It’s rare that both teams are so likeable but, in this case, they were. Darwin - Cambridge’s ability to actually work out the answer (e.g., at 4:56 and 12:02) was impressive, although they might have worked out or deduced other answers as well (e.g., “etz chaim” 19:34, _chaim_ being the Hebrew word for “life,” as we know from the toast-and the eponymous song from _Fiddler on the Roof-l’chaim_ [“To life”], and the reference work for which a quarter of a million illustrative examples were submitted 5:38-the _Britannica_ does not take illustrative examples but it’s well-known that the _OED_ has and still does). Then, again, I’ve never even _heard_ of the term _nixtamalization_ 9:25-but probably everyone else has-so I can’t be too judgmental. Congratulations to the winning team and condolences to the team that made the winning team possible-I had hoped we might see that team again but, obviously, only one team can proceed to the final.
Good game! Would have loved to see Edinburgh winning but they just weren,t strong enough...a lot of uncertain dithering. Congrats to Darwin with Whitaker gallantly pushing them through the finishing line..great all round knowledge. Thanks CP!😊
Hello again! And what a great match! Very, very entertaining. The winning team just had a little bit more star power, especially in the person of their captain...who might just be the strongest individual contestant remaining in the competition. The losing team was very good, and I'm sad to see them go. The winning team will either win it all, or be a very tough out for whoever does. My best to both teams, and to each individual.
agreed, winning team which is Darwin Cambridge could be like the last years team lead by Wotton, he had 32 starter for 10's in just 5 matches, so Whitaker could see a similar fate where they win just 1 out of the 3 quarter finals hence couldnt qualify for the semi's, today as well apart from Whitaker there was only one other correct buzzer from his team and that was of Willis, so other then Whitaker the 3 contestant's together having only 1 correct Starter for Ten in 2 matches combined means that this team is literally a one man show. So if in any match Whitaker could only manage lets say 3 Starters then Darwins final score might not even be in 3 figures.
May be I am catching on late, but is it often noticed that the third and final bonus question of a set is always a sitter? I don't think it was so regularly so back in the Paxster days - at least the middle years. It's like UC does it so that even the weaker teams might have some score on board than be tied at nought for nought. Kind of like grade inflation.
Yes. It’s the reason why the “repeat the one name you’ve heard in relation to this topic until it’s correct” strategy is often correct on the third try.
What I really don't like about the Chistmas Specials is that went it ends Ithe first match come quickly but after I need to wait an entire week for the next one 😢
Thanks to CosmicPumpkin, from Allen, Texas. These were *tough* questions. I was pulling for Edinburgh (I think the Oxbridge schools have an unfair advantage).
Darwin was a one man show. Nothing new in that. Lots of teams over the years have standouts. But, what surprises me about Harrison Whitaker is that he is actually from the US and solely in the duration of his PhD studies has soaked up a good bit of UK history and culture. Because, Terre Haute is such a world away - if you've ever been there, you'd know. Says on his linkedin that after his PhD, he's now setting questions officially on UC. From that, Sherlock Holmes style I'd say Darwin went out in the semis at best. UC wouldn't likely hire a winner. Would look too familiar, like a reality show than a prestige show. Some distance would seem he came out of a normal applicant pool. May be Whitaker has just been doing the quiz circuit rounds in his UK time and just heard a lot of these questions. Questions do tend to repeat across shows and even within UC. How many times do we hear Krebs cycle? Or something to do with Klint?
There was a team about six years ago whose captain was a chap named Leo and he was also a solo maestro but no matter how good an individual might be a balanced opposing team might just have the edge.
@@BlueSoulTiger not at all. I miss them. When I first discovered OC online I thought it was a bit extreme, and now it's all part of the experience. It was a very literal comment, not sarcastic.

Today apart from Whitaker there was only one other correct buzzer from his team and that was of Willis, so other then Whitaker the rest of the 3 contestant's from Darwin could only manage 1 correct Starter for Ten in 2 matches combined, this shows that this team is literally a one man show. So if in any match Whitaker could only manage lets say 3 Starters then Darwins final score might not even be in 3 figures.
I follow your logic. If Whitaker answers three starters and the team answer all of the bonuses that leaves them with a score of 85 points. That is hardly a winning total. However he is likely to answer six or more starters.
@jameshogan6142 you made a mistake, it will be 75 not 85. because 3 starters will given you 9 bonus questions in total thats 3 each time and a single bonus question gives you 5 points so 5×9=45 and 30 points for 3 starter for 10's so 45+30=75. and to you answer your next point about him scoring atleast six or seven Questions, well best players of last season were Wotton and Justin Lee and there lowest starter's in a single match were 3 (Wotton) and 2 (Justin Lee), both had 9 starter for 10's in other game, even Jones of Imperial had a best of 9 correct starter of 10's in a match and his lowest was just 1 correct starter for 10. so what i am trying to say is that if in any match questions dont fall for Whitaker then dont be surprised to see a below par performance from him, but i agree that the probability of him scoring more than 5 in a match is higher then him scoring just 3 or 4
The other team members did well in the bonus rounds. It’s probably hard for them to beat him to the buzzer, if he hadn’t been there, they would have quite possibly managed to answer some of the starters he got
@@enricobortolazzo2651 possibly, but he interrupted only 1 or 2 times out of the 11 correct starters in the first round which means more then his speed its actually his breath of knowledge which is great and maybe his teammates arent that good, and from what i noticed i think they were below average in the bonus round, but lets see how they perform in the Quarter Finals

Hard disagree. Whittaker’s strong, but his teammates really had to cover him on several questions in this game.
Finally, I got to watch Mr. Whitaker in action again :D such a beast on the buzzer‼️
He could win the competition almost singlehandedly but if they come up against the like of Bristol it will require more than a one man show.
