    Hi, I'm a guitar builder and tech and have owned this guitar (earlier version) for about two plus years. Mine was a bit of a rats nest in the control cavity and the tuners needed changing as they do vibrate when playing. Apart from that this guitar is as good as a lot of the Gibson LP's that I've played. This is a very good guitar to buy and mod/upgrade. You wouldn't be disappointed buying one of these. Matt

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm liking it so far. I need to open up the cavity and see what's it look like on this one. So far so good. No complaints on the tuners on this one so far.

    I have the AFD Paradise. It’s the guitar I gravitate to most. My only comment is that changing pickups makes a huge difference. I put a Seymour Duncan Jazz Neck pickup on it and it transformed the sound - much fuller. I have a JB Bridge p/u to install too, but have yet to find time to do it. With some pickups that suit your taste, this is an even better guitar. If you can pick one up second hand, grab it.

    Vintage Guitars tend to be quite good for the money especially since you can find really cheap mint second hand ones here in Europe. Though it's a shame most of them are in a horrendous fake relic finish...

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah... inexpensive guitars with a fake relic usually look pretty awful.

      @@myguitarcloud5987 yes I still have the guitar, it’s one I’ll keep hold of I think. It’s an original relic’d one from when they first brought out the Peter Green Gary Moore (PGM) I’ve heard that the quality of the Vintage lineup isn’t as good now though.

    yeah glad you got a vintage eventually my friend, I love these guitars and they are way better than Harley Benton, I would even say they beat some of the Gibsons, enjoy this beauty nick, I know you will.

    • @macsjamtracks8495
      @macsjamtracks8495 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "they are way better than Harley Benton"
      I would say that's not really a fact, and just a matter of taste. I've played both the V100 AFD (and a few other Vintage models), and Harley Benton's version the SC-550, and I much preferred the Benton. The build quality, and hardware is very good on both, but I personally just like the feel of the Harley Bentons better, and I think they offer more bang for buck.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would say the devil is in the details. I think the Wilkinson is made of better, snobbier materials. One piece neck, 2 piece center seam body. Not sure on pots and wiring yet but wouldn't be surprised to find full sized stuff in there. What's funny though is all of those things may not make it sound or play better than a 550. I do appreciate them being there though. I may try and get a 550 Lemon Drop and do a comparison.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dig it so far for sure. It's a cool guitar and I really like the finish. I haven't gotten a chance to play it with my normal rig at medium volume yet to get a feel for the tones yet. SOON!

    • @nonrevnosnibormetalbeerrev6251
      @nonrevnosnibormetalbeerrev6251 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I am gonna have to check out the Benton 550 then lol, but honestly my vintage is the best guitar I have played ever,

    • @macsjamtracks8495
      @macsjamtracks8495 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vernon - Don't get me wrong, I thought the V100 was definitely a very nice LP for the money, definitely thought it had a nicer feel to it than for example, an Epiphone in the same price range, but I just love my SC-550. I'm playing it more than my $1000 Ibanez guitars atm.
      Nick - you're probably right. When you get down to the nitty gritty, there's probably some more expensive features in the Vintage, but I very much agree that those don't necessarily mean it plays or sounds better. As I said above, I also own a two $1000 Ibanez's, and a $600 Michael Kelly, which are all fantastic guitars, but I've been playing the 550 more than any of them the past month. Take from that what you will.
      I'm also seriously impressed with the Wilkinson stock pick ups that come with it (I'm assuming the V100 has the same ones?). I had a chance to take them through their paces, through a 100 watt Marshall JCM stack, and they absolutely roared. I'm probably not even going to bother swapping them out for Seymours. I think the only things I'd change are: I'd swap out the cheap plastic nut for a better material, and I'd possibly change the Wilkinson tuners for Grovers.

    WOW, These have been out way before thomann started there hb brand & as you see is what they based some of there models off of. Im definately shocked you got 1 Nick !! I know myself I'd eyed there sg's in the past as they do like a sg standard style guitar for 1/2 the cost !!

      WOW then thats a great deal for sure !!
      Last time I was looking at the Vintage lp's & sg's a few years back, a goldtop version of this was around $600-700 canadian & I could get the sg's from out of town here in canada for around $560 canadian.

