What should they have said exactly? Holloway specifically says we are not thugs, fighting is not tough, you let your play talk for you instead of talking before the game. And still got suspended. Xavier says Zip em up in the huddle before every game, but now its a veiled reference to violence. Ppl say much worse than "This is my city" to their opponents during big games. Its a big deal only because a fight broke out.
Good lord... opposing teams talk "smack" all of the time. Xavier and Cinnci aren't the only rivalry in college basketball. Xavier and Cinnci aren't the only teams with players from rough neighborhoods. A challenge of college basketball is maintaining sportsmanship even in light of verbal bashing and taunting. Welcome to the sport, boys. People, including children, look up to these players to represent the sport with dignity. Sticks and stones.....
Sad. Coming from a senior. Disrespected? Playing at the college level is a privilege. You represent more than yourself. You have a team, fans, and young kids looking for role models to think about. Where's the coach to interrupt and say "that's it"?
Everyone loves a good fight, but Xavier is a private university, one of the best in the nation, these guys represent the institution and are an embarrassment to it. Especially considering Tu is on schedule to graduate and can barely put two words together.
Talk begets talk. If you trash a guy before the game and then lose, expect to hear about it. Don't swipe in the guy's face and start a melee because you're embarrassed. Still don't get how Holloway is a thug for talking (which happens in EVERY game) and not letting himself get sucker punched and stomped on. Forget Hempstead, no one from anywhere would idle as ppl throw punches at them and their friends.
I.. I don't understand... I Bust my ass in college.... and have to pay for everything myself... these guys toss a ball around and have a collective IQ of just above 70.. and they get a free ride.... what BS!
i didn't see the game but it looks like the coaches still had the starting lineups in at the end of the game. If that's true I blame the coaches 100% for putting these players in that position. There is a reason why smart coaches clear their benches at the end of blow outs.
I hate how the media handles this kind of thing. @9:16 one of the media asks "Were you surprised...one of them said that they are a bunch of thug gangsters". Thats not at all what the player said. The player said that "we are gangsters on the court (slang for: serious players on the court) and went on to say "not like a bunch of thugs". These are still just kids at the end of the day. All of us that went to high school understand that the nature of high school was clicks and surface crap...
Maybe these two schools, players and COACHES need to take a look at Duke and North Carolina and see what programs that play with pride and class , but still have a deep hate for each other. Maybe then they would learn to appreciate their talent and the opportunities handed to them.
These guys are the best guys to talk. "At the end of the day if somebody put there hands in your face or try to do someting to you Where we from you going to do someting back." :)
It's truly amazing how many people come out of the woodwork to post ignorant and bias comments with little to no evidence other than this video. For many of you, of whom are probably greatly out of touch with the generation Tu and Lyons come from, he was simply stating that X is tough on the court. Granted, the term "gangsta" was a poor choice of words, but his reasoning behind it was spot on. You have to have swagger and have to be hard-nosed. But I'm assuming most of you don't understand that.
...and high school oriented social community (their respective colleges). These guys just came out of a heated situation and weren't going to "bail" on their teammates, as they would have seen it, with that mentality.Look how far both teams are going as a result of sticking together. Even though Cincinnati just got knocked out, they proved they can play and be competitive at this level. Hopefully Xavier can go deeper in the tournament too. Hats off to both teams..poise comes with life experience.
I love how people around the country take shots at Bob Huggins I can promise you he & God rest his soul Skip Prosser wouldn't have tolerated that. Mick somewhat saved himself by blasting everyone involved. Chris Mack wow were you a total embarrassment.
I like the way Coach Mack had his players back. We all have our way of expressing our feelings and just because it didn't come out in a politcally correct manner, folks want to start pot shotting. De-select the Ralph Transvant button and stop being sensitive. Surpass what words Mark and Tu were using and try to understand what they were saying. Don't act like you were never told by your Mom when someone puts their hand your face, bite it off. Basketball is an emotional game.
Most people who commented negatively probably never played sports at a high level and/or didnt listen well to what the players said. He didnt say gangster in the traditional sense but rather he simply used the term to allude to the type of tenacity needed to play the game of basketball
This is more than embarrassing....because its coming from Xavier. People from that area know that Xavier has exuded class no matters what. This one is unprecedented for Xavier. It was don'e on Chris Mack's watch. This never happened under miller, mata, prosser, or guillen.
