    I'm holding a stovaholics anonymous meeting for our stove addictions! Nice collection. I think my top 3 would have to be the Whisperlite universal, Biolite, and Pocket Rocket 2.

      I live in a high wind region and well the wind can sneak up without notice on an mountain so the MST XKG is a must. Also the maintenance kit is a big bonus.

    I’ve had a Dragonfly for years, and can tell you that that mine has been has been used and abused without fail.
    The legs are still very secure after being bounced around and dropped everywhere.
    I’ve still got a 25?yr old Whisperlite that has never seen any maintenance, either.
    They both work like the day I bought them. I’ve only ever had to lube the pump cup with olive oil now and then.
    Great video. Thanks.

      I have found over 60 years not that i'm too lazy to build a fire to cook over that a good quality mtn stove was the answer , next question was which one is the one that meets my needs ? well over 60 years 7 stoves so far and i'm looking for the magic number 8.. Could be worse, it could be golf clubs ..

    I have virtually all those stoves and a few other totaling 22. Not a bum one in the bunch! Correction on fuel line cleaning, the Simmerlite has a cleaning wire just like the Whisperlite, the Dragonfly wire is not a removable piece instead it uses a replaceable filter in the end of the fitting.

    Wow now that's a nice collection of mtn stoves .. I thought i was bad of owning mtn stoves that go back almost 60 years .. Well done .. My very first mtn stove was the Svea 123 and no. 2 was the Optimus 8R both of which i still have and use them off and on (the good ol' days i guess)
    In the 1980's i bought my first MSR stove, No. 3 Whisperlite and after that others followed .. No. 4 was the XGK which i still use .. No. 5 was the Simmerlite .. No. 6 was the Dragonfly (love that model.). No. 7 was the Snow Peak white gas model (no priming they pretty much figured it out ) The pump has a switch LIGHT or COOK.. Pump up the fuel bottle , attach the fuel line to the stove , move lever to LIGHT and light the burner and when blue flame appears , turn lever to COOK. and add more pumps to the fuel bottle .. .Neat.. Great simmer to it , and very quiet.. Knowing what i know now what is after all these years my number 1 favorite mtn stove ?
    Dragonfly for a variety of reasons .. Just my history on liquid gas mtn stoves .. You did well i like your collection, you have some models i have never seen in the backcountry here .. To this day i still hear where people are afraid of white gas stoves.. ?? ya i don't know why .. just interesting as all..

    Those $15 lixada stoves are hard to beat for occasional three season use. My nova is the original Brunton Optimus version with the quick release fuel line. It’s been on the most trips with me and it’s never let me down. It’s probably my favorite. My runner up is the pre-‘ex’ version of the Primus multifuel. It’s a lot like the xgk.

    Yeeeeeessssssss..... this is what I’m talkin about!
    Yeah you’re right about low octane auto gasoline. Octane doesn’t have anything to do with Stove performance. I think I only own one of the msr stoves. It’s a whisperlite international that I bought purely for collection reasons. My biggest problem with the msr line has been the plastic pumps. It’s definitely the failure point of the system. Good news is that you can now use the Primus pump with the msr universal. Also the new msr pumps are ok. On my list of ‘stoves to get’ I still have a slot open for the old rigid fuel line xgk.

  • @stevejones5391

    Its easy to convert the Whisperlite international to canister gas. no need to change jets- use white gas jet. Parts: 2" of 1/4" black rubber fuel hose-two hose clamps- "Campingmoon Z21-25" canister fuel hose and valve (amazon $20). Remove the male threaded Nindal fitting from the new fuel line with a wrench. insert the remaining nipple into the 1/4" rubber hose and secure with hose clamp. Push the rubber fuel hose onto the stove fuel line and clamp. Can still convert back to white gas

    I hiked the AT in 2000 and used an Xgk and an alcohol stove. The xgk saved my bacon in sub freezing to sub zero south near the end. I really appreciate your summary of the differences. I also would love a bombproof xgk that was multifuel and ran on canisters AND with simmer control. It’s supplant many of their other stoves though. Also just found a whisper light for 5$ at the thrift store now I know it’s a regular one, thanks again. If you hiked in 2000 maybe we passed each other!