      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, and that's what you see the price on eBay today as well. I opened up my search to international sellers and found this one on the cheap cheap. They had another one for $75 more that didn't have the finish crack but man it's less than half a centimeter and just in the clear coat. I had to look for it to even know it was there.

      Makes me wonder if they come from the same factory. Personally I've never owned a Vintage/Wilkinson guitar, but I heard some bad things about the quality and the very fake looking vintage aging - and they cost twice as much as their HB counterparts.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't buy one of their aged ones... inexpensive aged guitars tend to look pretty fake. And it is very similar to the Bentons. I'm impressed with the guitar but I also got it for a steal. So my reaction to it might be different if I'd paid full price (double what I paid)

      Yes, Ive noticed that a few makers are using 3 or even 5 piece necks now, Yamaha on their LL series acoustic have introduced a 5 ply neck, makes it very stable and rock solid platform.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have as well. On one of my recent ones it has a 2 piece heel, three piece main shaft of the neck and then a scarf joint and a 1 piece headstock. so 5 pieces of wood by my count.

    Best copy made since Japanese ibanez.most authentic Gibson neck profile. These were out long before the Harleys were. Jhs is a huge retailer in the UK and had great success with these so thomann from Germany said we can do that. Only the Paradise and jbm model have a real maple cap the others are veneers over mahogany. I bought a used one before the Paradise came out and I won't sell it. The neck feels like every 1960s Gibson,heritage I've ever owned. On stage no one can tell the difference in tone . I did put a gfs roller bridge on it though.

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would definitely believe it. They seem to have a slightly nicer bit of woods and construction. Wouldn't surprise me if this was the premium to the Harley Benton standard. One piece neck, 2 piece body. stuff like that.

    • @BadMotivator66
      @BadMotivator66 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's most likely a veneer. my Vintage SG junior is all veneered. the finishes on Vintages always look a bit plastic-ey and fake to me. I tried one of these AFDs in a local shop and as well as weighing a tonne it had a big cosmetic flaw where the neck meets the upper bout. gooped laquer that hadn't been applied properly. they hadn't even noticed and were charging £500 for it haha. I can't fault the necks and wood construction on these, but i've heard from a number of dealers the QC is shoddy!

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't surprise me... might be the nicest guitar coming out of an overseas factory. Those are the ones they struggle with. It's like the SC550 that I got a while back. Played well, sounded great but the QC and finish was just horrible. I got lucky with this one perhaps. Still haven't played it much through an amp though. That will come soon!

      How do you like that service?!?!?! LOL It is made with higher quality woods and construction than a Benton. One piece neck, 2 piece center seam body. As I was replying to another comment it wouldn't surprise me if there was full size pots in there and perhaps not a box switch. I'll have to open her up and see. I'll make sure I include those details with the fuller play demo.

    • @NickintheStates

      From best I can tell, slightly better woods (one piece neck vs multi in Benton, 2 piece center matched back vs 3 in Benton), slightly better electronics (full sized pots vs mini ones, potentially better caps) adn for me at least a better top. The SC-550 that I had was desperately lacking in quality on the execution of the top. This one is quite pretty. I did like the pickups in the 550 better though. These are super hot and dark sounding.

    Nick, very interesting. Do you know if anyone is selling them in the USA? How about the price range? I watched an interview with Trev Wilkinson last night. He was discussing an Encore S type guitar, the bottom of his line. It was pretty nice. This guitar pretty much says Harley Benton on a small dose of crack. Do you know if all the hardware is Wilkinson? That would make sense. D'Adarrio strings, where are they? Maybe Wilkinson is now selling strings? The fretboard looks exactly like my Harley Benton DC's. Cool. Great job.

      There are a few shops on eBay that have them for about $450 give or take. You rarely see them for any less than that unless you look to the UK and have to have them ship here. By doing that I got this one for a steal... maybe $250 shipped to my door. Couldn't resist! The hardware is indeed all wilkinson. No D'Adarrios though! as if! LOL It definitely feels like an upmarket Benton. That's not an insult in my book!