These guys know what they did was wrong and admitted to that! But they also let it known that these guys wont be taken lightly and will not be walked on! Things got heated and emotions were high and this happens in all sports! But NO TEAMATE if hes a real one will allow one of his teamates/brother/sister/family be fed to the wolves and not try to help! These guys spend more time together on and off the court that they are family, they shed sweat, blood, and tears everyday together!
@smartbrother1985 I re-posted because I misspelled a word and I didn't want everyone getting all over me for it. You know how everyone jumps on someone for making one mistake. haha ;o) We have to keep in mind that these are kids and they shouldn't have done this interview and that's the point i was trying to make. The coach should have said no my kids are not going to interview at this time, give it a day or two.
two seniors should know how to handle these questions better than this. They gave the honest answers that anyone in the same situation would give. But you have to tone down all the tough guy talk when making public statements.
Stop it! These comments make me miserable as a young black man. He doesnt mean guns, he doesn't mean violence when he says his team is a bunch of gangsters, he means his team is tough. He used a wrong choice of words, but clarified his statement. Funny no one wants to see that, but watch the clip again and again and he is not condoning thug life, or violence in anyway. His thoughts, like too many of my counterparts are poorly articulated coupled with the fact that people aren't listening fairly.
honestly if it was not for the "we are ganstas, zip em up line" no one would care. ppl say for more offensive stuff playing call of duty and the world has not ended. funny how espn has played that line a million times but hasn't mentioned the line about how they are tough on the court but then saying fighting has nothing to do with being tough. UC's coach response was amazing, and if he truly believes it than he is a man, but i think its short-sided to judge these kids based on their comments
Coach Mack knows he might not be the Coach anymore, and if he can not control his players, he shouldn't be. If/when he saw Tu Holloway talking to Cincinnati Bearcat players and especially their bench he should have pulled him from the game/court. Tu Holloway, Dez Wells instigated this brawl and should be suspended for the season, same for Yancy Gates and the other Xavier player seen throwing a punch and not connecting.
oh my god... these are the best kids that the coaches chose to talk for not only the team but the school? "we got gangstas in the locker room, not thugs but gangstas..." what the fuck...?
Why would Xavier even allow those to guys to be questioned by the press while emotions were still running pretty hot? I mean no shit they sounded like a couple young punks. Most 20 year olds do after a fight.
Listen to the whole interview . Their theme was they proved their toughness on the court. They specifically said that fighting is not toughness. If Yancy Gates had made those commentsit would have been much worse because he threw the punches. Yancy was remorseful though. Read Paul Daugherty's column he got it right ..
..socially speaking. These guys don't understand (yet) that getting in someones head (like in professional boxing and professional basketball) can sometimes be a strategy. I was sitting 7th row at a playoff game between Dallas and Minnesota (in the KG era of MN) and I was shocked to hear what these guys were saying to each other. No fight broke out..nothing like that. These kids don't have the mindset yet to handle it as part of the game as not being that far removed from high school..
Xavier is a very talented team in my eyes. their maturity level is not the best but everybody deserves second chances. maybe they will possibly learn from this. the comment holloway made was very inapporpiate by saying the locker room is full of gangsters. if half the team heard that i assure you they would argue that comment. both teams displayed an enormous lack of maturity and respect. they not only made fools of them selves but fools of their schools. this is not what sports are about.
I'm not saying that they are men so they don't need sportsmanship, I'm saying they are men and are responsible for their own actions. We can't judge them. They aren't children, they can do as they please and deal with the consequences
I'm gonna be like Tu and Mark. I saw Yancey Gates beat the hell out of the WHOLE Xavier team, how can you say you zipped up someone up? ONE MAN BEAT THE HELL OUT OF XAVIER'S WHOLE TEAM. Yancey, I mean Mr. Gates, knocked out the biggest player with one punch and then beat the hell out of the rest of the team. Look a the video, Mr. Gates had five Xavier players on him and they were afraid to swing because they didn't want to get knocked out like the other 'gangster' Xavier's center.
"This is my town. There is noone like me." Wow, dude shouldn't have just said he was jawing at their bench and not actually repeat what he said. That type of attitude isn't going to get him any leniency.
