed throttle so do you plan to make it variable on the dry engine? It's a single-spool centrifugal compressor I presume with a single stage axial turbine? Do you plan to modulate the reheat and how do you plan to optimise and vary the reheat thrust or will it remain as on/off only? If someone is looking to fit this in an aircraft, what type of aircraft? You'll need an awful lot of heatshielding, reliability testing etc as well as some way of varying the thrust and a lot of fuel for even a short flight.
Its all variable , but when you want A/B , you generally want max thrust , No axial wheel , just a turbo radial inflow , this is a backyard jet engine using turbo bits , even the brass bearings . @@growleym504 Max RPM ~58,000 , bearings are standard brass turbo bearings, this is a backyard engine , nothing fancy /expensive . Yep , SFC is a thermodynamic thing we can't beat without higher pressure ratios and component efficiencies
@@andygough4836 The 9/94 engine was a pretty good try at making a reasonable sized engine using a turbo rotor , in hindsight and the passing of 15 years and the availability now of newer bits it needs revisiting , but Andys last engine was a better outcome ...........................LOL, his new one ..................well , its gunna be fantastic 🙂 much better than this one of mine , thats the sort of progress we like to see in the DIY community , can't wait to see it operating in anger 🙂
Brilliant. I see some very cleaver design ideas used here too. I wonder it it would be possible to get the AB to run on waste oil? There is certainly the heat there to phase change it from a liquid to a gas, igniting it from there should be no problem. Could run the thing all day then with no fuel costs. What is the fuel delivery rate for the AB at max power? Can calculate the thermal output from that.

Hi Andy Lotsa birds where I live , plenty of colourful parrots that screech all the time , yep , eventually everything worked , unfortunately the poor weather conditions reduced thrust a lot , but thats to be expected.
The gauge showing (lbs or kilos)? thrust is so poorly resolved it is impossible to see figures or units apart from the 350 in the middle pen mark... What was max pre and post reheat? Great stuff though.

Wow that's an amazing accomplishment! You seem to have a good intuition on what will work with what. have you got any recommendations on a compressor and turbine wheel/ stator combination that could produce 20/40kg thrust?
It'll depend on what sort of engine you want to build , there lotsa turb wheels and NGVs on Alibaba that would fill your needs , you'll be needing ~ 1.5 lbs/sec of airflow
The thrust camera gets badly affected by the afterburner "energy" , it registered ~290 lbs on this run , very hot day , high humidity and low barometric pressure , worst conditions for a gas turbine so thrust was down , but its capable of 350 lbs
Another thing John is look at using piezoelectric ignition rather than spark plug , i doubt plugs will last long in the hot section. I must see your other videos as to how you built the turbine etc. Obviously its well balanced or that thing would shake like mad.
I've had no problems with the plug previously , it simply got covered in crap and needed cleaning , .........................its powered by a car coil and a set of points mounted on a small 12V motor , I've been using it for nearly 20 years without problems , the plug probably needs to be "adjusted" , but as it hadn't given problems, why fix it , but it probably needs a better plug than just the old second hand one with unknown heritage thats in it . Its extremely well balanced , plus the brass turbo bearing keep rotor dynamics under control , theres a lot of shaking at low P2s due to turbulence within the A/B but that soon disappears as the power is increased . Is there a turbine setup in the exhaust flow to spin the compressor blades, or does this require external power to spin the compressor? I ask this because a jet engine is self sustaining, it doesn't require external power past the startup. It's kinda the hallmark requirement for a jet engine. I've seen numerous videos of people and their home made engines and they've all (That I've seen at least) need continuous power applied to a motor to spin the compressor and all they've really accomplished is to make is a powerful blow torch. While I admire the ingenuity it takes to design and build such a machine it's not really a jet engine. Perhaps maybe an air breathing rocket... lol

Yep , self sustaining , its a gas turbine engine with an afterburner , spins up to 58,000 rpm , 4lbs/sec of air flow , 9lpm of fuel burn

It would be possible , heat it first to thin it down , fuel burn rate of my 2 part petrol 1 part kero brew is 6 lpm to the A/B

Nope , max thrust ~~160 kgs , there are basic aerodynamic and thermodynamics constraints to thrust production
