This well-known ‘71 Hemi Cuda has nearly everything going for it!
Ordering a brand-new 1971 Plymouth Hemi ‘Cuda was an exciting experience, especially if you had the means to check lots of option boxes at the dealer. Well the original purchaser of this car had a lot of lead in his pencil.
This amazing 1971 Plymouth Hemi Cuda was ordered new by a man named Zach Reynolds, the grandson of tobacco tycoon R.J. Reynolds. Zach grew up in an enviable position, with nearly unlimited financial resources, and could have easily carried himself above the common man. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth, as Zach was not just a gearhead with a bank account… he was more hands-on than most of us could ever dream to be.
For example, he didn’t just own a plane, he was a national champion aerobatic pilot many years over. He didn’t just collect guns, he was a national pistol champion. He defused bombs for the U.S. Navy, raced cars and motorcycles all over the world, and operated a HAM Radio station when he wasn’t on the road. In fact, he used his HAM reach to help locate organs and donors for people in need all over the country… no doubt helping land his “Dr. Zach” nickname. He possessed high-intelligence, but could also take his cars and bikes apart, repair or modify them, and put them back together… often times just to show people how the things worked. Zach Reynolds was a unique kind of dude for sure.
So it’s no wonder that he hand-picked this ‘71 Cuda for his collection. It’s powered by the legendary 426 Hemi V8 twisting a torqflite 727 automatic transmission, with the super track pak Dana 60 rear end and firm ride suspension. It looks fast thanks to the optional spoiler package, complete with lower front air dam and the pedestal mount rear spoiler. The red is balanced by the black HEMI billboard stripes on the quarters, and even more so by the vinyl top and black rear window slats. But there are many more add ons that are not quite as obvious.
Inside, you’ll find a rally dash, with the 150 MPH speedo and 8000 RPM tach, oil pressure gauge, clock, and resettable trip meter. That’s all lit up with optional time-delay dash floodlighting and a time-delay ignition key light. Zach enjoyed the ride from the unusual bench-seat interior.
The AM / FM Stereo tape system goes one further with the optional recording function and microphone, allowing you to leave yourself some voice notes, or maybe record your favorite song while you burn up the quarter mile. That hi-fi rig added $347 to the bottom line. Zach added his own feature in the illuminated ash tray… those Winston cigarette buts are believed to be his.
Today, this proud fish shows just over 2100 miles on the odometer, and stands as one of the most original and highest-optioned example of the breed. We’ve been told it still has factory-filled fluids on board.
Cars like these don’t come around very often, much like Mr. Reynolds. His life was unfortunately cut short in 1979 at the age of 41, as he perished as a passenger in a plane crash flown by a young new pilot. With as many cars, trucks, and bikes as he had, it’s no wonder this one only racked up a couple thousand miles on the odometer. Today, the ‘Cuda and it’s story live on in The Brothers Collection.
This ‘Cuda would be one of the most interesting Muscle Cars in the world even if it didn’t have an interesting owner as well. We’re glad you took the time to check it out, what do you think?

Always thought the 'Cuda was the best design to come out of Plymouth, ever. The big hips, the long hood and menacing grill make it a real head-turner, IMO.

And to think, Plymouth was the “cheap” Chrysler brand. To bad government regulations had to rip the balls out of these beautiful cars thus ending their lives all to early.

I lie them loaded with factory options, stripped down for racing and performance, factory original, day two modified, or restored. I don't like them turned into clown cars with ridiculous wheels and tires, hydraulics, or outrageous paint schemes. Most times. What I like is the style and personality of cars from the bygone eras, and programs like this that allow us to still enjoy them, even when we can't afford them. Thanks, guys.

I actually owned a FM3 1971 Cuda back in the early 80s as well as a 1970 FM3 T/A 340 6 Pack Challenger. One point of interest is even though you may have seen FM3 Superbirds they actually never built one at the factory as they were all built in 1969 before FM3 was released. Super interesting story Kevin! IMHO the Torino looking rear window louvers don't cut it with the vinyl top but the rest of the package is exceptional! Glad it got saved as original as it is. Personally never saw a Cuda with louvers but lots of Torinos in '70-71 so why not on a Cuda!

When it comes to regular production cars (not limited runs like 1 out of 50), the Hemi Cuda was king of the hill. Stock vs stock, nothing would outrun it...not an LS6 Chevelle, not a Stage 1 Buick, and certainly nothing from Ford. It represented the pinnacle of the musclecar era.

    • @johnnytyler5685
      @johnnytyler5685 3 ปีที่แล้ว

LMFAO! Your comment is FULL of nonsense my friend. First of all, if you don't consider Hemi Cudas to be "limited runs", then what is a "limited run"? A ZL1 Camaro would have NO PROBLEM with a Hemi Cuda at the strip and they made 69 total 1969 ZL1 Camaros. You'll probably call that a "limited run", yet in 1971 they made just ELEVEN Hemi Cuda convertibles and 108 hardtops. How could ANYONE claim that 119 total cars is NOT a "limited run"? In 1967, GM built 20 L88 Corvettes and then built 80 of them in 1968 and 116 of them in 1969. EVERYONE considers L88 Corvettes to be "limited", yet in 1969 alone they built 116 of them while Plymouth built 119 Hemi Cudas in 1971. By comparison, Chevrolet built a whopping (by comparison) 4,475 total LS6 Chevelles in 1970, although that number includes Chevelle SS hardtops, Chevelle SS convertibles and SS El Caminos.
Second, the Hemi cars where obviously fast, but they were (or ARE today at least) incredibly overrated in real life driving or drag racing situations back in the day. There are COUNTLESS "internet experts" these days who act like Hemi cars were totally unbeatable on the streets or at the strip back in 1970 or 1971 when that couldn't be further from the truth. In many instances, the buyers of Hemi cars did not have the knowledge to keep the twin four barrel carbs tuned well enough to make them "killers" on the street. And I'm not sure what you are smoking, but an LS6 Chevelle would have NO PROBLEM keeping up with and/or out-running a Hemi Cuda.
As a matter of fact, in October of 1969 Car Craft actually tested a 1970 LS6 Chevelle and a 1970 Hemi Cuda against each other at the drag strip. The cars were pretty much identically-equipped...although with that said, the magazine claimed that the Chevelle had 3.55 rear gears and the 1970 LS6 Chevelle was only available with 3.31 or 4.10 gears, so the Chevelle likely had the 3.31 rear end and was therefore actually at a slight disadvantage to the Hemi Cuda, which reportedly had a 3.54 rear end. Both cars had 4-speed manual transmissions.
What did the cars run? The Chevelle reportedly ran a 13.12 @ 107.01 MPH. The Hemi Cuda reportedly ran 13.10 @ 107.12 MPH. In case you can't decipher those numbers, that Car Craft article is claiming that the cars run basically IDENTICAL TIMES in the 1/4.
And as a side note, in November of 1965, Car and Driver ran a 1966 L72 Corvette down the track and ran a 12.80 @ 112 MPH. The car had a 4-speed and 3.36 rear end.

All options is good on one like this. He bought it to preserve, not beat like a tired mule. If you plan to use it for Just Racing, then stripped down. No heater required.