    Skeet... When I first opened the video I thought I was watching a part two from the movie Runaway with Tom Selleck. All the stoves look like the runaway spiders from the movie. Cool video.

  • @Thereal111t
    @Thereal111t 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I always thought it would be great if someone came up with a dedicated ‘kerosene only’ pump for the xgk that would have an air bleed valve to allow for precise simmering. That’s how a lot of the older kerosene stoves simmered and it’s pretty effective.

    Hi, I like your stove videos a lot. You strike me as a stove fanatic like myself ;) I've been using the Primus Omnifuel for years, but for the last years I've mostly been using the Whisperlite and XGK. Ever had any near misses? My only close call, was a over pressurized Primus bottle which squirted gasoline from the seal between the flask and pump. This was in the front tent during a cold winter trip. Thankfully all went well.

    Very nice job. Very informative. I appreciate you effort. You are obviously an MSR guy so I was able to get a lot of good MSR info which has always baffled me because I am a Coleman guy. If you ever get an opportunity to test the Coleman Denali vs the MSR XGK I would love to see the comparison of heat output and water-boil times, etc, etc. I am not claiming one would be better than the other but I would be curious to see your results and your impressions of the Denali. (It is all fuel including diesel and jet and inverted cannister so it cxomes out as a liquid. They used that back around 2006. The Fyrestorm and Apollo stoves (TOTALLY different burner design) also use white gas and inverted cannister fuel. The Denali is the only Coleman stove that uses the flame spreader plate. That design is what most MSR stoves use. It always struck me as a primitive design, but it is effective and bomb-proof but noisy and wind sensitive. Its just a geyser of flame shooting up hitting the bottom of the flame diverter plate and spreading upwards around it! I prefer the Coleman burners but MSR is still in the stove business whereas Coleman is not, so that speaks volumes! THANKS AGAIN! GOOD JOB!

    Yep, high octane not only has more additives, but if anything yields a performance decrease as the additives are there to stop it from igniting prematurely under the intense heat and pressure inside an engine. I've heard various numbers thrown around for octane rating on white gas, but it's generally 50-60, yet it provides higher heat output from stoves. I agree that if you don't mind the smell on startup and shutdown, automotive gas runs great.

    Good video. Good collection of stoves. Which one would you say is your favorite and why? I like canister stoves but they get the pressurized with the cold weather in the winter. I would like to see what other company makes a liquid fuel backpacking stove other than MSR. The problem I have with the MSR is that the pot stand is not appropriate for a small pot. This is were canister stoves XL over MSR liquid stoves. Other than that I give my respects to MSR stoves. They are also considerably heavier than canister stoves. And the other hand, this is an area of backpacking where weight should not be the number one criteria to choose a stove. I like the snow peak Bipod stove because of the stability feature. Thank you so much for sharing this video. God bless you.

It isn't as versatile as your favorites but it is a great stove for medium-sized pots, and, althought you could classify it as a car-camping stove, I personally like it and I am quite pleased with its flame control and output.

Not according to the user manual. Orig is white gas only, international is white gas, unleaded, kerosene, universal adds canisters.

    Higher octane fuel contain retardants that will not burn which slows down burning of fuel so it reduces engine knock but leaves deposits over time so detergents are added in the fuel but the larger carbon atoms (larger distillates) form over time from the burning fuel requiring the need to clean fuel line which is why MSR stoves have a reputation for quality and ease of field servicing.

    I've always been confused as to why people say the whisperlite can't simmer. The valve on the pump could be used to adjust the amount of fuel coming out of the bottle, so theoretically, even without depressurizing the bottle, can't you just turn the valve down, let less gas out, and reduce the flame?