@TheEntity91 I think I understood it quite well, and so did the rest of America. I also understand that Xavier is more concerned with winning and keeping their ranking then teaching a lesson here. I've been a lifelong Illini fan If they were involved in something like that and the players made comments like that afterwards, I would be embarrassed to admit I was a fan. They suspended a kid for 4 games this year for simply missing a few classes.
I have one word: Hockey. When a bunch of Canadians and Russians go out there and goon it up, people accept and celebrate it. When you see some inner city kids do the same thing, they are a blight on society. Funny, that.
The suspensions that were handed out for these players was not sufficient. Some should be expelled or have their scholarships stripped away from them. And how dare their coach sit here and allow them to speak in this manner and represent themselves, their families and the university with such juvenile and street references. There is clearly no focus on education with these boys because not one of them is able to demonstrate a collegiate level education.
These kids got off with a slap on the wrist! I was really convinced after hearing the Cincinnati coach talk about this mess that these kids would live to regret their actions...Not even close.. They disgraced themselves, their school, the fans, the sport and the term “rivalry”. I hope they are sorry for their actions because they are in fact SORRY (players, coaches, programs, staff and athletic directors) Xavier thinks their good, lets watch them fall in March like they always do...lol
Wow those two are foolish to just be straight up like that. Tu basically just told everyone that he started it all before the fight. Players always talking "issh", that's part of the game, they saying their grown man but it equaled to a brawl. I ain't an Xavier or Cinn. hater but this guys should be a lot more smarter when it comes to media interviews.
So according to Tu - "You don't talk before the game, you talk after the game. You let your play on the court talk for you?" No way lol, the best thing that could happen in sports is let that team smack talk, and get their kicks. Then you stomp them on the scoreboard. No better "in yo face" than that. He's a child.
And then make a pathetic attempt to them not being perfect. THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN APART OF THIS PRESS CONFERENCE PERIOD. 10 game minimum suspension for all.
So this is what our college athletes have come down to now? Pathetic. I'm 15 year old and can conduct myself better in a bball game. These guys need to grow up and be men not "gangsters".
Something's wrong here. Your players think they're thugs, not "gangsters," but still thugs. On top of that, they sound like they're just throwing in words they don't know the meaning of to make themselves sound more professional, while at the same time speaking like they have a 4th grade edcation. Coach, this was more than a disappoinment.
how in the world does admin. let the players speak after the game and why didnt they jump in with last question after it turned into microphone trash talk. Someone from the media should of asked them what is the difference between a thug and a gangsta. where is the coach?why was he not advised of the comments prior to his Q&A?
Gangsters on the basketball court.....dumbest statement they could have ever made. I'm glad they apologized for that quote afterward; it was damaging to their image and the image of Black athletes everywhere.
I cant get over the phrase "Ya'll make it animosity, you know? We didnt do this." Who in the hell saw other fans/sports writers/ etc on the field throwing fists and acting like my 3yr old when someone hurt his feelings? IMO Both teams should have to suffer serious repercussions from this. Both for fighting and then afterwards acting like this is supposed to be a part of the game. This is unacceptable typical behavior from two very immature "thug" teams.
@NickEagles24 You're absolutely right. I was short sighted in my assessment. There has to be real consequences to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
This is what happens when you have a bunch of ignorant kids that do not have a father or any responsibility in their household. "i felt disrespected". Get over it! I hope you feel disrespected the rest of your life too. Your future bosses, should you have one, will certainly disrespect you. This is why urban youth never grow up and live off the government. That way they don't have a boss or any accountability. Disgusting!
@Dialate4 the de-select button was geared toward the choice of words Tu and Mark used. I guess it was rubbing folks the wrong way when they used the words "gangsta" and "street". It's no different when your coach is telling you to go out there and take no prisoners. Don't you think it was the schools fault for letting them talk while their emotions were still running high? IDK....During heated rivalries like this, fights are bound to happen. Just be prepared for the consequences.
College & High School coaches told them they are special & ignored the problems they may have had growing up. Bob Knight OMG can you imagine if his IU kids ever did that???
I take it they slept through Ethics class. Instead of running through the line of cheerleaders at the opening of the next game you better have them run through metal detectors.