    I've been stupid enough to buy a Vintage Strat Summer of Love through the web:the Jimi Monterey design is awful in design, finish , and was just not playable at all. Stupid because I saw before a Vintage Telie which was horrible in design and finish to the point I just refused to test it. I spent time to make the strat playable. The only good thing was the Wilkinson pick ups worth a cheap GFS. So Vintage never again , they are twice the Benton price but not better or even worse! Nick, I suspect you receive selected models ? What do you think ?

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In both cases I bought them off the rack. This one was from a shop in the UK. Very nice build and action. Pickups I haven't had a chance to really push yet. It is quite similar to somewhere between my SC450 Plus and the SC550 that I had. The materials (2 piece center seam back, 1 piece neck) are definitely a step up but I'm sure that wouldn't make any difference in the sound.
      I'm not big enough of a channel to get many selected models... I could only wish! I actually buy most of my stuff anonymously and try to get a good enough deal that I can flip it after if I'm not in love with it.

      This does have a slot.. I kind of did a lousy job describing it. It's just a tiny slot on a pin vs a Benton which has the more typical large slot import style.

      What is very much the same is the weight, the finish and the pickups.

      Agreed for sure. Makes the Bentons seem like a steal!

    I had a quick question about the finish on the guitar, Ive been interested in getting one of these but I really like the darker stained finish on it. reverb.com/item/3178980-vintage-guitars-v100afd-paradise-2016-flame-maple?gclid=CjwKEAiAoOvEBRDD25uyu9Lg9ycSJAD0cnByfSlG-WCVj4meqWIIwigpp4J25oju01w20zzAUKo4HhoCJSbw_wcB&pla=1 As can be seen in this one. How come they are different compared to the one in the video? Ive seen a lot of different finishes for it, some darker - some lighter. Is this because its a different model or something?

      No, both brands of JHS, a big UK distro company. Encore's the low-end stuff without Wilkinson hardware and cheaper materials. Vintage is effectively tricked out Encore. Then about there there is Fret King far-east and Fret King UK-made, which up the specs again and has some cool and unusual original designs..

    If you had to choose between this, Epiphone or Tokai?

    • @NickintheStates
      @NickintheStates  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of the three that I typically play, I'll take my Epi LP Custom Pro over this. These pickups are rather dark. Vey well built though. With a pickups swap (or maybe some other adjustment) this could overtake it though. That Chinese Tokai is just a bit too small for me.

  • @Squazzoo68

    That's the same color as my Chibson AFD. I guess cuza the weight, the one piece neck and the differant heel it's NOT a rebranded Benton! Maybe it's worth the extra hundred bucks. Man, did you get that thing at the crack of dawn or did they deliver it to ur work and ya went in after hours last night to get it?...ya did, didntcha?

      I believe these guitar's where out long before thomann came up with doing a house brand. If anything the HB's are probly rebrands of some of the vintage models. :)

    Does your wife play? Because my wife would explode if I was buying dozens of guitars like certain greedy giraffes do!!
    In other words...HOW DARE YOU FLAUNT YOUR GUITAR GOL!!!
    You'll pay for this insolence!!!
    ...actually...no, no you won't pay for anything let alone insolence...how would one actually put a real value on insolence, right?
    I mean insolence is ethereal, anti--sentient yes?
    You just can't put a price on some things.
    BUT PAY YOU SHALL!!! Mwahahahaha!!

      HAHAHAHA Actually she rather dislikes guitar. Her Dad and both her Brothers are players so it turned her off at an early age. She tolerates my obsession because I think she sorta likes me or perhaps realizes it could be a lot worse. I could be into crack! Or wear skinny jeans. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

      I have an irritating, selfish n greedy wife, she luvs the thought of me in into crack!!...sigh
      as for skinny jeans, nothing is as horrific, especially in a sober state on an empty stomach as Lemmy in Daisy Dukes!!
      Hmmmph! ...Hmmmph! ...BEEE HARRFFF!
      PEEE - HUGH - K!
      Have yo seen this nightmare? Watch the Lemmy documentary and be sure to cellophane the entire house before hand, because a damned warehouse full of whiskey barrels will be very much insufficient to hold the contents of your stomach!!
      I'll be nauseated for weeks just referring to the incident!!
      BEEYULCK!!
