Hello Tim that was really enjoyable. I had heard about the Ravensglass railway from friends who had been before. Seeing your video makes me feel like I want to go and have a look for myself. Good show. ❤
Thank you Stephen - I'm going to be rather lost for the next couple of months with no steam to film. I suppose I could do some local history but the days are so short at this time of year and I'm past the point at which I'm happy driving in the dark - ah, the joys of growing old!
Border television news covered this story as a Halloween item and showed the arrival of the special at Ravenglass,. They interviewing the children as they came off the train and they all enjoyed the spooky entertainment provided on board followed by the fun at the castle. Good to see the other side of the excursion from your prospective making a great day out for all concerned.
I certainly had a good day, albeit a long one - up at 4.30 and bed after midnight - I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for these marathons! Best wishes as ever.
A good day out for you there. I bet the kids enjoyed it too Marvellous the service train came in just as the special leaves LOL Ah well it did not really spoil the view.
The kids were certainly sounding very excited back at the station - though I bet a lot of them slept on the train home! Sadly, that's nearly it now for 2024.
@@schoolshorts I think there are a few charters to York for the Christmas market, so may get to see some of those Apart from that I think it will be next year before I get up to Carlisle again for any steam.
Hi Tim, not sure what happened to my first comment, but one minute it was there, but not the next!? … A slightly different vlog, but yet again, so informative.. Had to laugh about the ‘1 an hour’ train slightly interfering with the filming!! 🤣.. hopefully this post of mine gets to you 🤞🤞
Your original posting has appeared as a response to someone else's comment - it's easily done! I can assure you I didn't laugh when the local train turned up at precisely the wrong moment - good job I didn't express my thoughts out loud. Best wishes.
That was rather careless of myself Tim, i have now deleted the post that was wrongly sent as a ‘reply’. Thank you for your ‘detective work’, it is much appreciated 😊😊
Why go all the way to Millom to effect a crossover? Well, to send the special train northwards from Ravenglass to Drigg's crossover on the "wrong" road and behind at least one protecting signal would be to dangerously compromise the absolute block system. Millom's crossover on the other hand exists within the area of railway ("station limits") that is completely under the signalman's control in both directions.
Photographed this doing the track changeover at millom although i half wish i went out to Ravenglass estuary viaduct to get a shot. Nevertheless pretty interesting stuff
The Romans had another wall, the less-well-known Antonine wall, farther north, roughly along the line which is now Glasgow to Edinburgh. Ravenglass however is to the south of Hadrian's wall so well within the traditional limits of the empire. Spectacular country indeed.
@@heinorustenbeck4333 Ravenglass is a long way south of Hadrian's Wall, which ended at Bowness on Solway. The site of the Roman fort (Glannoventa) is a short walk to the south of the modern village. There are some quite impressive ruins known locally as Walls Castle; but they are actually the remains of the bath house.
Good of West Coast to get involved. Great use of drone . It gives a much better sense of place especially with your commentary.
The Cumbrian coast is a godsend for drone filming - wonderful scenery.

Add it to your "must do" list for 2025 - you won't regret it!
Nice filming Tim, much enjoyed, nice drone shots too, musn't forget the lovely Ravenglass Railway, cheers Steve .

@@schoolshorts Indeed Tim, there is a northern Belle on the 16th Nov to Carlisle, hopefully, cheers Steve .

Another wonderful video, Tim. Thanks for that!
You're very welcome Michael. A leaner period coming up, I'm afraid. Best wishes.

Good filming yet again. An unusual tour down the coast and must pay Ratty a visit one day, probably with a climb to Muncaster Fell. 👍
Pick a good day and you'll have a memorable experience.

Were there many people filming at Millom? I wonder how widely known the planned manoeuvre was.
@schoolshorts No or at least nobody where I was at Moor Road Bridge. I doubt it was too well known in that regard
This is a really spectacular view at the cumbrian coastline, but ... i always thought the Roman Empire ended at the Hadrians wall, as far as i know…

@ thanks a lot ! It was worth mentioning/ asking …
