  • I'm a student blogger at Hope College. I thought a few prospective students would like to see what the typical Dykstra Hall (an all girls dorm on campus) cluster and double room looked like!

Random fun fact: I was in the cluster right below you in 2000-2001. Such a fun place to live. ❤️

I went to Hope in the mid-70s; a lot of hippies were still there and many lived in communes outside of Holland. Hope was a bastion of radical thought and most students looked made in the 60s. That was a time of rugged individualism; now is a time of uniformity. Someone tell me, is the Pine Grove gone or did it recover?

Jazz, I'm very glad to hear the Pine Grove wasn't taken out after the storm. I went to Hope 74/75 when it only cost $2000 a year. A number of us Vietnam Vets went there on the GI bill. Back then Hope marketed itself in the northeast so there were a lot of students from Philly, New York, New Jersey, so the campus culture wasn't Holland culture. Even after I left Hope me and my left wing, long haired friends played music there a lot. There were more older people like me there; it seems the student body now is very conservative (but of the highest caliber of learning still I'm sure). A lot of students were still in the 60s; by about 1978, students were showing up more conservative and didn't care as much about existential questions like us 60s students. There were a lot of Arab students which made it a more educational place. I loved Hope, and really miss it but the neighborhood has changed a lot. I lived at 13th of Columbia across the street from the school, so I blended right in. Back then there was no emphasis on the Christian faith and the 60s students veared away from that, but I kinda wish I had transfered to Western. I think there are a lot more huge buildings around the campus community now; 12th St went all the way through from College to Columbia. Has that neighborhood become a predominately Latino neighborhood now? Downtown was really cool, and I worked at Del's Guitar Gallery and banked at People's bank which is gone. Is the Hitching Post still there? Are you a student at Hope and where are you from Jazz? I'm so old I'm turning into a petrified tree and live in Tucson. i used to love Holland. I couldn't take the winter at my age. Study hard.

Did the mini fridge come in the dorm room or did you have to purchase it yourself?