This two gentlemen handled themselves poorly like the coach said in front of a microphone. And just because it's human nature to fight back or retaliate doesn't make it right. That's what makes us different than animals we have a brain to reason with and to make better judgement. It's a shame that college basketball is starting to look more like NBA in that regard, ethics, and respect should be emphasized just as much as free throws, it's important. We can't let ourselves fall into a pit of jus
fights will always happen in sports! quit bashing these guys because they are black or you think their idots because they dont use the best choice of words in a interview! I bet more than 70% of people who have commented on this have never taken a speech class or every experience being interviewed in front of more than 15 reporters at one time. Its not easy and I would love to witness you do it not only in front of the reporters but on national tv!
people who say that they sound like dumb gangstas or have a ghetto mentality its not that they are speaking the truth its real shit and life and if your mentality isnt like theirs then idk what to say to you.,,,idk because their mentality is to defend themselves and thats human nature so to those ppl who dont agree with what they saying then i wana see how you act in a situation when somebody punch yo ass in the face
@chimneylooker Some of them need to be criminally charged, and expelled from the program. I'm pretty sure a College or a University don't want to be represented in this manor. And the way these guys are talking in the post game conference is immature and stupid of them.
@Illinination1977 Him saying "zip em up, that's our motto" was not reference to violence, but to shut up the other team up bc they were talking trash prior to the game. Please stop liking this guys, it only confuses people. In no way am i condoning their actions, but i am saying that he was not condoning violence. In conclusion, they should keep their scholarship. With all the money they've earned the school, they deserve it.
What do you think if you recruit gangstas...you get gangsta behavior. Colleges know who they are getting when they recruit players. Its all about winning and money. From paying players to fabricating grades most colleges are willing to take the consequences of their actions for the rewards of success and greed. No way I'm I condoning what happen, but if they're cut from a different cloth what more can I say. We are a product of our own environment to some extent.
Noah Greenberg gave enough of a fuck to respond. A few years later the same UC coach decided to choke one of Xavier’s player on the court but they didn’t fire their coach. But sure kick guys off a team that said words while UC actually assaults players
@JonAshbrock English actually doesnt have to be capitalized. Unless you were talking about someone's nationality. he was talking about a language obviously, so you're correction was partly debunked by your own means. Just sayin'
I am a coach of small children and I try to keep this filth away from the kids. No excuses.
I feel for ya coach I've loved sports my entire life & stuff like that fight is 1 of many reasons why I don't coach.
Valerie exactly....8 years later a reply.
Xavier coaching staff & AD shouldn't have let the players go speak with the media.
Exactly
This was great. Need more of this in college sports!!!!!!!!
Talk begets talk. If you trash a guy before the game and then lose, expect to hear about it. Don't swipe in the guy's face and start a melee because you're embarrassed. Pretty sad that not even the coach apologized!
I.. I don't understand... I Bust my ass in college.... and have to pay for everything myself... these guys toss a ball around and have a collective IQ of just above 70.. and they get a free ride.... what BS!

Did this dude really say "we got a whole bunch of gangstas in the locker room. Not thugs but tough guys on the court" !? hahahahaha wow
These guys are the best guys to talk. "At the end of the day if somebody put there hands in your face or try to do someting to you Where we from you going to do someting back." :)
So Holloway practically admits himself that he started the fight...
It's truly amazing how many people come out of the woodwork to post ignorant and bias comments with little to no evidence other than this video. For many of you, of whom are probably greatly out of touch with the generation Tu and Lyons come from, he was simply stating that X is tough on the court. very well said. these guys are well spoken. dont give them a hard time.
The wonderful thing about these positive and negative post, they don't make any REAL difference.
This is more than embarrassing....because its coming from Xavier. People from that area know that Xavier has exuded class no matters what. This one is unprecedented for Xavier. It was don'e on Chris Mack's watch. This never happened under miller, mata, prosser, or guillen.

anyone who has every played a real sport at a high level and experienced what these guys grew up in will understand why this happened
two seniors should know how to handle these questions better than this. They gave the honest answers that anyone in the same situation would give. But you have to tone down all the tough guy talk when making public statements.

Fighting is not a part of basketball, that's why these guys are getting sent home for 6 games and not the penalty box for 6 min
fights happen sometimes, that is life. We should be more concern with hunger than and poverty than a fight that means nothing.
