Traditional Technique: Natural Resist Dye

Feng was touched by the stories about artisanal craftsmanship of her grandmother's generation and started to explore the traditions, values, and meaning behind them.
We visited various regions in China to find a workshop that continues this traditional Chinese natural resist dye technique - a plant-based starch resist dye mixing soya paste, lime chalk, and a natural indigo dye called ‘Dian Qing Ran’ which is extracted from locally-grown plants, and found a local community that continued this technique.
Selected garments from our Spring Summer 20 and upcoming Spring Summer 21 collection incorporate this traditional technique to continue its tradition, values, and stories in our contemporary context, as well as for the future generations to come.

Would love to get the paste recipe. And do you know the difference between the Japanese resist paste and the soya bean?

I believe you need to steam the Japanese rice bran/rice flour dough for several hours before mixing with water into a thick spreadable batter, whereas the soybean and lime paste is mixed and then spread. The difference seems to be the drying time - rice resist is a few hours, soy paste is several days.

We just did this today. We used 1:1 ratio of lime chalk to soy flour (not roasted soy flour). Add water until it is the consistency you want. We made a paste for the stencil and kept it liquid for those of us painting with a brush directly onto the fabric.