    • @jiujitsu2000
      @jiujitsu2000  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can turn the valve down to minimize the amount of fuel to the stove, but it doesn't control it is fine is most people would like.

    • @ThePhatWabbit
      @ThePhatWabbit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you say that there's a noticeable difference in actual cooking performance between using only the gas valve on the whisperlite (no depressurization) versus using the dedicated flame control valve on the polaris?

    I run the Whisperlite Universal because it’s quiteeee.
    I run it with the canister attachment on hose and Canister jet with the Primus ergo pump. It will burn white gas and canister fuel with the UC canister jet. Best of both worlds and quite. The burner stoves are too loud for me.

    • @SpaceExplorer31
      @SpaceExplorer31 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And with the UC jet it burns white gas with no problem.

    Like you and a lot of other people, I have a fairly substantial stove collection. Regarding you collection of stoves, I think you have missed an entire set of stoves that realistically, nearly every modern backpacker looks at and considers. What I'm referring to is the ultralight cannister stoves. I'm not talking about the stoves with the built in pot, I'm talking about the pocket rocket type stoves. Snow peak makes some great ones, and these stoves are incredibly light. They use titanium to reduce weight, and the stoves are extremely durable.
    One thing that I think needs to be stressed here is the need for identifying what you are going to use the stove for, specifically what kind of situations are you going to be in?
    Will you be going on a trip where you are packing everything with you and will be miles away from any kind of stores or conveniences?
    Will you be travelling a lot, never knowing exactly what kind of fuel you will be able to find for your stove?
    Will you be cooking for yourself only, or cooking for others?
    The reality is multi fuel stoves are meaningless if you only brought one kind of fuel, and you are not around "civilization" during your trip. The original whisperlite is one of the most quiet white gas stoves on the market and is easily one of the most durable. They are also one, if not THE, lightest white gas stove out there. The coleman peak line of stoves are great for cooking, but are very heavy.
    The realities of your stove choice really become more focused when you look at how your stove is going to be used for a specific trip. Cannister stoves are easily the best choice for early backpackers. They work every time and are typically very adjustable. The only issue is making sure you have more fuel than you will need for that specific trip and figuring out what you are going to do with the empty cannisters.
    I think you should spend a bit more time stressing the need to understand how your stove is going to be used on a given trip. A lot of choices can be determined by how the stove is going to be used... The most important decision is, are you going to be travelling on planes with your stove? You cannot have fuel on an airplane and will need to buy fuel at your destination. If you are backpacking after driving and will be out for, say 5 days, you will most likely use one single kind of fuel and not need a multifuel stove. If you are new to backpacking, get a cannister stove and use it while you do more research... They're cheap and reliable...
    Again, to me the single most important point should be how are you going to use the stove and then choose which stove fits that need...

    After using the MSR XGK-EX (marine issue) and the Optimus Polaris for a while now I have to say the Polaris is King of the Hill. The MSR fuel bottle design is dated and messy whereas the Polaris is advanced end no mess whatsoever. It runs the same fuels as the XGK without having to switch jets. Plus it packs down easier and has WAY better simmer control, both of which I have QuietCaps for. Also, on a lesser scale, the MSR lube has a tendency to open itself and get all over the toolkit.

      The Polaris is also used by military. The Brittish Royal Marines and Im not sure if the Swedish forces use it since its a Swedish brand but they might do.
      Best regards from Sweden

    I actually feel like the dragonfly pot supports are more robust and stable than any other stove, including the XGK. The vertical supports transfer the weight of large pots directly into the ground without the force going through any joints or connections. With the XGK (and many other stoves) the pot supports act as lever arms and multiply the force, then all that force goes right into a flexible joint.

    The best fuel is easily pure alkylate 4-stroke small engine gasoline. Ton of BTU's with no smell and no poisons... only CO2... Yeah, it's costly but hey... do ya burn 50 litres per year or what!?

    Why even mention discontinued stoves? Most viewing are likely viewing because they are in the market for purchase.
