      But what classical musician worth his weight in salt doesn't memorize his part in relation to others?

      @@kalvinhill5308 (1) 'classical', schonberg?? The adjective is UTTERLY inappropriate, since the 'Nacht' is about as ROMANTIC a piece as one can imagine - in form rhapsodic (which Haydn might almost have been frightened of), and in content teetering on the brink of atonality. (2) Whatever does this 'weight in salt' expression mean? (3) and 'memorise... in relation to others' is very murky, too: if it were so, it's puzzling isn't it that all symphonic musicians continue to read from their score!

    • @kalvinhill5308

      if the sheet music was pulled they could play it. Performance is a complex issue you seem to know little about. Weight in salt? In this sense competent would sum it up. But teach on Maestro. A prodigy no doubt sent here to enlighten us plebs.@@julianwynne8705

    This is No. 1 in my classical music list. The fact that almost 120 years ago one could write such complicated yet naturally flowing harmonies within the properly built emotional structure and form is simply unbelievable. Perfectly performed by the orchestra. Thank you, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

      I’m fortunate to have the orchestral score of this piece. Even looking at the page is terrifying! Considering that this orchestra played it from memory, the very few tiny quibbles I have with the performance fade from the radar. When I follow with the score open in front of me, I’m in awe of Schoenberg. When I just close my eyes and listen, I’m in awe of the composer AND the performers. It’s amazing how a composition this dense and intellectual can speak so clearly to the heart.

    To perform this music well, total dedication is demanded. This presentation has this and the components which make a very fulfilling rendition of possibly the pinnacle piece of late-rommantic music. Many thanks to the Norweigen chamber Orchestra.

    • @ragadolls
      @ragadolls 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh please I'm pretty fond of it myself, but let's try not to get overly carried away with the hyperbole. The pinnacle piece of late romantic music? Really? Verklärte Nacht composed in the same year as Elgar's Enigma Variations, 20 years before that composer's Cello Concerto, 10 years before Das Lied von der Erde, and around about 47 before Strauss's Vier Letzte Lieder. All these pieces have much stronger claims to the title, and that's just to name a few.

    The richest, most moving performance of this work I've ever encountered. Riveting, exquisite. The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra is utterly remarkable--they play from their core as a unified organism (intensity of tenderness of leaning violins 5:25 - 5:31). BOSS viola section especially the solo violist. Every section excellent--every player, they're all soloists--but these lower strings are particularly powerful. Celli at the transition between parts... Basses volcanic (around 9 min), a deep geo-thermal foundation all the time. And bravi the seconds throughout Part Two. Wow. Just WOW.

    A thousand million BRAVOs to all!!!!!
    I am absolutely speechless, after seeing a group of dozens of excellent musicians playing one of the most dense, challenging and beautiful works in the repertoire, all by heart (!!!), without a conductor, with the musicians giving everything they have in a wonderful musicality, with undisguised enjoyment, and all this bathed in lighting capable of transporting us to the imagined scenario from which it sprang. And when was the last time someone managed to write a work so complex and at the same time so capable of moving us to the core? The first time I heard Schönberg's "Transfigured Night", at the age of 16, I was so enraptured that I listened to it 4 times in a row and immediately declared it the most sublime thing I had ever heard. With this video, today, my eyes filled with the tears that were certainly on vacation that day.