SAD that the media only played ONLY TWO SENTENCES of this whole interview SMH made it seem they was talking "GANGSTA" the whole time
honestly if it was not for the "we are ganstas, zip em up line" no one would care. ppl say for more offensive stuff playing call of duty and the world has not ended. funny how espn has played that line a million times but hasn't mentioned the line about how they are tough on the court but then saying fighting has nothing to do with being tough. people fight, get over it -.-
They need to realize they are representing themselves, their families, their school, the NCAA, and they just spat on all of that
Mack seems to take zero responsibility. When he talks about suspensions, its as if he's going to see what "they" give. HE should be handing them down!
If someone puts there hands in your face, what do you do. Man up and defend yourself.
Why did they let these two answer questions?!?! What was the school thinking and the team thinking?!?
Watch Mick Cronan's opinion, and than watch this it makes you laugh.
Flagged for misleading title. Good job :)
In street slang Zip em up means to put them in body bags and close the zipper, this is a violent phrase
no body is perfect, we all make mistakes in life.
The post-game interview is just as embarrassing than the fight itself. Why in the world would either team allow a post-game interview after that?
this all started on twitter?! Has twitter done anything good ever?
oh my god... these are the best kids that the coaches chose to talk for not only the team but the school? "we got gangstas in the locker room, not thugs but gangstas..." what the fuck...?

If they're signed or drafted by an NBA team...good luck dealing with these guys.

Helpful explanation. No excuse. There's a difference.
Why X let these kids come out and even have a press conference after what happened is beyond me.
Tu Holloway is from Hempstead, NY...If anyone knows about the Stead, they'll understand why he's the way he is lol
Wow those two are foolish to just be straight up like that. Tu basically just told everyone that he started it all before the fight. You let your play on the court do your talking???? Wow Tu sounds so stupid cause he went against everything he said. He was punching like many.
Toughness is when gangstas diss other gangstas on twitter.
Someone from the media should of asked them what is the difference between a thug and a gangsta. where is the coach?why was he not advised of the comments prior to his Q&A?
this is disgusting. they haughty attitude of Holloway is downright awful.
tu should not have said that to the media, its a mentality that he should keep to himslef
There has to be real consequences to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
after this interview, Xavier should be ashamed of themselves.
These guys sound like their coach draws their plays up with cranyons and gives them stickers for making shots ...
Whoever let these guys talk needed to be fired.
How did these guys get into college?
College & High School coaches told them they are special & ignored the problems they may have had growing up. Bob Knight OMG can you imagine if his IU kids ever did that???
stop saying it's where they are from.plenty of people come from the inner city that have a ounce of self respect
I take it they slept through Ethics class. Instead of running through the line of cheerleaders at the opening of the next game you better have them run through metal detectors.
they should be suspended for the year. not just because of the fight but because of a lack of remorse.
Probably two of the dumbest responses I have ever heard in my entire life
people who say that they sound like dumb gangstas or have a ghetto mentality its not that they are speaking the truth its real shit and life and if your mentality isnt like theirs then idk what to say to you.,,,idk because their mentality is to defend themselves and thats human nature so to those ppl who dont agree with what they saying then i wana see how you act in a situation when somebody punch yo ass in the face
i wanna see Yancy Gates reply to Mark Lyons comment about him at 1:20
That makes a lot of sense. Yancy Gates should of not be allowed to attend UC.
@chimneylooker Some of them need to be criminally charged, and expelled from the program. I'm pretty sure a College or a University don't want to be represented in this manor. And the way these guys are talking in the post game conference is immature and stupid of them.
they are not even the slightest bit ashamed of their culture.gangsta's really, just like he said "we good"
Emotional Running High.... no big deal just competitive fire that got outta hand for a minute
They should take away their scholarships not for the fight, instead it should be for that excellent display of grammar...
"We got gangsters in the locker room"
I would kick em off the team
Yet Xavier’s program is better than Cincinnati’s over the last 15 years, try to actually know college basketball
@@ethanbrosnan1164 yet idgaf
Noah Greenberg gave enough of a fuck to respond. A few years later the same UC coach decided to choke one of Xavier’s player on the court but they didn’t fire their coach. But sure kick guys off a team that said words while UC actually assaults players
@JonAshbrock English actually doesnt have to be capitalized. Unless you were talking about someone's nationality. he was talking about a language obviously, so you're correction was partly debunked by your own means. Just sayin'
These guys really put the student in "student-athlete"
